Where did the name of the air show come from?
At the time there was a popular movie, starring
Robert Redford, called, “The Great Waldo Pepper”. It
was about a barnstorming pilot. Really brought to
mind the exciting days of early aviation.
He liked the name and decided to call the air
show, The Great Wellsville Air Show.
During one of the air shows, George Lewis, who is

couple of years and then passed it on to Bill Childs.
The first rally was a small group of balloonists
from a variety of backgrounds. They were very
interesting and likeable folks. We had one of
Malcolm Forbes balloons join us along with the
official State of Conn. balloon. A balloon from
Ireland. Yes, George met a balloonist who was
visiting the US and had his balloon with him. He
invited him to come to Wellsville and he agreed. A
really nice guy.

all. The first afterglow took place in the Cochran’s
backyard that evening. Sunday brunch was at the
Wellsville Country Club.

Moneysaver Footnote: Ray Stevens, founder of the
Great Wellsville Balloon Rally, passed away on
January 9, 2010 at his home in DeLand, FL.
Ray was born in Wellsville and moved to DeLand,
FL when he was in the sixth grade. He returned to
Wellsville in 1966 and opened Stevens Men’s and
Ladies Fashions. He also worked at WLSV Radio
Station as the “morning man” from sign-on till 9am.
Ray worked at the clothing store until it closed in
1995 and worked at WLSV off and on for 22 years.
Over the years, Ray was involved in a variety of
clubs in Wellsville, including being a charter member
of the JAYCEES. He enjoyed acting and directing as
part of the group the “Players”.
In 1996, he and his wife and two sons moved back
to DeLand, FL.

gave up heading up the air show and decided to start
the balloon rally.
With George Lewis, who lived near NY City, as
my contact with the ballooning community, I
gathered together a group of locals who were
interested in being a part of the first ballooning

been reduced from two to one.
•Elimination of the limited use junior license and the
requirement that a junior permit be held for at least 6 months
before a junior or senior license may be issued.
•The number of supervised driving hours before scheduling
a road test has been increased from 20 to 50 hours, that
includes 15 hours of driving after sunset.

Hank Gilbert is a home delivered meal volunteer who
delivers meals within the Brookside Community senior
apartments in Olean. Each day at 11:30am the meals are

dropped off at the apartments and Hank delivers them to the
residents. He delivers an average of 250 meals every month.
Hank says, “It’s a privilege for me to do this”. Hank not only GOOD
delivers a meal, but he truly visits with each resident. He
found one resident after she had fallen and broke her hip.

Albany, NY (06/30/2010)(readMedia)-- With New York’s
cigarette tax increasing July 1st, the American Lung
Association in New York is reminding smokers that help to
quit smoking is just a few clicks or a phone call away. The
Lung Association operates a Lung HelpLine and offers a
Freedom From Smoking® online program that can help
smokers succeed in becoming smokefree.
“We urged passage of an increase in the cigarette tax
because when cigarette prices increase, the number of people
who attempt to quit smoking also increases,” said Scott T.
Santarella, President & CEO of the American Lung
Association in New York. “We want New Yorkers who want to
quit to be successful and that’s why we’re reminding them that
there are resources out there to help. Quitting smoking can be
difficult, but it’s not insurmountable. Armed with the proper
tools and with guidance from their physician, smokers can
quit, enjoy the benefits of being smokefree and greatly reduce
their risk of lung disease and other smoking-caused illnesses.”
On July 1st, the cigarette tax in New York state will be
the highest in the nation at $4.35 per pack, up from $2.75.
Because New York City has an additional $1.50 city tax, the
total per pack cost of cigarettes there will be even higher.
Beginning August 1st, cigarillos (little cigars) will also be taxed
at the same rate as cigarettes and taxes on snuff and other
tobacco products will also rise.
“We strongly supported the measures passed by the
Legislature and Governor Paterson because we know it will
result in fewer smokers,” said Santarella. “And fewer smokers

will prompt 120,000 adult smokers to quit and result in 23,000
fewer high school smokers.
What’s more, the provision to force collection of taxes on
cigarettes sold to non-Indians on Native American reservations
which takes effect on September 1 will help keep tobacco prices
uniformly high throughout the state. It is imperative that this
loophole is finally closed.
More than 25,000 New Yorkers die as a result of tobacco
use each year. Another 570,000 New Yorkers suffer from
tobacco-caused illnesses that damage their quality of life.
