After the passing of dyn, the servant of 'd, ryedi the helper of dyn is
told to get up and cross the ocxi with l`xyi ipa. They will go to the land
that 'd is giving to them.

Notice that dyn is called by the beautiful title 'd car - By the end of
ryedis life he, too, will be called 'd car. What do these words
signify?
z
n iCa r dWn - Now it is ryedis turn to lead l`xyi ipa into l`xyi ux`.
l`xyi ipa must cross the ocxi to enter l`xyi ux`. Remember that the
previous generation of l`xyi ipa crossed a body of water through a
miracle. What will be the effect on l`xyi ipa and on the surrounding
nations of this next miraculous crossing of water?

When dyn had conquered the land of Sichon and Og on the east side of
the ocxi, these 2-1/2 mihay told him they wanted that land as their dlgp,
inheritance, because it was excellent pasture land for their sheep and
cattle.

They made an agreement with dyn that they would set up houses and
barns for their families and animals, and would cross the ocxi with the
rest of l`xyi ipa. In fact, they agreed to be the advance troops and would
not return to the east side of the ocxi until the land was conquered.

At this time, as l`xyi ipa are about to enter the land and begin fighting
the miprpk, ryedi reminds them of their commitment. They agree to lead
the nation in battle and to be loyal to ryedi. Actually they remained for
14 years, seven years of conquest and seven years of dividing the land
among the mihay.

ryedi send two men secretly to spy out egixi - the first city that l`xyi ipa
would conquer. They came to the house of Rachav, an innkeeper in the
city.

Do you remember that dyn send spies, milbxn, from the xacn to ux`
l`xyi? How many men did he send? What was their mission? What
was the end result?

The situation here is very different. ryedi send only two extremely
trustworthy men. l"fg tell us they are qgpt and alk. (Remember that
ryedi and alk were the only two of the original spies to bring back a
positive report.) Also these two spies were sent out very quietly. They
were supposed to gather information about the morale (feelings of
courage or lack of courage) of the people of egixi.

qgpt was the grandson of odkd oxd`. He had previously showed his
courage and loyalty to 'd.

Project Suggestions

1) Write a short skit about the people and events in this perek
2) You are the editor of a weekly newsletter that is circulated among ipa
l`xyi. Write a news article and a feature article about this perek.
Remember - news articles contain the facts; feature articles contain
background material, interesting additional information and some
opinion.
3) You are the editor of the Canaani Times, a newspaper published by
miprpk for miprpk. This issue is based on the wxt we just learned.
What suggestions do you have for your newspaper? Share with your
group and with the teacher, and then get started putting it together -
time is limited - l`xyi ipa are on the march!

The Edible Battle of HaAi .
Materials Needed:
Paper plates
Chocolate chips, cookies, pretzels, jelly bean, and other "edibles" that
strike your fancy
Instructions:
1. While the students are working with their "edible" model, the
teacher should be drawing the elements of the conquest and the
sequence on the board.
2. Give each student a paper plate and a selection of edibles that
represent each element in the strategy of conquering Ha'Ai.
3. Make two circles of chocolate chips, one larger to represent Ha'Ai
and one smaller to the southwest to represent Beit El
4. Use a larger cookie to represent the larger ambush group of 30,000
and a smaller cookie to represent the smaller ambush of 5,000 and
place them appropriately near the two cities.
5. Use pretzels or some other treat to represent the army of Bnei
Yisrael and place them to the north of Ha'Ai
6. Use another treat to represent the army of Ha'Ai and place within
that city
7. The above shows how all the elements were placed before the
battle began. Move the "Bnai Yisrael army" towards Ha'Ai
8. Turn the "Bnai Yisrael army" around to represent pretending to flee
from Ha'Ai
9. Move the "Ha'Ai army" to chase after Bnai Yisrael (out of Ha'Ai)
10. Move the large ambush into Ha'Ai.
11. Put red jellybeans in Ha'Ai to represent burning the city
12. Move the small ambush into Bet El File # B_01334
13. Turn Bnai Yisrael army around to face Ha'Ai and attack the army
of
Ha'Ai
14. Remove the Ha'Ai army and move the Bnai Yisrael army into
Ha'Ai. The plate now represents the conquest of the city.
15. Have the students repeat the demonstration and explain the steps
themselves. It might take a few repetitions. Then they can eat the
treats.
Variation:
Use craft items to represent the elements of the story instead of
edibles.
For example, use pom poms, beads, pipe cleaners, etc.
