n this fast-paced, instant gratication
world, its good to know there are
those who still appreciate quality and
sometimes the wait it takes to obtain it.
Building a new home can take several years
and completing one with landscaping and
furnishings can take even longer. And while
it can sometimes seem a never-ending task,
a desire for quality should always overcome
any longing for a quick x.
Every day our senses are bombarded with
the latest this or the newest that and its often
difcult to decide just what we do want. When
planning a home project, having an end result
in mind and working with a plan of action
should always be uppermost in your mind if
you want to achieve a quality result.
Im often asked how to get started when
planning a new build, renovation or interiors
project. I always advise starting with the end
in mind. That is, look at what you are trying
to achieve and work backwards from there.
I nd the best way to distil ideas is to look at
projects, furniture, colours and ideas in books
and magazines. Create a le of all the things you
love and if you have the desire, create a mood
board so you start to gain an understanding
of your likes and dislikes. Over time you will
edit and edit again, but thats the best way to
get down to the core of your ideas and feel
comfortable with your choices.
There is no right or wrong style or design
ethos either. Today we have so many choices and
its ne to go with what you love dont let you just in time for all the celebrations over
anyone tell you otherwise! I always recommend
using professional advice when you nd you
just cant get there yourself. This doesnt mean
handing over your heart and soul to a stranger;
professionals are there to help you nd your own
style and the good ones will not impose their
own view but help you discover products and
ideas you may never have thought of.

Each profession has its place in the equation,
from the architect or designer, builder and
other home specialists to the interior designer,
decorator and landscaper. If your professionals
can work together from an early stage so that
each understands the desired outcome, then so
much the better; it all comes back to planning.
Our home projects this issue range from
a new modernist design in Germanys hilly
south to the renovation of a classic Toorak
abode. Each project reects the individuality
of its occupants yet provides the same basic
requirements of amenity, comfort and style.
Some projects celebrate a love of colour and
others a restrained neutral palette. There are
myriad choices for building materials and
interior nishes too and each home has that
personal stamp that can only be achieved with
a customised design.
There are some projects you can undertake
relatively quickly though and a new kitchen is
one of them. With summer nearly here, weve
put together 25 clever kitchen ideas to inspire
the festive season and summer holidays. And
our stunning tablescapes feature is a feast in
itself gorgeous colours, beautiful glassware,
linen and accessories to add some sparkle and
glamour to your special occasions.
With entertaining very much on our minds
over summer, our outdoor living feature has

become a lifelong obsession shared by
many across the globe, especially here in
During a recent trip to Paris, James Cleland met up with Australia surng. Through surng and
sculptor Arik Levy, who graciously took time out of his other water sports, Arik had his rst taste of
commercial design. He began by working with
busy schedule to talk about what makes him tick like-minded people who shared his passion
and they made surfboards for the public. At

His career has seen him rise from
the beaches of Tel Aviv to Europes
vibrant, ever-changing and eclectic
world of design. His strong work ethic tempers
an unadulterated exuberance for artistic
expression and design. Being both creative and
hardworking, hes been able to forge a lifestyle
that not only serves the practical necessities of
earning a living, but also allows him to full
his mercurial need for artistic expression.
When I met Arik at his low-key warehouse
studio, located in Pariss 20th arrondissement,
any preconceived notion of the typical Parisian
designer completely evaporated. His modest and
earthy demeanour was completely disarming and
although he had a palpable presence, he was warm
in his welcome and genuinely eager to discuss his
career and passion. Its hard not to get caught up
in his exuberance.
Tel Aviv was a tough place to grow up
as an artist in the 1970s, but it was a great
environment for an industrial designer. Arik
the time there were no local surf brands in
Israel and airbrushing designs on surfboards
provided an outlet for his artistic desires and
allowed him to watch people ride waves on his
works of art. Later, he ran several surf outlets
and water-sport clubs.
After a three-year stint in the Israeli army,
living the surng lifestyle and learning
business skills from his graphic design and
surf businesses, Arik developed a passion for
all things art, especially sculpting. He says this
most likely came from the method they used

to make their surfboards; they were literally
sculpting them from foam and breglass.
In 1986, Arik participated in his rst
sculpture show. Two years later he was part of
a group sculpture exhibition, which prompted
him to move to Europe where he earned
a distinction in industrial design at the
now-closed Art Center Europe in Switzerland.
The late 1980s and early 1990s was
a period of exploration and self-discovery for
Arik. He toured the world, living in Australia,
Hawaii, California and Japan. During this time
he consolidated his ideas and methods and
produced work for exhibitions.
Moving from Geneva to Paris with his wife in
the mid-1990s was the next big step in Ariks life
and career. While ghting his way into Pariss
design world, he worked in a multitude of creative
scenes. As much as he loved pure art, practical
design was the breadwinner and an enjoyable way
to fund his true passion. His big break came with
the help of gallery owner Jacqueline Frydman,
whom he dubs his midwife because she aided
the birth of his career in France. Through an
exhibition of light sculptures, Ariks reputation
as a designer began to gain prominence; design
was now his public life and art his private life

Ever since his rst dip into the global design
industry, Ariks art has evolved and grown. Today
his work ranges from small conceptual pieces
that exist only as a sketch or mock-up to abstract
forms that play with shape and space, as well as
massive, monolithic pieces.
Many of his larger works are private
collector items, museum pieces or public
works. He believes that with each acquisition
he gives a piece of himself and in this
way feels a connection with anyone who
experiences his work, no matter where

they are. Some private collectors have
become friends and update him on the life
of his works. Each evolves differently in
its environment and Arik feels the pieces
are enhanced as they come to reect their
environment and the attitudes and desires of
their caretakers.
Even now, with all the demands of his life
including being a father, husband, business
owner, lecturer, industrial designer and
a sought-after sculptor and artist Arik
constantly experiments and strives to evolve the
way he works. Over time, it has become much
easier for him to conceive, conceptualise and
create his art. He sees himself as a feeling
artist and endeavours to contribute to the social
fabric by weaving his work into peoples lives.
By means of his public sculptures, interior and
exterior consumer products and complete multi-
use environments, he attempts to communicate
with society. He urges artists everywhere to learn
to communicate and engage because he believes
that for art to live, breathe and evolve, and to
continue to enrich our culture and civilisation, it
cant be hidden from the public eye.
After our interview, I was given a brief tour
of Ariks studio. Concepts and favourite pieces
are strewn about, some of them placed carefully,
others haphazardly due to a recent move. His
staff is busy in the open-plan work space while
Arik shows me into his ofce, which is scattered
with more concept pieces and works in progress.
He proudly shows me his idea factory, a work
space hes rather proud of. Before I leave, I tell
Arik Im amazed at how much he has on his

Larsen wears many different hats
when it comes to his work. Some
days hes an architect, some days
he designs furniture and sometimes hes an
installation artist. But on all days hes highly
creative and super talented.
Creating everything from garden installation
art to a weekend getaway home and pop-up
clothing stores, Sigurd draws his inspiration
from what is directly in front of him. I guess
I draw inspiration from the limitations of a
given project, he explains. If there were no
limits, I would not know where to start.

Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School
of Architecture, in Copenhagen, and worked
in Holland and New York during his studies.
After graduating, he moved to Berlin to design
public spaces.

project on my own, so I quit my job and started my
own company working with architecture, furniture
and art, he says. Since then, we have realised
projects on many different scales and have worked

by things produced in mass
quantities. Whether theyre
things for the home or things
for the garden, we all want them. But the best
things have memories attached to them, such
as things that were given to us by loved ones.
These are priceless and will be treasured for
decades, often becoming heirlooms.
When I visit antique stores, I marvel at the
beautiful furniture on display. Im amazed
at the quality and durability that has enabled
this furniture to exist for decades, sometimes
centuries. Fine detail and craftsmanship make
these pieces valuable and, best of all, they are
always on trend.
The same cannot be said of much of the
furniture available today. We seem to have
forgotten to plan for the future. Modern gurus
worldwide preach about living in the moment
and we have extended this doctrine to include
the things we buy. This philosophy has created
a disposable society.
Purchasing in this way has serious global
implications, including:
Unethical production a thing might not
cost much when we buy it, but chances are
someone down the line has paid for it, usually
with their quality of life.
Unethical manufacturing mass
production is a strain on the environment.
Chemicals and gases are secreted into the
air, and soil and water and other valuable
resources are being exhausted.

love of design is woven into Stuttgart culture, as is the love
of good wine, opera and luxury automobiles. Sprawling
across Germanys hilly south and fringed by vineyards
and the Black Forest, Stuttgart is peppered with theatres,
galleries and acclaimed art museums, not to mention the Mercedes-Benz
and Porsche museums. Amid the cultural and artistic buzz of this city
are the crisp lines and sophistication of SU House, designed by German
architect and interior designer, Alexander Brenner.
Perched on a grassy knoll with stunning views of the city, SU House
is striking with its multi-levelled, cubic design, yet it is also in harmony
with the surrounding landscape. On stepping into the villa from the
second-oor entrance, guests are welcomed by sun-soaked rooms that
seamlessly merge together in an expanse of Tauerngrn stone, oak and
oor-to-ceiling glass. V

Alexander says these spacious, light-lled rooms were central to the
design of SU House. Our inspiration is always to create a durable,
lasting and profound image that, in the interplay of various light,
acquires the ability to move us again and again, he says.
The homeowner had the blocks original 1930s house pulled down to
create this residence, which had to be suitable for both entertaining and
family life. As an avid art collector, she also desired a home that would
showcase not simply hold her extensive art collection.
Emerging from this vision, SU House presents itself as both a home
and gallery. An outdoor entertaining area rests at the heart of the
house, with living areas and a kitchen owing around it. Upstairs, four
bedrooms and bathrooms enclose a gallery, while on the bottom level a
grand sauna and pool area extends out to landscaped gardens. V

Bringing the outdoors in was an important element in the design of

SU House. Wall-length windows have been used throughout to make
the most of natural light while also staging the surrounding garden and
the back woods, says Alexander. The house boasts a variety of outdoor
living zones, each with a unique quality and orientation. The terraces
were treated with the same importance as the interiors. Due to the
oor-to-ceiling glazing which is largely slidable and continuous
ooring, the exterior and interior merge, says Alexander.
Despite the exibility of each room, clever details, such as carefully
selected feature lighting and a dropped, oral ceiling, dene each
space while creating interest and intimacy. Care has also been taken to
distinguish private spaces from family ones. In the master bedroom,
for example, earthy tones, oak ooring and a built-in replace foster a
sense of warmth and seclusion, like stepping into a luxurious cave. V

Alexander describes the home as a self-contained world. Openness and
views everywhere characterise this house, as well as more framed and cosy
rooms which offer protection and security, he says. The atmosphere of
the master bedroom is echoed in the living room, where large, low-resting
lounges create an inviting and private space. Firewood is stored beneath
the re and extends along the entire length of the wall, injecting an edge of
subtle sophistication.
With such vast rooms, SU House easily could have become a cold and
lonely dwelling, yet Alexander has overcome this by carefully balancing
privacy with spaciousness, and the outdoor with the indoor. By mixing the
subtle beauty and comfort of the natural world with contemporary design,
Alexander has created a home that is warm, spacious and full of light. HD

urchasing a lacklustre block of ats built more than half
a century ago seems like a strange move for a couple that
wanted the perfect contemporary home. Not only were the
Melbourne ats uninspiring, they were in poor condition
according to Russell Barrett, whose architectural rm assisted with
the makeover. It was a three-storey block of one-bedroom ats with
no particular architectural merit, he says. It had the typical timber
re escape at the rear, which exited into an overgrown and neglected
garden and car park. V

We decided to maintain the cream brick faades and do any new

work in a contrasting material, explains Russell, who worked in
conjunction with builder Julian Barlow. They extended the rear of the
building with a structure that is contemporary in design yet also links
with the architecture of the existing building. While it is quite clear
from the faades that the building has been altered, old and new are
successfully integrated, says Russell. This look continues in the interior
where some of the buildings original details have been kept. The
existing common staircase has been retained and opens to all oors,
says Russell. Apart from the self-contained ground-oor apartment, the
remaining two oors have been opened up to the stairwell and together
with the adjacent light courtyard, this forms the nucleus of the house.
The clients chose to keep the ground oor separate from the rest of
the home because they wanted a self-contained space for their adult
children to live in should they ever return home. This oor also contains
a garage for cars.
As you move through the oors, the main hub of the home evolves.
Sleeping quarters are on the second oor and living spaces are on the
top level. The perks of buying a three-storey block of ats are instantly
clear on this top oor. Filled with light, the level is open, bright and
blessed with views over Melbournes rooftops.
The bright colours used in the furnishings complement the open
nature of this second oor. Interior designer Jane Charlwood has
brought together and harmonised the indoors and out, creating a home
that is family-friendly and functional. The natural aesthetic of the timber
oors and the sophisticated nature of the black ttings and furnishings
have been brought to life by dashes of bright green, blue and orange. V

The homes orientation also adds to its bright nature. The house was
located along a north-facing laneway, which provided an opportunity to
maximise solar gain within the site constraints, explains Russell. But
this also created problems. Being on the corner meant the home was
highly exposed, not to mention the challenges that come with working
on a multi-levelled property in an urban environment, particularly with
neighbours and the council.
This home shows you should never judge a book by its cover. What
was once considered an unremarkable three-storey apartment block has
been transformed into a stylish, contemporary three-storey home that is

et in the wealthy Melbourne suburb of Toorak, this daring home
makeover is the stuff designers dream of. The client a wealthy,
ambitious young professional was happy to get involved in the
process and, best of all, he wasnt afraid to opt for something bold.
So much so, interior designer Charles Prior, of Baxter Creative, says they had
to be careful not to get too carried away. We had to tone it down a little to
suit the suburb and to ensure the work wasnt over-capitalising, he laughs.
The client had bought the home several years earlier as a xer-upper.
It was liveable, but only just. The kitchen and bathroom ttings were 20
years old, but they were good quality and the workmanship was excellent.
With a few minor repairs, he was able to live in the home until he was
ready for the grand overhaul.
Not that he wanted anything too drastic. The client was after an
extraordinary home, but one that didnt sacrice the feel and grandeur
of the existing place. Work was largely decorative rather than structural,
which was good news for Charles, who says he would much rather update
a dwelling than start again. I always try to avoid massive knockdowns and
rebuilds because there is just so much wastage, he says.

Charles is based in Sydney, which was not without its challenges.
Not only did he have to work with new builders and suppliers, much
of the decision-making had to be done over the phone. Nevertheless,
the brave client and distant designer forged ahead, beginning with the
master bedroom, where they began by sorting out storage for the clients
ever-evolving wardrobe and shoe collection.
This room is slightly different from the rest of the home, where
sleek lines and cool, masculine trends dominate. Instead, Charles has
embraced a more glamorous hotel feel, installing a soft, padded
headboard, a delicate chandelier and thick, chocolate Cavalier
Bremworth carpet. V

Next, the rear of the home was gutted and the original three-bedroom
layout was recongured to become two large bedrooms, one of them with
a massive walk-in robe, plus a study with a built-in desk and shelving. The
original oorboards have been retained in the study and entrance and have
been stained with a mixture of Black Japan and American Walnut stains.
Its a subtle touch, but the old, darkened wood adds a slightly earthy,
rustic note to the clean, modern spaces. In the hallway, the oorboards are
complemented by a series of brass lanterns that add warmth and heart to
the home and prevent it from becoming all too sober.
Charles has opted for polished concrete oors throughout the
open-plan kitchen and living room. Tinted on site, the concrete has
an unusual, almost marble-like aesthetic, and has been continued into the

small outdoor entertaining area. Thanks to this ooring and the use of
slightly formal custom-made outdoor seating, this area appears almost as
part of the living room, with little more than a sheer curtain and bifold
doors to mark the transition.
One of the most memorable moments in the renovation was when we
pulled down the ceiling in the roof spaces and discovered we could raise
the ceiling at the rear of the home, Charles says. This meant he could
really capitalise on the beautiful ow from indoor to out and create
a sweeping, expansive feel for the dining room and long, narrow
kitchen. He opted to keep joinery in the kitchen fairly simple, nishing
the cabinetry with satin polyurethane and adding a feature timber panel
in limed American oak. The panel does a good job of bringing out the
vein in the marble benchtop.
Charles says the light-lled kitchen is one of his favourite parts of
the home. For his client, its the sneaky butlers pantry to the side that
includes a second sink and extra bench space. It ensures the kitchen
always looks good, even when entertaining, Charles says. V

ecently retired and ready to downsize, the owners of this
brand-new Brisbane riverside apartment were in love with
its sleek, contemporary ttings, but they werent about to get
conservative in their retirement years. As lovers of all things
bright, bold and beautiful, they enlisted principal interior designer
John Croft, of John Croft Design, to inject some personality into the place.
Having engaged John previously to refurbish three other homes over the past
30 years, the couple was ready to truly embrace his signature style a mix
of all things vibrant and fun with classic shapes and considered design.
Im loud and noisy and I design for people who are quite condent
in themselves and their tastes, John says. This couple wanted a classic
look, but not cold, contemporary minimalism. And they wanted something
completely different from what theyve always had, which can be hard to
do if youre always using the same furniture even if you are getting
it re-upholstered.
The couple held on to a few treasured pieces, including an old
grandfather clock, but almost all of the apartments furnishings have
been bought new, with John and interior designer Lloyd Hodgkinson,
who assisted John on this project, opting for a mix of colours, patterns
and design styles. It cant look too staged, John explains. You dont
want everything to match that sort of thing you could just order from
a catalogue. V

 In many ways, John had been handed the perfect blank canvas. The
grand, sweeping luxury apartment covers the entire oor of the nine-storey
block and, given the generous proportions of each room, he could afford
to go all out with the size and volume of his furnishings. The existing
ttings were simple and sleek, including white walls and granite oors in
charcoal the perfect tone to enhance Johns vivid palette. Hes added
bright fabrics to each room, a bold move that complements the homes
contemporary style, while adding a little colour and personality.
Such is the case in the dining room, where John has had simple 1920s
French-style timber dining chairs upholstered in a striking purple-and-
yellow velvet. Its not the sort of fabric youd expect for that chair, but
it works, John says. And as fashions change or the fabric wears out, the
clients will be able to choose a new pattern, but the chair will always be
in style.
Even with such generous rooms, John has had to carefully balance
his patterned fabrics. In the living room, for example, hes chosen bold
yet solid colours for the two large sofas and hes complemented these
block pieces with a pair of armchairs in a wild yellow-and-purple-
foliage-patterned velvet. Hes placed them beside a big window lled
with views of old gums and the Brisbane River, which further balances
the design, making a gorgeous feature of the armchairs without allowing
them to overwhelm the room.
Another exercise in balance, the master bedroom shares the bold
aesthetics of the rest of the apartment, yet is a calming, soothing space.
John says a master bedroom should always be a little softer than
a homes living areas. Its got to be simple and not challenging at all,
he says. My clients are usually busy people and they just need
a space of rest and relaxation. In this case, hes opted for a few grand The media room is

John installed two different but complementary rugs. Both

have been custom designed and handmade, one of them is based on
a paisley print that John had seen on a swatch of fabric. The fabric
was too busy for a long hallway such as this, so John had the pattern
blown up and made darker so it wouldnt show the dirt important
for a rug in such a high-trafc area. The second rug begins at the
homes glass entrance doors and, while it echoes the paisley pattern,
it has a brighter, autumnal design. Being quite different, the two rugs
divide the hallway and make it appear shorter than it is.
The apartment is now a classic, comfortable and practical home,
a far cry from its rather stark beginnings. This is a totally different
time in this couples lives and their new home celebrates just that,
John says. HD

he attention to detail in this grand Georgian-inspired home
is evident from the moment you step into its impressive

Intriguing shapes, levels and contours
make for a magnicent, multi faceted
new build in Sydneys northwest

I
n a recently developed area in Sydney, a site proposal for a new
build began when the possibilities became too intriguing to ignore.
Recognising the potential of the Bella Vista site, the owner worked
closely with Jeremy McCulla from Urban Harmony Design to set
the build in motion.
New designs were drawn up to create an integrated design featuring
a curved swimming pool and a circular sunken lounge room. The
design brief in its simplest form called for a build that maintained the
architectural character of the area, while also adding aesthetic elements
that distinguish it from other homes on the street. Externally, the faade
juxtaposes the simplicity of the smooth, rendered walls with Alpine
Stone cladding and blackbutt timber screening. The northerly rear
aspect of the site includes glazing elements that take advantage
of the location of the pool and yard, as well as providing passive
solar assistance.
Throughout the home, impressive curved-glass panels accentuate
the symmetry that ows through the design, framing the pool and spa.
Natural light and ventilation penetrate deep into the building through
double-height spaces and operable windows, allowing for easy air ow
and connectivity.
A music studio provides a transition between the basement and
ground-oor areas of the home. This space was challenging to work
with as the clients wanted it to be incorporated into existing living
areas, while simultaneously offering a degree of separation. To
overcome this difculty, the construction team at Gremmo Homes
added curved internal glazing and raised the oor height of the room.
Stringybark parquetry timber ooring was also used as its retro styling
works well with the Wurlitzer jukebox and classical musical instruments
that were included later. V

Environmentally, there are many elements of this home that enhance

its sustainability, such as the three-kilowatt photovoltaic system that was
installed to help with energy conservation. Skylights above the alfresco
and kitchen areas improve the amount of natural light and
a comprehensive CBUS lighting system manages the use of power.
A 10,000-litre underground water tank is reticulated to all external taps,
toilets and garden irrigation.
The cohesive management of the home, pool and landscaping design,
as well as the construction process, ensures the home is both functional
and aesthetically pleasing while maintaining a high level of attention to
quality and detail. This has resulted in the successful realisation of the

T
o blend or not to blend? This is one of the biggest challenges
confronting those extending an existing property and,
according to builder James Watkin, its where many good
designs come unstuck. People often try to make the
extension blend in perfectly with the existing home, or they make the
extension completely modern and it doesnt blend in at all, he says.
James, who owns Jakin Construction Group, was handed plans for an
old workers cottage on Sydneys North Shore that was to have a crisp,
bright and slightly industrial extension. It was a brave order, but with
a few tweaks to the original design, his team has achieved the Holy
Grail: an extension that does not merely complement the existing
structure, but also enhances it a fact acknowledged by a recent win at
the Master Builders Association awards.
To modernise the old cottage, the team replaced its terracotta roof
tiles with Colorbond metal sheeting and installed the same spotted-gum
ooring used in the extension. Construction work on the new kitchen,
living room and spare room had to be extremely precise to achieve the
clean lines the owners wanted. With no cornices or architraves, there
would be nowhere to hide inconsistencies. V

 Each piece of hardwood used for the staircase tread had to be cut on
site to ensure a perfect t. However, no element of the seven-month
project was more demanding than the exposed dark-blue structural
steel that frames the exterior grey cladding. Its unusual to see
cladding used in a sleek design like this, but it adds a unique texture
and gives the faade an industrial look. However, installation of the
supporting steel was a tough job; not only is it almost three storeys high,
all welding and bolts had to be seamless because the steel is entirely
exposed. It was like working with a piece of jewellery, but doing it with
a crane, James laughs.

n no rush to see her two teenage children move out, Annie Leo
wanted a place where her kids and their friends would feel right
at home yet still offer her the space and peace to do her own
entertaining. Set just a few homes back from the beach in the
laid-back Adelaide suburb of Glenelg, the site Annie had chosen was
perfectly situated for such gatherings, but it was not without its challenges.
For a start, the deep, narrow block runs from north to south, which
means it only gets sun in the middle of the day. Hating the idea of having
lights on all the time, Annie approached the team at Medallion Homes
with the somewhat challenging brief to create a home that would harness
every bit of light that falls on the block. As if that wasnt enough, she also
wanted space that despite the shape of the block wasnt too long
and skinny and would be large enough to accommodate the three very
different lifestyles of its occupants.

areas, Annie says. It means they can have their friends over or play

modern look with a lot of character and different patterns, she says.
Surrounded by enormous glass windows, the sunny courtyard with
its sophisticated pool appears as part of the homes interior, a look

spaces, this grand Sydney home has
overcome the challenges of a dicult block

elf-confessed Francophiles, the owners of this family home
wanted to bring a touch of France namely its grand country
estates to Sydneys northern suburbs. They opted for a
traditional Mansard roof a steep, double-pitch roof with
living space usually found in historic buildings of at least ve storeys.
Given the Mansard roof reached the height of its popularity during the
reign of Napoleon III, it was certainly an unusual build for the team at
Starr Constructions.
But this was just one aspect of the challenging design. For a start, the
property is smaller than those in the rest of the neighbourhood, where
blocks were traditionally sold as quarter acres. The architect wanted the
home to suit the local vernacular, but she also had to deal with a steep
drop towards the back of the property. The team at Starr Constructions
built a lower ground oor on the steep land, which is not visible from
street level, and this has made for an expansive four-bedroom home. V

Inside, the house feels incredibly spacious, thanks in part to the

double-height ceilings above the living spaces on the middle level. Starr
Constructions added even more space by building a Mansard roof over
the garage, which is several metres in front of the home. The living
space afforded by the roof is used as an ofce, media room and guest
room. Because the homeowners have adult children and a grandchild,
the home features many of these exible spaces which can be used to
accommodate the growing family.
Although the block wasnt an easy one to work with, Starr
Constructions was able to develop a real sense of space in the home;
there are constant surprises, which give the house a unique air.
Adding to the challenge of the build, the neighbours to the north were
building their own multiple-storey home, which would block much of
the northerly sun. This has been countered by setting the home 18m

esigned with Queenslands tropical north in mind, the latest
luxury project home from David Reid Homes has all the
features of a considered modern home: energy-efcient
lighting, louvred windows that capitalise on south-easterly
sea breezes, and lightweight eco-friendly building materials that provide
perfect insulation. But perhaps its strongest design credential is that the
St Clair has been built to last a lifetime, big enough for a young family
yet still comfortable when the decades march on and mum and dad
become less mobile.
Downstairs is a large master bedroom, complete with his and hers
wardrobes (hers is slightly larger) and a generous ensuite with double
sinks and a luxurious double shower. The three childrens bedrooms,
plus a rumpus room and media room, are on the second storey, which
means all the noise stays upstairs. Its a practical tout for a young
family but Andrew Paul, one of the directors of the companys Mackay
and Toowoomba branch, points out that the spacious downstairs area
is also ideal for an older couple. As you get older you wont need to
go upstairs if mobility is an issue, but there will still be room for the
grandkids to stay over, he says. V

For now, mum and dad can enjoy the enormous kitchen with its two
island benches, sleek joinery and optional stone benchtops. One of
Andrews favourite features is the downstairs study nook that is visible
from the kitchen, allowing parents to keep an eye on the kids homework
while getting dinner on the go. Theres a second study nook upstairs,
perfect for older children, so theres no excuses when it comes to
homework. It should raise the IQ of Mackay by a few per cent,
Andrew jokes.
Another great feature is the large, louvred windows that ll the
home with fresh air and light. Combined with the ceiling fans,
Andrew says the windows are so effective at cooling the home
theres little need for the optional ducted air-conditioning even
in Mackays sticky summer heat.
These features make the St Clair ideal for northern Queensland, but
the home can be built anywhere in Australia and adapted to suit any

very line in this sleek St Kilda kitchen has been considered,
from the detail on the integrated ovens to the handles used for
the unique pantry system. Not even lighting was allowed to
break the ow of this spectacular open-plan room. To look at
it, one might be tempted to describe the kitchens design as simple,
but the fact that Con Moshopoulos, owner of Urban Kitchens, held
a total of eight meetings with the clients over an entire year suggests
the complexities of producing such beautiful simplicity.
The owners of this period family home wanted to renovate the rear
of the building with an addition that would be contemporary, yet in
keeping with the rest of the house. They worked with Con to design
the laundry and the kitchen, which was to be the hub of the home.
The clients had the design approved by their architect and from there
Con worked closely with him and the clients to ensure continuity
throughout the renovation. V

With few features to hide poor workmanship, a design like this
demands incredibly careful construction. Without a doubt, the crowning
glory is the generous island bench that has been covered in a marble
benchtop handpicked by the client. Con added a panel of Navlam
sandblasted Arcadian oak veneer to the base of the island and used
the same veneer to cover the length of the cabinets above the sink. Set
against the crisp white kitchen joinery, which has been sprayed with
a two-pack paint in Antique White, these dark, chocolate-coloured
veneer panels bring out the tones in the marble and give the kitchen
warmth without detracting from its clean look and stylish lines.
Guests are often surprised at just how much storage this new kitchen
offers. Key to this is the pantry with its silent, at-sliding doors by
Bortoluzzi. The pantry runs along a 2.5-metre wall and offers the same

system and the motion system are activated, cameras begin
recording on a DVR in the CDP.
The quality level was set extremely high and we can
proudly say that we achieved it, Alberto says. The owners
did an amazing job with their own thoughts and inputs into the
project and the overall design of the home and interiors. We

with a climate like ours, it makes perfect sense. Suppliers have caught
on to this shift and there are now many options for those who want to
make the most of their backyard, from grand kitchens to cabanas and
wet-edge pools. Over the following pages, John Storch, principal of A
Total Concept Landscape Architects and Outdoor Living Area Designers,
shares his tips for creating the perfect garden sanctuary. V

biggest investments youll make
for your home and it can add
immeasurable resale value,
so its worth getting it right. Todays
designs are less complicated than they
once were, favouring straight, clean lines
and simple colours.
A Total Concept specialises in the
integration of indoor and outdoor areas,
designing swimming pools, gardens and
cabanas for dwellings ranging from simple
family homes to elaborate residential and
resort-style developments. During the past
few years, A Total Concept has concentrated
on developing good-value, high-impact
designs that use simple, chunky edges to

THINK IT THROUGH
Begin by analysing your property for
aspects such as north-facing locations, shade
requirements, loud neighbours, trafc noise,
prevailing winds and potential views. Take
these into account when you position your
pool and the associated garden components.
Youll also need to bear in mind the size of
your property and what you can t in.
Expect the process to take about three
months. This will give you time to organise
contracts with your pool builder and landscape
contractor, select a design, get council approval
and, nally, have the pool constructed.
Consider the budget you are setting aside

Can all the works be undertaken at once or
does the project need to be staged over a
period of time as funds become available?
If the project is to be staged, consider the
order of the work youre going to have
done so that nished works wont need to
be ripped up at a later stage to complete
new works. Theres nothing worse than
having new paving laid and then realising
that drainage was not allowed for or
that lighting cables should have been
installed underneath.
SMALL WONDER
Swimming pools are more popular than ever,
but theyre also getting smaller. This may
be because more people are living in urban
environments with higher-density living, or
a reection of economic times and tougher
authority development controls. Nowadays,
homeowners seem to prefer their outdoors to
be a fusion of indoor and outdoor spaces, not
just an outside living area with a swimming
pool. This is much easier to achieve with
a smaller pool.

a water feature, acting as the focal point of
the courtyard. A plunge pool is typically
smaller than 6x4m and benches are often
placed around all sides of the pool to create
sun ledges and swimouts. Plunge pools are
generally used for entertaining rather than
exercise, but swim jets can be incorporated
to keep a swimmer in place while exercising.

pavilion or cabana with a luxurious bathroom
and kitchenette facilities. It may also
incorporate a day bed, a table and chairs for
entertaining and beautiful soft furnishings,
including candles and sculptures. A Total

realistic budgets for their planting projects
and many recognise that the garden needs to be

whats really exciting is the type of plants people
are asking for. Clients no longer feel an obligation
to stick to strict planting styles like tropical,
native, formal and cottage gardens. Instead theyre
mixing styles, incorporating aspects of each look
to create a new unied whole.
Cottage-style plants are making a comeback
and they mix well with succulents. Grasses are
also being mixed with succulents, and palms
and natives are being shaped as clouds and

1. This kitchen was designed for a young family that likes
to entertain a lot. The house is in Sydneys east with a great
view, so the orientation was important. The family wanted
a large 4.5-metre island bench and an open-plan space with
nothing to impede the view. The island opens up the room and
provides plenty of space for cooking and bar seating without
compromising the stunning view.
The goal was to create bespoke joinery that would become
the focal point of the kitchen. Black timber-veneer cabinets
have been teamed with white polyurethane panels, silver
handles and a sleek glass splashback to make a statement that
does not take the focus away from the kitchens surroundings.
The clients also wanted a touch of pizzazz, particularly when
entertaining at night, so we had the onyx splashback backlit.
Weve used high-end appliances including a Gaggenau
oven, Liebherr fridge/freezer and a Siemens induction
cooktop. The granite benchtop is softened by the long, backlit
onyx feature that lights the honed, antique-brown nish. The
pendant lights that hang above the island bench produce
a subtle amount of light with their elongated bowl shapes.

3. Smooth, oating joinery gives this kitchen an ultra-modern

look. The island block has been given a contemporary cantilevered
benchtop, fashioned from bluestone to complement its oating style
and the cupboards that line the room. Designed by Con Moshopoulos.

something funky. He required a functional, usable kitchen that would
work well for a young family within the limitations of the space.
A cupboard at the kitchens entrance (previously used as the kitchen
pantry) was removed, increasing light and space. Mirrored kickers
were utilised to exaggerate the oor area so the room feels larger. False
walls, laminated in a highlight colour, were used to disguise pipes that
run between the oors. The overhead cabinetry with lift-up doors was
reduced in height to compensate for the highlight windows above, thus
allowing the windows to let in an abundance of light.
Southern Cross tiles in Kiwi enhance the look of the Hebel
brick while mirroring the colour of the bright-green Smeg fridge.
The Caesarstone benchtop in Mosaici Carbone was chosen to
complement the black-and-white chequered oor. A space-saving
pantry stores the microwave and three large drawers, adding

a warehouse-style studio apartment, therefore it was essential to maximise
the perception of space and light. Satin and gloss-white nishes were
selected and a neutral-toned limestone oor was installed.

The industrial-style lift-up doors in high-gloss Alaskan timber are in
keeping with the propertys warehouse style. The two fridges have been
integrated to de-emphasise their impact on the space. The abundance
of large drawers and the pantry with its four inner drawers enable the
owners to store and organise all of their kitchen goods. The nishing
touch is the use of Essa Stone for the kitchen benchtop. Resembling
concrete, this benchtop marries the concept of industry and modernity,

mainly for its platinum colour that suited the rest of the house. This is
a rather small room so all the cabinets have been integrated into the wall.
The table is built on a mirrored wall that hides a TV screen and increases
the feeling of space. The lacquered cabinet was made in platinum,
a custom colour to match the mosaic and the oor. Every element

complement the homes architecture. We chose Essa Stones White
Trufe for the benchtop as it complements both the high-gloss Galaxy
Pearl vinyl doors and the Nepean Beach back panel. We did not
want to spoil the clean, straight look with handles so we chose Blum
Tip-On hinges for the doors and Tara aluminium handle strips for the
drawers. This way we could keep the soft-close function of the Blum
Tandembox runner Andi Pajewski, designer for Kitchen Craftsmen.
