Worksheet

Circle all the common nouns in the passage below.

You are eating all our food! cried Ricky Rat angrily.
You are taking over our home! shouted Tom Tiger.
It is just the same thing every day. When will all this noise end?
moaned Sally Squirrel sleepily. I hope to get a good nights sleep tonight.

Theyve been arguing for years, replied Sam Siamang.

How can we stop the argument? said Sally sadly. Sam Siamang scratched his
chin thoughfully. Hmm, maybe we can help them.

Sam Siamang suggested that Tom Tiger and Ricky Rat talk to the wise
Bamboo Rat. He was glad when both of them agreed.

Ricky Rat and Tom Tiger met each other in front of Bamboo Rats home.
Immediately, they started to quarrel. When Bamboo Rat came out to see what
the noise was, the two animals told him that they were arguing. Bamboo Rat said,
Calm down. Give me a few days. Ill find a sloution for both of you.

Bamboo Rat watched them. He saw that the tigers were great hunters,
but they did not like to hunt small animals. He also saw that the rats ate mostly
food from plants. Both lived in different places.

After several days, the tigers, rats and other animals came to hear the
Bamboo Rats decision.

The Selection of Innovation

Target Group : Year 4

Target Areas : Grammar Parts Common Nouns
Innovation : Vocarina
The innovation that I chose for this lesson is an adaptation version of Vocarina from
Pn. Rinamunirah binti Nasir, the developer of the method. She is an English teacher
in Kota Marudu, Sabah. I personally prefer teaching vocabularies using her method
because it can be varied according to the lesson suitability and can easily attract
pupils attention while learning English. In my case, I chose to use this method while
teaching grammar.
As mentioned above, the innovation that I chose for my lesson is focussing
on grammar part, specifically common nouns. The lesson is designed to teach Year 4
pupils on topic 14, Harmony in the Jungle. The versatility of Vocarina is what attracts
me the most to adapt it in my lesson. Based on what I learn on Vocarina, it can also
be adapted to teach other topics as it is not design specifically to teach only certain
parts of grammar. In fact, it can also be adapted to teach spelling, vocabularies,
reading activities and as part of listening and speaking activities too. The materials
required for the method are easy to be prepared and cost me almost nothing. As all
the materials can be printed, it can also be laminated for durability. Therefore, its
recyclabe features can help me in the future should I intend to include vocabulary-
related games in my classroom.
I planned to include Vocarina in my lesson because it promotes cooperation
among the pupils and also its easy administration while teaching in the classroom. In
fact, it helps me to organize my time management better rather than using other
grammar-related technique such as colour coding to highlight the use of common
nouns in the passage. Another reason is that, I noticed that almost every lesson
involving grammar seemed as dull and full of information for my pupils. They have to
cope up with the lesson eventhough they might not be able to master it. This applies
to my upper intermediate pupils as well. I also noticed that these group of pupils are
not having fun although they showed understanding by the end of the lesson.
Therefore, I chose this innovation to be adapted in my teaching with the hope that my
pupils can benefit from it and can have something to play around while learning
grammar.
