CHAPTER 1
PHILIPPINE GEOTHERMAL PRODUCTION COMPANY, INC.

Philippine Geothermal Production Company,

Inc. (Philippine Geothermal) was incorporated on 16 October 2001
and became a Filipino company on 28 November 2012 when
Allfirst Equity Holdings, Inc. (AEHI), an affiliate of SM Investments
Corporation, acquired 60 percent of Philippine Geothermal from
Chevron Geothermal Philippines Holdings, LLC (CGPHL). CGPHL is
a subsidiary of U.S. Company Chevron Corporation that pioneered
in geothermal energy development in the country and is Philippine
Geothermal's predecessor in operating the geothermal facilities
located in Tiwi and Mak-Ban.

Geothermal energy development in the country started in

1971, when Philippine Geothermal Inc. (PGI), then a subsidiary of
Union Oil Company of California and now known as CGPHL,
entered into a Service Contract with the National Power
Corporation. This pioneering venture transformed the
government's 2.5 kW experiment in the steam fields of Albay
province into the first commercial geothermal power project in
Southeast Asia with the discovery in 1972 of Naglagbong-1 well in
Tiwi. Commercial operations in Tiwi began in 1979, ushering the
birth of the Philippines geothermal energy industry.

Starting in 1974, PGI went on to discover and develop the

Mak-Ban geothermal resource in an area that straddles the
provinces of Laguna and Batangas. Commercial operations in Mak-
Ban, which is a shortened version of Mt. Makiling and Mt.
Banahaw, followed in 1979.

Philippine Geothermal is committed to building on the

complementary strengths of its shareholders and to continue its
legacy of providing a clean, stable, reliable, and renewable source
of energy to meet the country's growing power requirements.

Philippine Geothermal's vision is to be the leading geothermal

energy company, recognized not only for its world-class
performance but also for contributing to the improvement in the
lives of the people in the communities where it operates.

WEEKLY PROGRESS REPORTS

WEEK 1

On the first day of our On-The-Job Training Program, we had

our general orientation program where the company discussed
and explained to us about their company profile and organization.
Mrs. Aisa Sabio, HR Supervisor toured and introduced us to the
employees from different departments including: Human
Resource, Engineering, SGS, Security, Safety, Finance and
Chemlab. She also discussed about the timekeeping, medical and
health services, finance, and security orientation. The most
important part of our orientation program was about the Company
Work Rules and Regulations because as part of their company
employees or workers we trainee must comply with the company
work rules and regulations for our own safety. Also, safety must be
observed in every work we do. The PGPC strictly implemented
Safety Work Practices. Since we trainee will be expose to field
works we must observe the different hazards that we may
encounter in the field and in our work. We also practiced the
safety work practices for our safety like wearing prescribed
personal protective equipments, conducting Job Hazard Analysis
and Job Safety Analysis before we proceed to our work. Then the
last part of our orientation program was the department
orientation. Our department supervisors oriented us on what kind
of work they do and trainings we will undergo. Also, we were
introduced to the operation and maintenance personnel who will
accompany us during our training in the company.

Our first week of our training covers the familiarization of

different wellsites, tools and equipments used in operations and
maintenance of the power plant and the different geothermal
facilities. Also, we were familiarized with the operations of the
power plant and the production and process of Steam Gathering
System.

We also observed the field works of the operation and

maintenance personnel like flow test activity of Kap 29 production
well and its operation procedures for the operation personnel field
works and dewatering of sump for downcomer inspection,
installing skillet blind for isolation of two-phase line and surveying
and data gathering of wellhead for the maintenance personnel
field works.

WEEK 2

At week 2 we were already tasked to do the ORDC with the

assistant of the Area Operations Team operators on different
wellsites. It is a daily routine activity of every steam gathering
system operators. The following are the different tasks conducted
by our Team; (1) Conduct job safety and job hazard analysis, this
includes applying lockforce driving technique for the company
service driver, wearing prescribe PPEs when in field, always apply
3-points contact to avoid falling from elevated places, etc. (2) Go
to Aboitiz Power Plant 1(Team 1) & Plant 3(Team2) for conducting
steamline and cooling towers condensate sampling for testing and
examining the condensate chemical contents. (3) Go to Wellsites
for wellsite monitoring like monitoring of the conditions of the
geothermal facilities, monitoring sump level, monitoring of
wellhead pressure, monitoring of pressure vessels pressure and
level, monitoring of isolation valves openings, monitoring
geothermal pumps such as Nag08 Booster Pumps, Garbarino
Pumps and AJAX, monitoring air compressors, air tank, filter and
generator then recording it to the Operators Routine Daily
Checklist (ORDC). (4) Turnover report to the next shift after the
end of shift, especially if there is an unfinished activity that is still
ongoing.

Our mentors taught us about the operations of the geothermal

power plant and the different geothermal facilities and its uses. On
the second week they taught us about the parts and uses of the
wellhead that the PGPC used in operations, the parts and uses of
the two-phase lines and by-pass lines and the different isolation
valve used, parts and uses of atmospheric flash tank and sump
where it is used to discharged two-phase fluids when flowing a
well during operation. They also taught us the procedure in
conducting the flow test activity for a production well in order to
contribute to the system.

In maintenance, our mentors taught us about the types, uses

and maintenance of different control valves and pipelines that are
connected to the separators and scrubbers like the pneumatic
control valves that are powered by air and the motorized control
valves which are powered by electricity. Also, they taught us the
process of gathering data and surveying of a production and
injection wells for the steam production monitoring. They taught
the process of dewatering of a sump for the maintenance and
inspection of downcomer (H-type and F-type).

WEEK 3

Just like at week 2 we were again tasked to do the ORDC with

the assistant of the Area Operations Team operators on different

On
the third week they taught us about the parts and uses of the
production lines, parts and uses of separators that used to
separate two-phase fluids and its different level control valves.

test activity for a production well in order to contribute to the
system.
In maintenance, our mentors taught us about the types, uses
and maintenance of different control valves and pipelines that are
connected to the separators and scrubbers like the pneumatic
control valves that are powered by air and the motorized control
valves which are powered by electricity. Also, we conducted data
gathering and surveying of a production and injection wells for the
steam production monitoring, conducted dewatering of sump for
downcomer inspection and conducted installation of skillet blind
for isolation of two-phase steam and installation of gasket or ring
gasket in valve.

WEEK 4

Again, we were tasked to do the ORDC on different wellsites. It

is a daily routine activity of every steam gathering system
operators. The following are the different tasks conducted by our
Team; (1) Conduct job safety and job hazard analysis, this includes
applying lockforce driving technique for the company service
driver, wearing prescribe PPEs when in field, always apply 3-points
contact to avoid falling from elevated places, etc. (2) Go to Aboitiz

valves which are powered by electricity. Also, they taught us the
process of gathering data and surveying of a production and
injection wells for the steam production monitoring. We conducted
dewatering of sump for downcomer inspection and conducted
installation of skillet blind for isolation of two-phase steam and
installation of gasket or ring gasket in valve.

WEEK 5

At week 5, we are assigned to the Central Operations Control

(COC) room, this is where the control facilities of all the steam
gathering operation system is being monitored. As a COC operator
it is important to always stay focused and careful because a
simple mistake might cause a generation losses for the company.
In the COC room we were taught about how they monitored the
wellhead pressure, pressure vessels pressure and water level,
openings of the control valve, sump level and operating pumps.
They taught us about what they do if the area operation team
operators conduct an activity like flow test, contributing test, level
alarm testing in a separator and scrubber and stroking of the
control valve. They also explain to us why there is a tendency for a
scrubber to have a high level of condensate and what they will do
if they meet this kind of abnormalities.

In maintenance, we disassemble and assembled master valves,

conducted dewatering of sump for downcomer inspection and
conducted installation of skillet blind for isolation of two-phase
steam and installation of gasket or ring gasket in valve. We
installed downcomer to a wellhead and installed wellhead support
and lubricator valve.

WEEK 6

On our last week (6th week), we had our Trainee report that was
held in the main Conference room during the Monthly Circle
Meeting. All the employee of each department, the department
manager, department supervisors and other operation and
maintenance personnel (our mentors) serve as your audience. This
is a completion requirement of the company that we should have a
presentation on what weve learned during our training period in
the company.

We trainee participated in conducting flow test of a new re-drill

production well (Bar 11).

CHAPTER 3

ASSESSMENT OF OJT PROGRAM

A. What have I learned from the experience?

B. My experience with the people around me

Being on an actual work field is different from what I have

always imagined it to be. In fact, it is the exact opposite of my OJT
expectations, but in a good way because ever since my freshman
year in BU as a Mechanical Engineering Student I have always
been waiting for my 4th year Summer to come knowing that it is
when Ill be having my OJT and yes, though it makes me feel
excited and challenged it also makes me feel scared. Scared
because what if all that I have learned in four years was not
enough? What if I make a mistake while on the work field? What if
unfortunately I get to have those strict supervisors I read and
heard about and most of all I was scared that being a female
would be a hindrance when it comes to performing my duties.

My On-Job-Training in PGPC only proved that I was wrong to

be scared. They made me feel like I belong, that I can certainly do
my duties regardless of my gender. That it is okay to make a
mistake, that it is okay to ask if you dont know, in fact they
encourage me to keep asking questions. And the Supervisors and
Manager, all the employees are very supportive and inspiring, they
even shared that most of them are from Bicol University also. My
experience with the people around me was one of the most
memorable experience of my College life because I was with the
right people.

A. The most memorable event during my OJT

The most memorable activities I experienced during the

training was when the operations manager asked me if I knew
him, my answer was no. I was extremely ashamed of myself after
my co-trainees told who he was. On my part, I do know the name
of the operation manager but I didnt know him personally, so
thats what happened.

Another was when we bought pineapple to the vendor at the

field. The fruits were sure tasty and sweet but after having a bit
too much, my tongue started to itch. I got quite uncomfortable
with what happened but just kept the situation to myself.

B. What I can recommend for the improvement of the OJT

Program

C. My advice to those who will take their OJT in the near

future

To those who will take their OJT in the near future: Dont be
scared. Believe in yourself that you can do it. You might know all
the formulas in every book but the most important is your
personality and attitude toward your responsibilities and the
people around you. And asking questions doesnt make you stupid
so keep asking until you satisfy your curiosity. Be respectful to
everyone, not just the bosses or those on the top ranks because it
is better to be in a friendly work field, but know the limitations,
you can still be friendly while being professional. Be a team player,
you should always remember that it is not a one-man job. You may
know the latest technologies but you have to respect those who
had been on the field before you because what they know is all
based on field experiences and well, experience is the best
teacher. And lastly, as an engineering you should know this
already: Safety first! Because your personal safety is your
responsibility.
