School Council Update from Administration February, 2017

Winter Activity Day

The staff and students thoroughly enjoyed perfect winter conditions for
our recent Winter Activity Day.

Celebrations of Learning
Our Grade 3 students had an opportunity to showcase their work with
over two hundred parents and invited guests last week and our Grade
2 students are looking forward to the same experience this week. Each
grade team will be scheduling a similar opportunity for parents and
other invited guests between March and May.

Parent Survey

In the next few days you will receive a link to the 2016-2017 New
Brighton School Parent Survey. We are interested in collecting your
feedback on a variety of topics related to New Brighton School. Thank
you for completing the survey when the email with the link arrives.

Teachers Convention and Staff Association Convention

Thousands of Calgary teachers (Separate and CBE) will be descending

on the Convention Centre and various other venues next week for the
annual two-day Teachers Convention. Teachers will be engaging in a
variety of Professional Development activities, keynote speakers and
other professional development. Our Staff Association members
(office, library, lunch, Education Assistant staff) will also be attending a
two-day convention over the same period of time.

Math Strategy Parent Input

The following in a message from the Learning Department of the
the CBE to share with parents:

As you may be aware, the CBE is developing a K-12 Mathematics

Strategy to improve clarity and coherence in math teaching and
learning across the district. The insights and experiences of
students, teachers, administrators, and post-secondary educators
have been gathered to inform the development of the strategy,
and we are now in the parent engagement process. Multiple
engagement processes (face-to-face and online) designed to
capture parent/guardian perspectives will take place over the
next couple of months to continue to inform decisions regarding
the CBE K-12 Mathematics Strategy.
Face-to-face opportunity:
There are five upcoming opportunities for parents to engage in
face-to-face discussions about math education. There will be a
short presentation followed by small group table discussions at
these meetings. Registration for these sessions will be capped at
a maximum of 100 participants each, and will be managed
through Eventbrite.

Online survey opportunity:

Parents/guardians are invited to contribute their thoughts online
in a Thought Exchange Survey. The first phase of the survey
(SHARE) will be open from February 22, 2017 March 15, 2017.
A link to the survey will be posted on the corporate CBE website
at cbe.ab.ca/dialogue. Parents can pre-register for the survey at
http://signup.thotex.com/cbe/FZs and they will be sent an email
once the process begins.

Parent engagement questions:

In both the face-to-face and online engagement opportunities,
parents will be invited to answer the following questions:
1. What does it mean to be "good" in math?
2. What support does your child need to be successful in
learning mathematics?
3. What would help you, as a parent/guardian, support your
child as they learn mathematics?

4. Given that Alberta Education determines the mathematics

curriculum, what do you think is important for us to consider as
we develop a CBE K-12 mathematics strategy?

Information about the face-to-face and online opportunities will

also be sent out through School Messenger. The themes gathered
through the engagement process will be shared on the corporate
website once the engagement process is complete.
