System
The patented, state-of-the-art technology found in the
Wildcat Automated Drilling System has now been
migrated to an electronic platform to work seamlessly
within NOV M/D Totcos RigSense Electronic
Drilling Recorder system. The e-Wildcat provides
constant force and feed to generate a higher quality
wellbore and optimize the rate of penetration. While
in auto-drill mode, the system provides smooth and
accurate operation and control of the brake handle
using precise variable frequency drive technology
and multiple drilling parameter monitoring.

The RigSense e-Wildcat feature brings the added

benefit of a time drill mode that allows the driller and
directional team to drill at a specific rate (e.g. feet or
inches per minute). Time drilling is primarily used to
mill an opening into the side of the casing and to
re-enter that hole after a cement plug has been
installed. In the milling operation, time drilling allows
the milling bit to work slowly at cutting away the
side-wall of the casing. Once the hole is cut, a
cement plug is installed to a depth just above the top
of the hole that has been milled-out. Time drilling is
used again to allow time for the cutting teeth of the
drill bit to negotiate the rapid change of direction
when entering the hole milled into the casing. Time
drilling is also used in side-tracking operations for
multi-lateral well bores.

The Wildcat Automated Drilling System (ADS)

innovative technology that delivers extra value

The patented, state-of-the-art technology found in

the Wildcat ADS makes it the right choice for
updating the surface control system of virtually any
drilling rig. Tested in numerous applications and in a
variety of geographic locales and economic
operating areas, Wildcat ADS consistently
outperformed all weight-only devices and manually
operated braking systems.

Wildcat ADS provides smooth, precise operation of

the rig brake handle with unprecedented accuracy
while monitoring multiple drilling parameters.
Properly configured, it can sustain potential
instantaneous drilling rates of up to 500 feet per
hour. (Rig braking system, air supply, and other Service, Training and Maintenance to Assure
factors may determine the actual limits based on the Reliable, High Quality Performance
setup of the system.) Even the most innovative equipment requires proper
installation, training and maintenance to assure
successful operation and customer satisfaction.
With Wildcat ADS, you receive a complete support
package. Our trained professionals will install it for
you, instruct your drillers in its proper operation,
and make service calls as needed to make sure the
system is performing to your expectations.

Safety is a Priority
The design of the differential drawworks gear unit
makes it the safest brake actuator available. In
addition, an internal low pressure shutdown system
allows pressure to be adjusted to fit the application.

A History of Success
Our equipment has been proven on thousands of
wells in all types of applications, from shallow
straight hole drilling to some of the deepest and
most complex directional/horizontal wells in the
world.

The New Method

Wildcat ADS is designed with todays drilling
requirements and technology in mind. New
downhole technology requires precise weight
transfer to maximize and fully exploit the potential of
the operators investment. Proper use of pump
pressure controls (Delta P) has proven to be the
superior method of drilling with mud motors,
significantly enhancing performance and delivering
important cost savings, especially in directional and
horizontal wells. Our system performs these
functions with an efficiency older weight only and
manually operated systems cannot possibly match.

command sequences for downlinking to
Measurement While Drilling rotary steerable and
other downhole tools. Automation of the downlink-

constantly monitor a stopwatch while giving verbal
instructions to the driller. Drop-down software
menus mean that the right instruction for each tool
is always loaded, further reducing human error.
Since the commands are now precise and repeat-

downlinking operations.
The driller selects ON or OFF and monitors downlinking
progress via the indicator lights.

there is nothing left to do but monitor the status.

Efficiency is frequent to your success

Faster downlinking allows the directional driller to
make more course corrections, if necessary, without
regard to rig time. This can improve wellbore
quality with reduced dog-leg severity, resulting in
less drilling torque, less drag while tripping and
reduced drillstring wear.

Controlled Vertical Drift Indicators (CVD)

Setting the Standard
Commonly known as a TOTCO, the
double-recording drift indicator is the most
dependable and practical method of
mechanically determining the deviation from
vertical in a wellbore.

Non-vertical wellbores take a toll on the drill

string in terms of greatly increased stress and
friction. Bits do not cut as efficiently. More
power is needed to rotate and pull out of a
crooked hole. Fishing jobs become more
frequent. Redrilling and mechanical
hole-straightening devices become necessary.

NOV M/D Totcos Drift Indicators can help you

drill a vertical hole. They provide the driller
with extremely accurate information at
frequent intervals, so he can maintain a
controlled, vertical course.

So simple to operate, virtually any member of

the crew can operate the instrument, and he
can read the charts with ease. Everything is
mechanical so no liquid or electrical
equipment is required.

NOV M/D Totco's Decelerator is designed to limit the
impact shocks applied to go-deviled sonde based
instrumentation tools which house sensitive elec-
tronics and sensors. The device utilizes a linear
hydraulic braking mechanism to arrest the terminal
velocity motion of the instrument bearing assembly
in a controlled manner.
A typical decelerator characteristic, when arresting a
70 kg sonde assembly, is displayed in the charts as
shown.
For a 2000 ft/min terminal velocity the impact shock
imparted on the assembly is only 33 g.
The decelerator is available in 1" and 13/8" diameter

Single Line Weight Indicator Installation:

The load sensor is provided with two connections;
one at the top to attach to the floor block, and the
other at the bottom to attach to the christmas tree or
derrick floor, forming a pull at 90. The system is
calibrated to this right angle pull. Accuracy will be
slightly affected if this angle is not true, but the
sensitivity of the system is always maintained.

The gauge reads directly from the load on the line.

The dial can be rotated for tare adjustments by
moving the knurled knob provided at the upper right
hand side of the gauge.

Features:
The Single Line Weight Indicator is used primarily
on wireline service trucks for measuring the amount
of tension on wireline when logging tools,
perforating guns, downhole explosives, or when
survey tools are lowered or pulled out of the hole.
The intricate operations of wireline service trucks
require sensitive instrumentation of this caliber. In
this application, the indicating gauge is normally
installed in the truck, either panel mounted or
mounted separately. This system is also rugged
enough for other standard oilfield service
applications.

The dial indicator reads either in pounds, kilos, or

decanewtons on a single wireline, usually 0.375
inch cable. Normally used on wireline service trucks
on land, this system is also used on skid mounted
wireline units offshore.
