DANGERS OF DRUNK SEX

Amelia Jacobs* blacked out once while
having sex and cant remember if she was
sexually assaulted.
Three months later, the guy told her they
had sex, but she explicitly remembers tell-
ing herself she wasnt going to because she
was on her period. She says she only want-
ed to kiss him.
I dont like calling him a rapist if that is
perchance what he is, Jacobs said.
Jacobs is now in a relationship and is used
to having crazy drunk sex with her boy-
friend, but she will never forget this one
hazy incident.
While there are many dangers to drunk
sex, including sexually transmitted infec-
tions, unprotected sex and choosing un-
healthy partners, many students continue
to have sex while intoxicated. Seventy-one
percent of UB students have had sex while
drunk, 14 percent have never had drunk sex
and 15 percent have never had sex at all, ac-
cording to The Spectrums annual sex survey.
Forty-three percent of sexual assaults in-
volve alcohol consumption by victims and
69 percent involve alcohol consumption by
the perpetrators, according to Campus Safe-
ty. When intoxicated, a person cannot legal-
ly consent to sex.
UB students have acknowledged the dan-
gers of engaging in drunk sex.
Shayne Watson* goes to parties on a reg-
ular basis and has had drunk sex so many
times he lost track.
Its kind of scary because youre having
[drunk] sex and having fun but at the same
time youre not thinking about the risk fac-
tor as much as you would if you were so-
ber, Watson said.
Watson called his drunk sex clumsy and
unorthodox. He has had a couple of one-
night stands where he remembers waking
up confused and shocked.

Other students feel more comfortable
having drunk sex when they are already in a
relationship or know the person.
Forty-two percent of UB students sur-
veyed are currently in a relationship, 50 per-
cent are not and 8 percent said, its compli-
cated.

Madison Edwards* didnt feel comfort-
able having sex until it was with the right
person.
She hooked up with a guy at a party whom
she wouldnt have had sex with while sober
because he was boring. She made the de-
cision to not have sex with him even though
she was drunk and naked.
When youre entering a situation like
that, its really, really important that you re-
spect your own boundaries because in the
morning if you do something that you re-
gret its not going to be fun, Edwards said.

drunk with her boyfriend. She said being
drunk helped her to be more comfortable,
but she doesnt use protection since she is
on birth control.

She also said injuries during sex increase be-
cause people can be reckless.
A lot of the times and I can attest to this
as a female, were taught so many ways as to
how to prevent violence from happening to
ourselves but were never taught how to not
harm people, Singer said.
Watson had a pregnancy scare after not using
protection. He stopped having sex for months
because he was terried of another scare and
waited until he was mentally ready again.

made too big of a mistake, Watson said. I
was too scared to have sex in that time but
you just have to wait it out and hope for the
best.
Watson has used protection ever since the
scare.
Having sex naturally feels good so hav-
ing sex when youre feeling like that feels
10 times better and you feel like you can go
forever, Watson said.
Feelings during drunk sex
Females may experience a decrease in lu-
brication while intoxicated.
Edwards feels drunk sex isnt as fun as so-
ber sex because your whole body is numb,
not to mention the parts that matter, she
said.
Drinking also made Edwards feel more
comfortable kissing other girls.
How much I hooked up with girls in
high school helped me realized that I am bi-
sexual, Edwards said.
A mans sex drive is affected when drinking.
Watson said it could take him up to a half
hour to have drunk sex and he is not alone.
Many males nd it harder to get it off,

tion. Smoking interferes with blood ow and
makes it harder to get an erection, according
to clinical sexologist Robert Dunlap.

gerous. He says drunk sex makes him more
care-free and easily turned on. He feels his

UB faculty discuss campus sexual assault
University holds panel on
what faculty should know
about sexual assault

If a sexual assault victim comes forward,
the most important thing to do is believe
them, said University Police Deputy Chief
Joshua Sticht at Tuesdays panel.
If they make the decision to disclose
something to you, believe that and dont
ask questions about how much they had to
drink or how they were dressed, Sticht said.

A UB Alert was emailed to students, fac-
ulty and staff on Monday that said a female
was roughed up and assaulted in the area
of Core Road and the MFAC. The email
stated UPD is continuing to investigate the
incident. The university is also on a federal
sexual assault watchlist, along with 200 col-
leges nationwide, for allegedly mishandling
a sexual assault case in May 2016.
Sticht was one of four speakers who pre-
sented on a panel called Campus Sexu-
al Assault: What Faculty Need to Know
in Davis Hall on Tuesday. The speakers dis-
cussed how faculty should handle sexual as-
sault on campus. Approximately 30 faculty
members were in attendance.
Other panelists included: Elizabeth Lidano,
director of the Ofce of Judicial Affairs &
Student Advocacy, Sharon Nolan Weiss, Title
IX Coordinator and Director of the Ofce
of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Anna
Sotelo Peryea, Violence Prevention Coordi-
nator. Teresa Miller, vice provost for Equity
and Inclusion moderated the panel.
Each panelist gave an overview of the re-
sources UB departments provide. Panel-
ists also discussed sexual violence preven-
tion initiatives and gave advice for how fac-
ulty should respond if students disclose that

thinks faculty should be well informed on
how to handle a sexual assault.
The university has a very capable infra-
structure and truly dedicated people ad-
dressing this problem. It is important for
faculty to be fully aware of this infrastruc-
ture and be able to call on it, Nitsche said.
All university employees are encouraged to
provide UPD with information if a student in-
forms them of a sexual assault, Nolan-Weiss
said. Employees may le an anonymous re-
port to maintain the victims condentiality.
The idea of an anonymous report might
not seem very useful, but anonymous reports
have been very useful for us in real world cas-
es in the past, Sticht said.
Sticht encouraged faculty to inform stu-
dents about crisis counseling for victims of
sexual violence. Students can call University
Police, who will connect them with an on-
call counselor. The student only needs to
provide his or her rst name and a callback
phone number for condentiality purposes.
Victims of sexual assault are also entitled to
academic accommodations, according to Title
IX, a federal civil right that prohibits sex-based

What a strange thing to ask your
teenage son. But I vividly remem-
ber my mom asking me something
to that effect in our basement as if
she were asking if I tied off.
This wasnt apropos of noth-
ing, mind you; it was part of some
larger conversation on the virtues
of self-control and sacrice in
marriage or some such stuff.
Of course I masturbated. I was
a teenage boy. And there are only
two types of teenage boys: those
who admit they masturbate, and
dirty, lthy liars. At the time I was
a lthy liar.
It was the only viable option at
the time. Best to lie and move on
instead of making a whole thing
of it.
This is not to slight my mom at
all or paint her in a bad light. She
was and remains the best woman I
know, raising us three kids on her
own. Shes just a religious type and
as a result didnt maintain the most
sex-positive home.
Id say were all well adjusted,
but I am currently writing about
my teenage masturbation habits in
a newspaper.
But is that something I should
feel strange about? This is The Spec-
trums big Sex Issue after all. And
masturbation occurs to me as be-
ing as natural as scratching an itch
or using the bathroom. But thats
not the way its often portrayed.
Its the winking punchline on a
sitcom to put down the lonely guy.
Movies like Kick-Ass use it to il-
lustrate how pathetic the life of its
main character is. It is a lm aimed
primarily at young men probably
the biggest group of masturbators
there is.
And many seem to buy into
this portrayal. I remember hearing
many exchanges like this in middle
school:

off!
And the other person would

done some research.
Ill admit that as a youth I bought
into the bad press. Many ses-
sions ended in Bruce Wayne-on-
his-knees-in-an-alley-type vows of
never again! But that never lasted
for more than a week or two.
There was no need for it. It
would be like telling yourself youre
not going to sneeze anymore or
pass gas. Of course you can hold
it in, but when youre alone and in
the comfort of your own home (or
dorm room, or particularly inviting
bathroom in Lockwood) some re-
lease is all you need.
As I grew older and became
more comfortable with myself, I
got more well, comfortable with
myself.
Any feelings of guilt or shame,
were replaced with the satisfaction
of a job well done.
The purpose of writing this isnt
to convince anyone to pull of their
pants and start tugging/rubbing
one out. Seventy percent of you

To the people in the 30 percent,
maybe youre in possession of
some advanced form of self-con-
trol that we in the 70 percent have
not yet developed.
Maybe its just not your thing.
Thats cool too.
But to you dirty, lthy liars out
there. You silent majority. You pri-
vate pud pullers and phantom bean
ickers. I just want to say: its cool.
Unless youre dropping trou in the
middle of the Student Union, theres
nothing wrong with taking care of a
little business on your own.
Im not saying you have to extoll
the virtues of self-love in publica-
tion form, Im just saying theres
no shame to be had in this partic-
ular game.
And if my mom ever asked me
again:

Im still a man

Lately, Ive been having trouble shaving.
When I was a kid I used to watch a show
called Family Matters (better known as the
Steve Urkel show) every morning when I got
ready for school. One line from that show
has stuck with me every day since I rst
heard it. I cant shave with my eyes closed.
The father on the show was a cop and
he said this to a man who was offering him
a bribe. He elaborated that as a man you
have to look yourself in the mirror every
day when you shave and it gets pretty dif-
cult when you arent proud of what you see.
This quote has inuenced a lot of the big
decisions in my life, I even have a tattoo on
my leg in honor of the quote.
Ive been questioning some of my own
decisions as of late and it makes it hard to
look in the mirror.
Thats because I have something thats
been weighing heavy on me lately. My n-
gers are shaking just typing this.

Im not. I see my male friends as just that,
friends. I dont have any desire to get with
them. When Im chilling with my buddies,
my sexuality is the furthest thing from my
mind. I know some people wont under-
stand that but I just hope my friends do.
This isnt something that was easy to un-
derstand myself so I dont blame anyone
who doesnt get it.
Growing up, I had a fairly generic idea of
what it means to be a man. I got into sports
at a young age. I always wanted to help my
dad with his tools. But I did those things be-
cause I enjoyed them, not because I thought
I had to be a man.
I still do enjoy those things. Im a sports
writer and plan on making a career out of
it. Im not too bad with power tools. I spent
my last birthday on a shing trip with my
dad and brother in law, shing and drinking
beer all day. I dont know how to work on
cars but thats only because my dad doesnt
either. My fashion is boring, I mostly wear
jeans and a t-shirt, maybe a annel. I like
music and hot women.
I thought hot women were part of being
a man too. While I dont necessarily consid-
er that part of manhood anymore, I de-
nitely still enjoy women. When I graduated
high school, I dated a girl I thought I would
marry. I moved into an apartment with her
and envisioned the future. I chose to not tell

When Aliyah Hadid went to a sex toy
store in Canada, she thought lonely, old
women would be there.
She was surprised to nd a crowd of cou-
ples, including a woman buying a rabbit-
shaped vibrator with her boyfriend right be-
side her.
Single women and men looking to explore
their sexuality or couples trying to spice up
their sex lives can use sex toys. Toys come
in a variety of different shapes, sizes and
avors. Some students say sex toys helped
them get to know their bodies. A few stu-
dents have even created their own sex toys
by using fruit, such as bananas, for penetra-
tion.
Forty-six percent of UB students said
theyve used sex toys. Sex toys are predomi-
nantly used by women, according to Veroni-
ca Monet, a certied sexologist and founder
of the Exquisite Partnership Formula. She
said men have used pornography mastur-
bation so excessively that there hasnt been
a big need for companies to create toys for
them.
Abigail Jones sex life changed drastically
once she started using sex toys. She said she
nally got to know where her g-spot was
and her sex life took a turn in the right di-
rection.
I feel like theres this kind of stigma that
sex toys are only for the lonely girl with no
man, she said. No man can make me or-

Eighty percent of women have difcul-
ty reaching an orgasm from vaginal inter-

Monet said sex toys are largely important
for women to discover what turns them on.
If they learn to stimulate their g-spots or a-
spots, they learn places where orgasms can
be accentuated. She often has her clients
who are unable to achieve orgasms pur-

I think sex toys help a woman to explore

deal and I have never had an unpleasant ex-

In light of Trumps recent actions, I went
back a couple weeks ago. I made an appoint-
ment with a nurse to discuss long-term birth
control options.

This is my personal decision. I feel that
this option is right for me, for my body, for
my priorities.
I hope my birth control outlasts Trumps
presidency and perhaps I will choose a dif-
ferent form in a few years.
I felt the need to act because I do not
want to wait until it is too late. For an un-
fortunate number of women, it is already
too late. So here I am, writing this column,
where I will encourage women to act. Go to
your doctor, your gynecologist, to a Planned
Parenthood or another local clinic. Research
your options. Ensure that your own sexual
health and safety is not at risk.

Brian Jones* was browsing Reddits UB
page looking for single girls to talk to. Once
he found a cute girl, he tried to meet up
with her in person.
Jones, a senior economics major, would
try to set up dates in person, but every time
he tried to meet her in person, she canceled
last minute.
It wasnt long before Jones realized he
was being catshed.
Popular forums Reddit and Craigslist of-
fer pages for UB and the greater Buffalo
area to help people meet who are looking
for long-term relationships or a quick one
night stand.
What makes these forums so unusual is
their original purpose the exchange of ser-
vices, goods or information. Craigslist is of-
ten used for buying and selling or job oppor-
tunities, whereas Reddit is a community dis-
cussion forum with a variety of subsections,
from Showerthoughts to Mildly Interest-
ing. Both Reddit and Craigslist primarily of-
fer content that is not related to sex.
I started talking with this girl and it came
up in conversation that we both went to
UB, Jones said. She told me her name and
we had a mutual friend on Facebook, so I
thought she was real.
As the two talked more, red ags start-
ed to make Jones question the legitimacy of
the girl he was talking to.
She would say she was busy every time I
tried to hang with her. Finally, I realized that
the girl I thought I was talking to wasnt ac-
tually the right person, Jones said. A close
friend of the girl was using her Facebook
