I have two questions related to the first task.
I’ve just done it and i don’t know if we have to change the name of the doc, i mean, i
dowloaded the task and i’ve done it in the same document, but i would like to know if you want me
to change the name of the document in order to help you to identify my task to the others.
The other question is if i have to change the extension or i leave it as a .doc. I understood from Elena
presentation that we have to follow the instruction carefully but i dont see anywhere specifications about
that. I can suppose if its a .doc you want me to leave it as a .doc, but i want to be sure.

Do not change the extension .doc. However, if you want, you can add your name to the document’s

Please, do not stress out. The first class will be on Friday, I have been confirmed today.
Fortunately, the first task isnt long. I know you have plenty of other tasks and things to do, I would
recommend to do other things first since you would only need to plan 2 hours maximum for this first task.

the examples between levels such as high b1 to low b2. Well listening to your virtual chat just now, you
said that every example has just 1 level only. Unfortunately I cannot resubmit the activity according to the
rules of UNIR. Well I just wanted to tell you now so that you know it was my mistake by doing my work to

Yesterday in class I mentioned that there are many different types of bilingualism. I also typed in the chat
the name of a book where you can find many definitions.
However, I said that I would also post it in the forum for everybody to see, just in case you want to have a
look at them.
Finally, I decided not to include it on the presentation to avoid confusion. This is NOT compulsory, it is
only an additional book that you can use for research if you want to continue investigating about this topic.

Please make sure that your 3 pages do not exceed the 1000 words. Do not worry if you have to write the
web/bibliography on a fourth page, but please make sure you follow APA rules.

Sure Dolores!
It is a weak form of bilingualism (submersion). Pull-out or withdrawal classes mean that some students are
separated from the big group (mainstream) to take support lessons in the L2.
In Spain we call them ’compensatoria’; It is the language support class where students from
minority groups learn the target language (majority language).

Once in the website, (http://tesolal.columbia.edu), you have to write the name and date of publication of the
article youre looking for. In this case, Schouten (2009).
There, youll find the article. I believe it is the last one in the search (look for its name then).
This reading is important for your research on this topic, you will have to read it to get important additional

Id say that if youre interested about selective mutism, do your task about it since it is going to be a lot
more rewarding for you. It is always best to research about something youre interested about, right?
Just follow the tasks description and objectives to do your essay and enjoy the process. Do not forget to
mention that there is not agreement on whether its a language/anxiety disorder :)

I cant tell you right now how many points you are going to get. However, as far as I know you were

Dear M Dolores,
Remember that all languages share a common underlying system and all human beings inherit a set of
principles that allow children to acquire mother tongue and other languages? This UG make that as human
beings we learn languages without being taught (as babies). Therefore, The appearance of language is not a
conscious process means that either you want or not, if you are surrounded by language (interaction)
eventually, you will gain that language unaware (unconsciously).

Further to our discussion in class today, I would like to ask advice and opinions about the use of textbooks
in the classroom, particularly English teaching. I know they are needed in content classes but in English
teaching their use tends to be frowned upon these days. I have worked in two bilingual schools and both do
not allow them. I was told that teachers would just follow the text and do nothing else in class. In short, I
guess they thought it made teachers lazy and students bored. Of course I know this happens, but to me a
well written textbook is better than teachers being expected to come up with their own materials. I have
seen teachers give great dynamic classes with all sorts of materials but I also see that in some cases, such
classes tend to lack continuity. Furthermore, I think at least a workbook is a must. I have seen a myriad of
great grammar exercises being done in classrooms but then anyone else can be doing those same exercises
in any grade they feel it is appropriate. These loose papers are sometimes tossed by students or end up in a
pile of folded papers in in a notebook pocket. Students then can’t review their work nor study for
tests.
I would very much like to know what your experience is with textbooks in the English classroom.

You dont have to write much (use a table format with bullet points). However, if you needed an extra page
I wont penalize for that if the information is clear. The main objective for me is that you get familiarized
with most methods.

Thank you for the response. I have invited my colleagues to chat but we have soooo many upcoming tasks!
Not sure how many of us will be contributing here.
Yes, I have had students who have commented that they wanted a text because it helped them to have
everything in one place which makes revision easier. As you commented, they also liked to know what was
coming next. However, I have also had groups that hated textbooks because they were too monotonous and
they felt if they had to do every exercise it was boring. Teens can be fickle though and I just had a group
complain that they hated doing all the exercises in their IELTS textbook (the only course where we got to
use a textbook) and when we stopped doing everything and started supplementing, they complained that
they bought the books for nothing!
I have only used textbooks for teaching English in an institute not at school and they were the usual ESL
ones like English File and Headway. I have seen some series for teens though with lots of project work (I
can’t remember the names now) which I found interesting for high school use. But yes, I can see that
many English texts are grammar based. When you say literacy approach (Sorry, if this is something I was
supposed to have come across on reading!) would that be something like the Whole Language Approach? I
used to teach English like this. It was great to use literature, respond to it with journals and other projects
and do the writing process. Students learned to use the language more naturally but we did find that
accuracy still suffered and wanted a text which I guess would be the same grammar based ones
you’re referring to (which were prohibited).
Speaking of accuracy, I have read that a problem with many students graduating from bilingual high schools
is production and I have seen this in the two schools I have worked at. I can only speak for my students
when I say that I would have loved to use a textbook for grammar, be it themed like ESL books mentioned
before or based on writing, just to see if their accuracy improved.

Hi Viviana,
In the online lessons I try to give you a more concrete idea on the topics that is worth studying. Last 16th of
December we had a revision lesson where I highlighted the most important aspects from units 1-4. Ill do
the same for units 5-8 in a couple/3 weeks. Have a look at the PPT I uploaded for that session and there you
have your referential doc ;)

Yes, the approaches that you mention (plus CLIL) are the ones that we are going to talk about during the
next sessions. Even though I will always try to give you some hints during lessons/review (about whats
more important to study), yes, those are the topics that you have to study.
The comparative table you have to do for task 4 can help you study all of them in an easier way.
Nevertheless, as compulsory, you only have to submit 2 approaches that are not in the same unit.
Being honest, your exam is not prepared yet, but I will probably ask about these approaches in the test or

I am about to start doing my task for this Unit 6. In Approaches and Methods in Language Teaching by Jack
C. Richards and Theodore S. Rodgers that we had to read for unit 6, a few pages were about earlier methods
for language teaching, but we should not include these in the task as in the objectives it says it is about the
methodologies emerged during the twentieth century, is that right? We would need to focus, of course, on
the Situational and Audiolingual approaches, but I see you mention that we have to mention at least 2 that
are not in the same unit? What does that mean? We have not seen approaches until this very unit, right? I
know that in the text by Richards and Rodgers they mention other approaches emerged in the last century
such as the Natural Approach or the Silent Way. Is that what you mean? Where do we get the information

Yes, the Oral Approach can also be named Situational Approach and Situational Language Teaching. All

I’m doing the task 4 about the comparative table and I have decided to compare all the language

I have a question about unit 2. It is the concept submersion. In your pdf it says that the first language is not
developed but replaced by the majority language, and in the test, it says that are programs where speakers of
two different languages share the same classroom and subjects are taught in two languages.
I don’t understand the concept. Do they have two teachers of different languages in the same
classroom? or maybe one day they are taught in L2 and other day in L1.

The book is just for your own research and reference. Since I am teaching another unit before this tasks
deadline, we decided in the last class that you should compare two approaches that are not in the same unir
(in this case units 6-7 if you do not want to include an approach I have not explained yet). You can get

You left this task in the Unit 6 where it is mentioned the Oral Approach and the Audiolingual Method as
methods and approaches of twentieth century. Now, in Unit 7 there are 3 methods more. (TPR, Silent way

I just watched the class (Unit 6) again to refresh my memory about those first two approaches, and I see that
at the end you said that if we submit only two approaches (even if they are from different units) we could
not get full score. You suggested to write 3 in one page and 3 in the other. I was planning to do that anyways
because it seems like a wonderful studying tool, but I want to know if you only plan to review two
approaches, if we send more, maybe I should just focus on those two and keep the others for my own study
in the future?

Dear Eva,
I just watched the class (Unit 6) again to refresh my memory about those first two approaches, and I see
that at the end you said that if we submit only two approaches (even if they are from different units) we
could not get full score. You suggested to write 3 in one page and 3 in the other. I was planning to do that
anyways because it seems like a wonderful studying tool, but I want to know if you only plan to review
two approaches, if we send more, maybe I should just focus on those two and keep the others for my own
study in the future?

So, Ive been thinking that the score could be as follows (if all items are correct) since there are 8
approaches in total:
- If you send 2 approaches, I will give you a full 7
- If you send three-score of 7.5
- If you send 4 - score of 8

- If you send 7 - 9.5
- If you send all 8 approaches - 10
This way I can be fair to all instructions given.

To be honest, I disagree with your decision on the 6 unit task.
I understand that some classmates think that it is better for us (students) have all the theories together in a
chart. I agree with them but I believe that due dates and assessment criteria are established for some specific
purpose. Two days before the due date the activity must not be changed although the due date has been
extended. Most of us are teachers and know what Im talking about.
Ive managed my time according to the schedule that was set the first dates of the course in order to carry
out all the proposal activities. I am really interested in this Master.
I am going to do the task with the new criteria. Just wanted to express my disagreement.

Your feedback is very much appreciated. I am sorry to read that you disagree with the decision since I have
done my best to help you with this task. As you said, due dates were established before we even started our
lessons. Since I created a bit of a misunderstanding, I extended the due date so everybody would be able to
do the task on time. Our job as teachers (myself included) is to be flexible to what happens in our classes
and groups.
In addition to this, I would appreciate that you read again the objective of the activity since it says very
clear: create a comparative chart that includes at least the context of each approach. This means that from
the very beginning, you were asked to compare all approaches and not only two. Thus, in my opinion,
giving a higher grade to those students comparing all approaches and going the extra mile it is the fairest
thing to do. Thank you for submitting your task with the new criteria.

you took the information from. Otherwise it is considered as plagiarism. I have included many ideas in your
essay to make it better next time...

The correct answer according to the corrector is D. Why not A?

Dear Asal,
Actually, the correct answer is A (PRESENTATION - PRACTICE - PRODUCTION).
When I check the answer, the correct option appears to be E: Answers A and D are correct and It is not
since D is missing the first part of the lesson in which the teachers presents the new language.
I will send the mistake to the gestor so they can change the answer for the future. Thank you!

You can do the tests as many times as you need, that is how you see which is the correct answer.

No, I would love everyone to do it. However, If you do not have the possibility to record yourself then, yes,
you have to do 3 things: table, PPT and voice.
BUT ONLY if you cannot record yourself in one class.

lesson and then I am going to edit the video inserting the relevant part into the sections. In total I will have
the minimum 10 minutes that you require. My class when I planned to do the lesson (today, Friday), was
used for a meeting with the principal so I had to change things up which means I need to edit.
Is this ok?

CBI and CLIL share many similarities (they both focus on content). In CBI 'Theme-based model: this model
uses specific themes or topics where the language is subordinated to the general theme. This can be taught
by a single teacher or by two teachers (language + content specialists) and they work all communicative
skills while the module is taught.'
The main difference is their approach:
CBI: two teachers working together, a language teacher and a content teacher
CLIL: requires just a teacher who is able to teach a given subject not in English but through English.
So, your last question its not exactly right :)

The table is in documents (where you download the PDFs from the virtual classes, also in the forum). I can
be both, a video (best option) or in your case (without students) a PPT with your recorded voice explaining
