199 Study Book Of Scales For Bass Guitar

Position Shifting
When you finally reach the combined Complete Fretboard patterns you should devote much of your
practice time to moving through the shapes and weaving lines fluently around the neck. This needs
to be addressed in small steps.

The first step in reaching this goal is the practice of moving up and down a single position from any
of the fretboard shapes. This can be achieved by simply shifting the hand position up or down by one
diatonic note of the scale. This should be applied on each string. As an example, here we are using
an E2 C Major pattern. There are several ways to move up into the E1 C Major pattern as shown:

G string:

2 4 1 2 4 1 3 4 1 1 2 4 2 1 4 2 1 4 2 1 4 2 1
7 9 10 12 10 9
7 9 10 12 10 9
7 8 10 12 10 8
8 10 12 10 8

D string:

2 4 1 2 4 1 1 2 4 1 2 4 2 1 4 2 1 4 2 1 4 2 1
9 10 12 10 9
7 9 10 12 12 10 9
7 8 10 12 10 8
8 10 12 10 8

A string:

2 4 1 2 4 2 1 4 2 4 1 1 2 4 1 2 4 1 2 4 2 1 4 2 1 4 2 1 4 2 1
9 10 12 10 9

7 8 10 8 7 7 8 10 12 12 10 8
8 10 10 8 10 12 10 8

E string:
