TUTORIAL 1 : COORDINATE GEOMETRY

Straight Line

1. Find the coordinates of the point which divides AB in the ratio given in the
following cases:
0 (i) A(5, 8) and B(1, 7) internally in the ratio 2 : 5.
(ii) A(3, 2) and B(4, 2) externally in the ratio 2 : 3.

2. The points A(3, 2), B(6, 4) and C(1, 2) form a triangle. The point P divides AB
internally according to the ratio 1 : 2 while the point Q divides BC internally
according to the ratio 3 : 2. The straight lines CP and AQ meet at the point T.
Determine the coordinates of the point T and find the distance BT.

3. Find the equation of the straight line which


(i) passes through the point (2, 3) and has gradient 2,

(ii) passes through the points A(1, 1) and B(9, 4).


Show that these two straight lines are perpendicular to one another.

4. Find the equation of the following straight line that


(i) passes through the point (0, 4) and is parallel to the line 2 x 3 y 5 ,

(ii) passes through the points (3, 1) and is perpendicular to the line
3x 2 y 6 0 .

5. The coordinates of the vertices A, B and C of a triangle are (2,2), (1, 1) and (1, 5)
respectively. The mid-point of BC is M. Find

(i) the equation of the straight line AM,


(ii) the equation of the straight line that passes through A and is parallel to BC.

6. ABCD is a square and AC is one of its diagonal. Given A(0, 2) and C(6, 5), find
the coordinates of the points B and D.

7. Find the perpendicular distance from the point P(1, 4) to the following lines.

(i) 3x + 4y + 8 = 0
(ii) 5x = 12y + 9

8. Write down the distances from the point P(X, Y) to the straight lines 5x 12y + 3
= 0 and 3x + 4y 6 = 0. By equating these distances, obtain the equations of the
lines bisecting the angles between the two straight lines.

9. Find the acute angle between the following pairs of straight lines.

(iii) 3 x 2 y 0, x 3y 0

10. Find the equations of a pair of straight lines inclined at an angle of 45 0 to the line
2 y x 3 0 and passing through the point (3, 0).

11. Find the equation of the circle with


(i) centre (3, 2) and radius 6 unit,
(ii) centre at the origin and radius 5 unit.

16. Find the equation of the tangents that can be drawn from the origin to the circle
