Unit Title: How Did One Cell Create You?

(Intended for a high school biology class)

Prelude:
Rational:
By conducting a SmartBoard lesson that includes multiple opportunities for direct, hands-
on experiences, I will create more relevant associations for the content. They will gain content
knowledge that covers mutiple aspects of cell biology. This experience will also allow students to
develop their skills in analytical thinking and decision making. This lesson will connect to the
Illinois State Science Standard HS-LS1-4: use a model to illustrate the role of cellular division
(mitosis) and differentiation in producing and maintaining complex organisms.

Performance Objective
1. After learning about the complexity of cell life and the stages of mitosis, students will be
able to match the descriptions of the phases to the name of the phase. Likewise, given the
name of the phase in question, students should be able to identify the corresponding
description and picture pair. Students will then be introduced to the idea of cell and
organelle differentiation and be able to identify organelles on an animal cell. Students
will be assessed on their ability to recall the stages and descriptions of mitosis, their
understanding of complex vs simple organisms, and their ability to recall the main points
of the lesson via a seven-question Kahoot quiz.

Accommodations for Exceptional Learners

1. A student with cerebral palsy will be given their own pointer to participate in dragging
objects on the SmartBoard.

Materials and Lesson Aids

1. SmartBoard and SmartPen
2. Smart Notebook matching activity
3. PowerPoint
4. Mitosis game: http://www.purposegames.com/game/7f52e586ef
5. Label animal cell: http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/health/anatomy/cell/cell_game.htm

Grouping Strategy
1. Students will be grouped by their tables. The first two tables, a total of 8 students, will be
Group 1. The remaining tables, also 8 students, will be Group 2.
2. These groups will be called up to do activities on the SmartBoard, where members
complete tasks with the help of their peers, if needed.
Enactment
Time Estimate Core Components and Method Makers
3 minutes Introduce Lesson:
How Did One Cell Create You?
Think about it...we all started off as just one
cell that divided enough to make us
The Facts
Estimated that 37.2 trillion cells compose
the human body
Complex vs. simple organism
o Complex has many cells
o Simple may be a single-celled
organism or has only a few
o Humans are definitely complex
How do we get all of these cells?
o Ask for student response
o Mitosis
3 minutes Business Analogy for Mitosis
Explain Mitosis with Visual Reference
Stop and ask if any questions
3 minutes Mitosis Games
Matching on Smart Notebook
o 6 people from Group 1
Website game
o 6 people from Group 2
1 minute Structure and Function
Specialization of cells in multicellular
organisms
This specialization or function is due to the
structure of the cells
Cells are composed of organelles
2 minutes Skip right to the game
Do not have enough time to go into depth on
the cell organelles, but this software is cool
Need the 2 people from each group who did
not get to have a turn
Also need 4 people to come up here and take
turns
Be sure to drag the name and release it when
the line is highlighted
3 minutes Conclusion
We are going to conclude with our
assessment
