Gender blind Disaggregates by Gender Gender
sex Responsive tranformative

A scale was developed to value each document regarding the level of gender
mainstreaming1 of the documented experience or research. The scaling is based on
the information recorded in the document, which might be diferent from the
experience reported on.

Level 1: Gender blind

The term gender blind refers to research and intervention experiences that are
designed without any gender analysis. Documents refer to technical aspects of crop
and agricultural practices. Sometimes documents only refer to producers or
actors, as if they were a homogenous group, and not the key actors of any
postharvest system.

Level 2: Sex- disaggregated

1 The scale is partially based on Gender Integration Continuum developed by IGWG (Interagencial
Gender Working Group).

2
The documents scaled as level 2 describe experiences that record some sex-
disaggregated data on roles, responsibilities and decision-making in postharvest
systems, without focusing on how these gender relations afect outcomes of RTB
innovations. Intervention may focus male and/or women groups, but without
responding to gender related constraints.

Level 3: Gender aware- Gender Responsive

In contrast, gender aware documents deliberately examine the roles,
responsibilities, rights, and power relations of men and women in RTB framework
system and the gender-related barriers to RTB innovation. Specifc interventions are
designed so to assure these are addressed and desired program objectives are
achieved. There is no specifc focus on reducing gender inequality or address the
gender systems that contributes to the inequalities.

Level 4: Gender aware Gender transformative2

These documents report gender aware interventions where specifc strategies are
designed and/or implemented that seek to transform gender relations and to promote
equality.
