New Town Hall highlights what everybody loves about town

Mark Geller kept staring out the

Look at this, he said with a wide
smile. You look out, this is the Town
of Verona. This is what everybody
loves about the town.
Geller, the Town of Verona chair-
person, was walking around the new
6,200-square-foot Town Hall at 7669
County Hwy. PD, looking over the
farm fields and hills stretching for
miles to the south of the new build-
ing. Thats a little different from the
old site, which sat on Nine Mound
Road surrounded by houses on City
of Verona land.
But the view isnt all Geller smiles
about when it comes to the more than
$3 million set of new buildings the
Town Hall, a public works building
and a salt shed.
And, theres no debt, he said.
Thats pretty special.

than a year after selling 36 of the 43

Salem Church votes to
become open and affirming
Members of Salem United Church of
Christ recently voted to formally become an
Open and Affirming (ONA) congregation.
The ONA Covenant Statement reads: We
welcome and celebrate everyone, including
people of all ages, races, cultures, sexual ori-
entations, gender identities and expressions,
family configurations, economic circum-
stances, faith backgrounds and physical and
mental abilities.
Jon Pundt, a member of the churchs lead-
ership council, said the discussions and work
to become an ONA congregation began in
mid-2015 as a gradual acknowledgment that
we wanted to take more concrete and via-
ble steps to actively declare our welcome to
everyone.
In todays world of increasingly exclu-
sionary rhetoric, we are excited to be part
of a public statement that welcomes and

Center, where he works as
a guitar instructor.
DeJesus will play

composers, as well as
music by J.S. Bach, at
7p.m. Friday, Feb. 17.
The free recital, part of
the centers Faculty and
Friends Recital Series, is
open to the public and is
expected to last about one

According to Rhapsodys
website, DeJesus has
strong roots in classical
guitar, Brazilian jazz and
a variety of other styles,
and has performed as a
soloist with the Dubuque
Symphony Orchestra
and the Southern Illinois
Symphony. He holds a
masters degree in guitar
performance from Southern
Illinois University, and in

Ice Bears. The Metro Lynx
offense went cold in the

ting one shot on goal. The
Ice Bears on the other hand,
posted three goals on 12
shots, for a 6-4 victory.

Evelyn Norton
Evelyn May Norton,
age 90, of Verona, passed
away peacefully on Mon-
day, Feb. 6, 2017, at Four
Winds Lodge in Verona.
She was born on the
home farm near Paoli on
May 26, 1926, the daugh-
ter of the late Wells and
Grace (Haseltine) Himsel.
She graduated as valedic-
torian from Verona High

and Rodney Norton were
married and then moved
to Minneapolis, where she

lowship. They retired and
returned to Verona in 2006.
Evelyn always found
kindness in everyone, was
content in life and had a
bubbly laugh. She was a
wonderful storyteller and
historian, and enjoyed
making greeting cards for
others.
Evelyn is survived by

A week after the Plan
Commission spent over an
hour mostly complaining
about the number of apart-
ments in a pair of redevelop-
ments in and near the citys
downtown, the Common
Council had no such con-
cerns.
Granted, the larger of the
two was not on the council
agenda having been post-
poned by the Plan Commis-
sion for that reason, because
it wouldnt have gotten
enough votes to advance. But
alders were not only accept-
ing of the number of apart-
ments in a project planned
around the corner of West
Verona Avenue and Main
Street, they were welcoming.
I have a history of not
supporting (high-densi-
ty housing), but this is the
kind of thing that I think
wed want to have, said
District 1 Ald. Mac McGil-
vray. I dont have a prob-
lem with density in this case,
because thats where were
trying to get people, in the

height, there were concerns
about the aesthetics and there
were questions about the pro-
posed access road that would
replace Park Lane and about
traffic flow. But not one alder
complained about density,
which is about 40 units per
acre, more than triple the
citys standard limit.
Its a good case to make
an exception, said Ald. Scott
Stewart (D-2).

mas lights wont require

ages exceptions to be made
for mixed-use, downtown or
senior projects, which fit the
plan alders reviewed Mon-
day.
The Sugar Creek Com-
mons plan, which was post-
poned for further discussion
at the Plan Commission, is
on the fringes of what city
staff and leaders typically
consider downtown.
Both projects have or are
expected to request tax-in-
crement financing.

ant features of the new
Town Hall will be the
chance to find a little priva-
cy.
At the old place, its actu-
ally impossible to have a
private conversation, Geller
said, standing in a board
room attached to both the
offices and the community
space. Just having a board
room like this is nice.
He added that the bene-
fit will be for everyone, as
staff members can invite
residents with an issue in
there and the Town Board
can use it for a closed ses-
sion while attendees stay in
the main room. In the past,
those in attendance had to
more or less leave the build-
ing for the board to hold a
closed-session discussion.
