Detailed Windows 2000 Installation Notes

Introduction
This document builds upon the information provided on the following Compaq Windows 2000 web site:
http://www.compaq.com/athome/win2000. Please review the material on this web site before continuing
with this document.

Some models of Presario Notebooks can be purchased with Windows Millennium Edition or Windows
2000 Professional preinstalled and configured on the hard drive. These preinstalled configurations have
been extensively tested and are therefore considered much more reliable, and are more easily supported,
than retail installations. In this case, a retail installation is where a customer purchased a system with
Windows Millennium preinstalled and then installed the retail version of Windows 2000 on the hard drive
at a later time. This document is to assist Presario Notebook customers who are considering or
performing a retail Windows 2000 installation on this model of Presario.

The document is divided into sections: Introduction, SoftPaq Installation Tips, Application Notes, and
Observed Anomalies. The Introduction section is what you are currently reading and explains the reason
and flow of this document. The SoftPaq Installation Tips section provides tips for installing the various
SoftPaqs posted on the Compaq web site for this Presario Notebook model. The Application Notes
section relates information for software programs provided as part of the Windows Millennium preinstalled
factory image on this Presario Notebook model. The Observed Anomalies section contains a list of
inconsistencies that we have encountered during testing of Windows 2000 on this Presario Notebook
model from behavior experienced with Windows Millennium. It is strongly recommended that you read this
entire document prior to making the decision to load Windows 2000 on your computer.

SoftPaq Installation Tips

The following information is provided to assist with the installation of Compaq released SoftPaqs for this
model of Presario Notebook. Each SoftPaq provides its own user installation instructions and assistance.
In addition, the recommended installation order for the SoftPaqs is:

1. Intel SpeedStep Utility

2. ATI Video Panel Detect Patch
3. ATI Video Driver
4. ESS Audio Driver
5. Synaptics Touchpad Driver
6. Easy Access Keyboard (4 Button) Driver
7. Conexant Modem Driver
8. Conexant NIC Driver (if NIC in system)
9. DVD Player Software

Notes:
o Some of the SoftPaqs will create a directory named sptemp during the installation. Please check for
and delete this directory before installing the next SoftPaq as it can interfere with subsequent SoftPaq
installations.

o There is also a System ROM BIOS Update available which addresses a few Windows 2000 unique
problems. This BIOS Update is listed with the other downloadable SoftPaqs on this Compaq web site.
However, the BIOS Update SoftPaq should be installed prior to the installation of Windows 2000 to
ensure that OS has available to it all the necessary system information for it to install and operate
properly.
