to develop a downtown
civic campus in Middleton

Planning director Eileen Kel-
ley last week presented the con-
cept of a civic campus at a joint
meeting between the common
council and plan commission.
She said the purpose of the
presentation was to give a heads
up regarding a proposal she is
working on that will be intro-
duced in a few months to direct
city staff to determine the scope
of work for developing a civic
campus and what steps would
need to be taken.
Kelley described the concept
of a civic campus as a mixed-
use development with one or
more government or civic
buildings. There are no clear
plans at this point but theres
been discussion of rebuilding
and combining the city hall and

age of 95.
She was
born June
22, 1921 in
the Town of Berry, grew up near
Marxville on a dairy farm with
four brothers, lived through the
Great Depression, married a
local man Harland Danz in
1942, and traveled with him
throughout the U.S. during his
early Army years.
When WWII was declared
and Harland went to Europe,
she worked to support the
cause. After VE, they settled in
Middleton and raised two sons.
Ann worked as a supper club
waitress, then was hired by
Herb Kohl as a deli manager in
one of his first stores. Following
many years in Middleton, after
retirement they lived in Fitch-
burg, then moved to Delavan to
be closer to immediate family.
She was always called Aunt
Netty, Ann, or Anetta. She spent
many years sacrificing to help
Harland with health issues. She
loved spending time with her

Middleton in 2003 and has
grown to 688 since. Company
president Richard Titus says he
projects the company will have
800 employees at the site by
2022.
The TIF agreement obligates
the company to maintain at least
625 employees in Middleton for
the life of the agreement. TIF
eligible costs for the project fall

and southeast Wisconsin.
Anetta was pre-deceased by
husband Harland, four brothers,
nine sisters/brothers-in-law, and
two great grandsons. She is sur-
vived by sons Dennis and
David, seven grandchildren, 13
great grandchildren, and two
great-great grandchildren and
also numerous family members,
many from the Marxville, Ma-
zomanie, and Black Earth areas,
and southeast Wisconsin, in-
cluding family names Danz,
Walser, Olsen, Matz, Garfoot,
Turk, Hering, Meyers, Schu-
man, Grob, Santfleben, Pfister,
Disrud, DiRienzo, Fosshage,
Ransden, Hupke, Reed, and
more.
No funeral will be held at this
time. There will be a memo-
rial/celebration of life during
this forthcoming summer/fall. A

by his loving family at his fa-
vorite winter home in Cape
Coral, FL. Ron was born on
February 13, 1933 to Theodore
and Grace (Backer) Thomas in
Dayton Township, Butler
County, Greene, Iowa.
After high school he joined
the U.S. Navy in 1950 and was
a Veteran of the Korean War
serving on the U.S.S. Suther-
land DDR743; a Destroyer, ad-
vancing in rank to Petty Officer
First Class in under three and a
half years. While still in the
service he married Marvilyn
Joan Tolliver on October 8,

nologies Corporation, receiving
many marketing and engineer-
ing awards from his company
up until his retirement on Janu-
ary 1, 1998. Following his re-
tirement he was president of the
Zenas Corporation, a consulting
engineering firm.
He was a registered Profes-
sional Engineer and Past Presi-
dent of the Madison Chapter of
the American Society of Heat-
ing, Refrigerating and Air Con-
ditioning Engineers (ASHRAE)
and also served many terms on
the board of governors. He was
active in the design and con-
struction of many large building
HVAC and plant projects in the
state of Wisconsin. He was a
life member of the National So-

car charging stations, a bike
shelter and a community gar-

ETC is also requesting that
the city create a bus stop shelter
and turn lane in front of the site
at an estimated cost of
$90,000.
ETC estimates the addition

zomanie, WI, Theresa Thomas
of Hartland, WI; seven grand-
children, Jessica, Jeffrey, Gar-
rett, Dana, Logan, Taylor and
Cooper; one great granddaugh-
ter, Madison Thomas of San
Diego, CA; Brother, Darrell
Thomas of Sioux City, IA; two

In December 2007, several of
my neighbors and friends asked
me to represent them on the city
council. I won the election eas-
ily. I have represented District 2
for almost nine years. I am cur-
rently Chair of the Commission
on youth; Vice-President of the
Middleton Area Development
Corporation; and a member of
the Pedestrian, Bike and Transit
Committee and the Middleton
Airport Commission. In the
past, I have served as City
Council President Pro-Tem,
Chair of the EMS Commission
and a member of the Library
Board. I helped get the Sustain-
ability Committee started in
2008 and served as Chair. In
2005, Mayor Doug Zwank ap-
pointed me to the Conservation
Lands Commission and on
which I served for many years.
Bio:
Middleton resident since
1982, married 40 years, chil-
dren attended MCPASD
schools. I have a Ph.D. (Genet-
ics) from the Univ. of Califor-
nia-Riverside and M.S and B.S.
degrees from India. Retired
Senior Research Scientist after
21 years of research and devel-
opment in plant biotechnology,
with Agracetus/ Monsanto in
Middleton. I have worked at
universities in India, Germany
and the United States.
For 30 years, I volunteered
for Middleton schools, Boy
Scouts, Cub Scouts, Middleton
Outreach Ministry, United Way,
Middleton Good Neighbor Fes-
tival, Kiwanis, Friends of Kettle
Ponds, Friends of Pheasant
Branch Conservancy and Soc-
cer Clubs. I served as Middleton
Kiwanis President (97-98), past
Governor and Trustee of Kiwa-
nis Wisconsin-Upper Michigan
District. I started the Middleton

Why are Brar
you running
for mayor?
I am running to serve the
community I love. I will work
to fix our roads and keep our
taxes affordable. Utilizing my
science and technology back-
ground, experience of working
in public and private sector, I
will work to attract high tech-
nology companies to locate
here. Using my long term com-
munity work experience, I will
encourage and engage newer
and younger citizens to become
involved in city government.
My passion is to serve people.
Please list the three most
important issues the city will
face during the upcoming
mayoral term:
1. The need to fix deteriorat-
ing roads and infrastructure and
to establish long-term mainte-
nance plans to keep them in
good condition.
2. Providing quality services
when the city approaches a rev-
enue cap. Maintaining low
property taxes which will help
citizens and assist in fostering
new economic development.
3. Maintaining and enhanc-
ing our excellent parks, ponds
and nature conservancies.
Tell us about your best ac-
complishment while serving in
local city politics:
Helping get the Sustainability
Committee started and imple-
menting popular programs mo-
tivated me to work with the City
council and the CLC director.
We procured city funding and a
Dane County Parks Commis-
sion matching grant to build de-
tention ponds at the West end of
Tiedeman pond and to raise the
trail around the Pond. Detention
ponds help clean water with
MIDDLETON TIMES-TRIBUNE
sedimentation before it goes to
the pond. Raised trails do not
get flooded and are usable at all
times. It is also now accessible
to all of our Special Needs citi-
zens.
Please provide an example
of a time you worked with a
political adversary to reach a
reasonable compromise:
Middleton Street south of
South Avenue was first built
~1969 and was badly deterio-
rated. Getting funding to build
this street took years of work
and many compromises with
city Alders who wanted to pri-
oritize other project first. It is
now an excellent street serving
that neighborhood.
What are your views on the
following issues:
Tax Increment Financing
(TIF):
TIF is an excellent tool to en-
able developments which may
not happen without this assis-
tance. My preference is for de-
veloper-financed TIF, where the
developer takes on the debt to
be paid by the taxes collected
from that development, rather
than the city financed TIF. Mid-
dleton has used it very effec-
tively in Tax Incremental
District 3. I believe that Middle-
ton should have enforceable
guidelines for the use of TIF.
TIF, to begin with, was de-
signed to clean up the blighted
areas. However, now TIF is
used for just about anything.
Development:
Developments are the life
and blood of any city. Knowing
small businesses provide over
2/3rd of the jobs we should en-
courage their establishment. My
first preference is for develop-
ments on areas within the city
(infill). Developments should
follow our long term master
plans. Middleton should try to
attract new and emerging tech-
nology companies, which will
provide jobs for generations to
come.
Environmental initiatives:
Our citizens love our quality
of life and resources. I will sup-
port the programs of our Sus-
tainability Committee and
pledge to work with other envi-
ronment friendly groups to im-
prove our environment.
City involvement with other
branches and levels of govern-
ment (for instance, passing res-
olutions on county, state or
federal issues):
We should continue to coop-
erate and coordinate with other
levels of government to help
each other and avoid redun-
dancy.
Affordable/workforce hous-
ing:
Affordable housing is a
county-wide challenge. Middle-
ton has taken a lead in enabling
people to work and afford to
live here. As Mayor I will work
to support and strengthen our
affordable housing programs.

Why are you running for
mayor?
Im running for mayor so that
residents, businesses, and City
staff have a leader that they can
trust knowing that the policy
decisions being made will have
a lasting positive effect on the
community. In my answers
below youll see my use of the
term we far more that I, this
is because it takes all of us: res-
idents, business leaders, City
Council and staff working to-
gether for any of this to be con-
sidered an accomplishment.
Please list the three most
important issues the city will
face during the upcoming
mayoral term:
1. Operating within the levy
cap while continuing to provide
the high quality city services
residents deserve.
2. Sourcing new revenue to
expand services to meet the de-
sires of residents.
3. Closing the housing gap
that exists with Middleton. In
addition, the recent past has
seen a number of retirements at
City Hall. Weve replaced a lot
of institutional knowledge with
employees who we feel are the
most qualified individuals to
carry on our policy goals and
objectives. Weve restructured
our Administration, but in addi-
tion it will take a great effort by
all of us to make sure we stay
on course, all working together
to keep Middleton a great place
to live and work.
Tell us about your best ac-
complishment while serving
in local city politics:
My most effective accom-
plishment during the past 10
years was my ability to per-
suade the opinion of the Coun-
cil so that we should not allow
a subdivision on the western
edge of the City to be served by
well water and septic systems.
We were facing a very difficult
budget, and the added tax base
proposed for this development
was very desirable. The project

staff, how-
ever over
time and a
lot of hard Hilbert
work I was
able to demonstrate that this de-
velopment was not the right di-
rection for the City. Im very
proud of the stormwater utility

In Middleton, policy starts
developing around the table of
our various committees. At this
level, a lot of compromise takes
place to make sure the best rec-
ommendations move forward.
Compromise can becomes dif-
ficult when the adversary does-
nt have a seat at the table such

Tax Increment Financing:
TIF is our number one tool
for generating economic devel-
opment as well as implementing
the objectives of our compre-
hensive plan that do not have a
dedicated funding source. TIF
protects us from both sprawl
and becoming a bedroom com-
munity. We need to be careful to
not take advantage of TIF fund-
ing for projects that do not gen-
erate increment, so that when
we close TIF #3 in 2029, mil-
lions of dollars will be available
to our TIF partners: the school
district, the technical college,
and the County.
Development:
Infill development and sus-
tainable development are a very
important part of my long range
goals to maintain a balanced tax
base and protect property own-
ers from increases in taxes or
decreases in property value. Ill
work to attract development
that creates quality jobs and
supports the local economy.
Environmental initiatives:
We need to continue to work
inside and outside our borders
to improve our ground and sur-
face water quality. Ill introduce
an initiative to secure critical
groundwater recharge areas that
feed Pheasant Branch.
City involvement with other
branches and levels of govern-
ment (for instance, passing res-
olutions on county, state or
federal issues):
The Mayors and Councils
role is to put in place policy,
sometimes that ability is limited
and the most we can do is send
a message. Other times we can
help to extend the reach of a cit-
izen group such as the Citizens

Affordable/workforce hous-
ing:
There are jobs in Middleton
that do not generate enough in-
come for the employee to live in
Middleton. This is the housing

For starters, tell us about your-
self:
Jason Compton: Im a 13-
year resident of Middleton, and
a producer for Madison Shake-
speare Company.
MTT: Can you tell us a bit
about the founding of Madison
Shakespeare Company? Has
the experience matched expec-
tations so far?
Compton: Madison Shake-
speare Company was started in
2011 by John Varda, Warren
Hansen, and Steve Cover to
present affordable, high-quality
theater classics in Dane County.
MSC staged Julius Caesar in
2012 and Antony and Cleopatra
in 2013, but then went dormant.
Our initial performing space,
Breese Stevens Field, was an in-
teresting venue and a lot of fun
to play, but very expensive. And
not very intimate. During this
time I appeared in supporting
roles in both productions.
MSC went dormant as a pro-
ducing organization after
Antony and Cleopatra. There
were a couple of attempts to
stage Romeo and Juliet, which
eventually led to a collaboration
with Madison College, where
the MATC theater department
produced a script adapted by
John Varda. But it didnt look
like MSC was actually going to
put on any full stage produc-
tions any time soon. That all
changed practically overnight.
In summer 2015, I was sup-
posed to be a cast member and
assistant director in a produc-
tion of a contemporary political
play, Scenes From an Execu-
tion. It was going to be directed
by Christopher William Wolter,
who I had just served as assis-
tant director for in the produc-
tion of Death of a Salesman for
Strollers.
There was just one problem
with Scenes From an Execu-
tionwe couldnt find a suit-
able lead actress for the play.
After searching for weeks,
Christopher decided to pull the
plug and cancel the production.
I was seriously disappointed,
because I really wanted to work
with the cast and crew we had
assembled, and I wanted to
have a summer theater project.
Summer is a relatively quiet
time for straight theater (that is,
not musicals) around here,
and what little was going on had
already selected casts.
I missed doing Shakespeare
ability to endure them). King

Julius Caesar and A&C with
Madison Shakespeare, then
Troilus and Cressida in 2014
with Fermats Last Theater. So
I said, Well, it sucks that
Scenes From an Execution was
canceled, but the hell with it,
Im definitely going to do some
Shakespeare this summer!
That would only happen if I put
the show together, so I did. I
started reaching out to people,
including former castmates and
people who were also planning
to be in Scenes From an Execu-
tion, and we assembled an
eight-person group of actor/di-
rectors with the idea of putting
together a collection of short
scenes from Shakespeare.
That show was the first An
Evenings Affair, and it was one
of the most exhilarating experi-
ences Ive had in theater. Con-
sidering that I was asking
people to join me to stage
Shakespearean scenes I hadnt
selected yet, for a show that did-
nt have a name, and didnt
have a theater company behind
it at first, it was amazing how
quickly the other seven people
said yes to me. We had just 31
days between the first table read
with the actor/directors and
opening night, and we got seven
scenes up and running and look-
ing really good.
Once we started working on
it, it became clear that it would
be the perfect project to restart
Madison Shakespeare Com-
pany as an active organization,
so we got permission to use the
name. And so MSC was up and
running again.
Since that first feverish rush
to put An Evenings Affair to-
gether, weve produced a sec-
ond Affair show with even more
scenes, plus The Tragedy of
Macbeth, plus special perform-
ances including at the Chazen
Museum of Art to support the
visit of the Shakespeare First
Folio, and at the Madison Chil-
drens Museum and American
Players Theatre to help com-
memorate the 400th anniversary
of Shakespeares death.
Now were putting on our
first full-length winter produc-
tion. For a theater company that
started with the idea of doing
one outdoor summer show per
year, were doing a lot more be-
sides. So it was a long and
winding road to get here
MTT: I find it almost eerie
how modern so many of the
great plays are. Not in a super-
ficial way, but in expressing
the universality of our prob-
lems (and sometimes even our
Lear is like that. I read
Chekhovs Three Sisters ear-
lier this week, and I thought it
easily could have been written
in 2017. And of course,
Richard II: Can you tell us
how this play speaks to us,
today?
Compton: Richard the Sec-
ond obviously isnt about elec-
tions and popular votes and
electoral colleges because those
things didnt exist the way we
think of them today. But it is
about questions like:
Just how subject to their own
laws are our leaders? When
Richard runs short of money to
pay for war and doesnt feel he
has enough political cover to
raise taxes and fees any higher,
he decides to cover the gap by
seizing the estate of John of
Gaunt, one of Englands
wealthiest men. Gaunts heir,
Henry Bolingbroke, was conve-
niently exiled by Richard before
Gaunt died, so Henry isnt even
around to challenge Richard in
court. Its a case of some seri-
ously shady executive orders,
one might say.
What happens to leaders and
political aspirants after they
lose, or are forced to leave of-
fice, whether its because of
term limits or some other exter-
nal pressure? Sometimes they
hang around and make docu-
mentaries or build houses or
start PACs, but they often fade
into the background because
they dont really have a place
anymore. Its hard to know
what to do around someone
who *used* to be venerated but
now has no real status. Richard
resigns the crown and in theory
thats enough, but nobody really
knows what to do with him after
that. So he gets bounced around
in a weird exile/prison situation.
Alive, hes an embarrassment
and an awkward reminder of
how things went wrong. Dead,
hes still an awkward embar-
rassment because *that was a
king that just got killed, man*.
(Remember how weird it was
when Nixon was still alive? Re-
member how weird it was when
he died?)
How much do regular people
really benefit when you throw
the bums out? Bolingbrokes
political cover for invading
England and forcing Richard to
resign is that he was getting rid
of a king who broke fundamen-
tal laws and lost the trust of the
people. But it turns out that Bol-
ingbroke hangs on to power
by breaking a bunch of fun-
damental laws and murdering
people. Oops!
MTT: I think we might have
covered this last time, but I
want to remind our readers
how accessible Shakespeare
really is. (Im an imbecile, for
example, and even I can enjoy
his work.) Seriously, how
much of a barrier is the men-
tality that its going to be dif-
ficult to understand or follow
a show?
Compton: One of the cool
things about Richard the Sec-
ond is that it opens in a very
modern fashion. The play opens
with Richard and Bolingbroke,
the two chief rivals of the story,
in a serious situation. Every-
thing thats happening in the
first scene is important, and its
not couched in puns and word-
play. Youre seeing Richard
under the gun, having to ma-
neuver his way through a seri-
ous situation with a lot of
different pressures. Its a lot like
what youd get back from a
modern screenwriter if you
asked them to tell this tale.
From the opening gun, were
focused on the people who do
the moving and the shaking.
Its also worth saying that we
do understand that Shakespeare
Anxiety affects some people,
and that we do take some of the
chief causes into account when
adapting our scripts and decid-
ing how to present a show.
Theres no way to cure every-
bodys Shakespeare Anxiety but
there are some things we can do
to avoid actively confusing
even those people who come in
totally chill and ready.
For starters: Shakespeares
plays typically have many,
many more characters in them
than a modern play. We will
often fold characters together to
improve clarity, which helps a
bit. But even after doing that,
often Shakespeares writing cre-
ates what I call the Sir Not-Ap-
pearing-In-This-Film problem
(based on a Monty Python
joke.) Basically, it involves
characters who talk about peo-
ple, by name, who never actu-
ally appear in the play. In many
cases, those characters might be
people that Shakespeares orig-
inal audience would have
known by name, either because
they were important figures of
the day, or well-known histori-
cal figures, or canonical heroes
and villains. (Think of saying
If only Tony Stark would come
and pick up the dinner check in
some movie Iron Man isnt ac-
tually in. A ton of people now
know that Tony Stark is a fic-
tional billionaire, so if you
name-drop him, it doesnt hurt
anything.)
But we dont want our audi-
ences to have to sit there and
say, Wait, who? while theyre
also trying to enjoy the experi-
ence of the play. So, whenever
possible, Sir Not-Appearing-In-
This-Film is not mentioned.
Theres another special layer
when staging a history, which
Richard the Second is. For
Shakespeares contemporary
audience, King Richard the
Seconds reign happened about
200 years before they were see-
ing the play. Lots of people in
Shakespeares contemporary
audience, and even a modern
British audience, will have
heard of at least some of the
characters and events, because
it was part of their nations his-
tory. Its like Hamilton. Lots of
people are at least passingly fa-
miliar with Hamilton because
theyve looked at a $10 bill.
Maybe they remember the milk
commercial about the Hamil-
ton/Burr duel. Whatever. Its
part of our cultural heritage and
history, of 200 years ago, give
or take.
So we want to be aware of
facts, innuendos, and character
relationships that a British audi-
ence, especially circa 1600,
would have probably known
and understood, but which no-
body in Dane County could par-
ticularly be expected to know.
And if theres a detail or two
which is so super-extra impor-
tant that being without it might
seriously affect your compre-
hension of the play, we need to
close that gap somehow.
In Richard the Second, the
hugely important fact is the
backstory of the Duke of
Gloucester. In history, he was a
prominent lord who repeatedly
stood in opposition to the king
and at times seriously under-
mined Richards power and au-
thority. Its generally
understood that while Glouces-
ter was in prison awaiting trial,
Richard had him killed. This
upset a lot of people, including
but not limited to Gloucesters
relatives, including John of
Gaunt and the Duke of York.
Its used against Richard for
leverage, and eventually the
same exact things happens *to*
Richard.
Thats all pretty important
stuff, because it gets mentioned
a fair amount in the play. But
when the play starts, Gloucester
is already dead. But its also
*really important* to under-
stand who he was and why its
important that he was killed, be-
cause it motivates so much of
the action.
At Broom Street Theater,
where we will perform Richard,
its customary to address the au-
dience before the play begins.
So were going to take advan-
tage of that fact and use that
time to establish who Glouces-
ter is, and why hes important,
in a way that should fit the flow
of the performance. (Theres
also some pre-show activity that
expresses the Gloucester death,
and whos responsible.)
MTT: Can you tell us a bit
about your dual roles - that of
producer and performer?
Compton: Producer is an ex-
tremely unsexy role. The best
way to describe it is being the
person responsible for either
finding what needs to be found,
or finding someone else to do it.
My current task is to find the
Platonic ideal of a cafe chair
to serve as a symbolic throne
for Richardand to do so on a
reasonable budget. I have sent
dozens of pictures of chairs to
Christopher, hoping he will say,
Yes, please buy that chair. As
of this conversation, that hasnt
happened yet.
I work closely with Christo-
pher and his assistant director
Dijana Mitrovic on props and
costume needs, and try to be
available to answer Yes we can
do that / no we cant type ques-
tions whenever theres a cre-
ative flight of fancy.
Being an actor in the show
does mean that I have an addi-
tional set of responsibilities for
the on-stage presentation as
well. Ive been producing and
performing in all of MSCs
shows in this modern era so
that part of the challenge is fa-
miliar enough.
As the producer for Madison
Shakespeare, I also work with
the artistic director, Francisco
Torres, to select future plays.
(When I suggested Richard last
summer, I had no idea how rel-
evant it was going to become.)
Q: Anything else?
Compton: I asked Christo-
pher to direct this play not only
because I was eager to work
with him again after the Death
of a Salesman experience and
the aborted Scenes From an Ex-
ecution attempt, but also be-
cause the cancellation of Scenes
led to the resuscitation of Madi-
son Shakespeare Company.
Christopher is very passionate
about politically charged mate-
rial and I knew it would be a
good fit, but I also liked the idea
of closing the loop on his inad-
vertent contribution to getting
us back up and running as an or-
ganization.

The greatest season in the
history of Middletons boys
swimming program came in
2000, when the Cardinals fin-
ished second at state.
Perhaps the 2017 Cardinals
can give that group a run.
Middleton finished second
at its own sectional last
Saturday giving the Cardinals a
great deal of hope and opti-
mism heading to this
Saturdays WIAA Division 1
state meet.
Traditionally, the Middleton
Sectional has a collection of
the states top teams and swim-
mers. So if the Cardinals can
shine there, quite often they
can also excel at state.
Madison West won the sec-
tional with 366.5 points, while
Middleton (320), Madison
Memorial (315.5), Sauk
Prairie-Wisconsin Heights
(257.5) and Verona-Mount
Horeb (211) rounded out the
top five.
Some of the swims were a
little flat compared to how we
did last weekend, Middleton
coach Danny Lynam said. But
it can be difficult to continue to
get faster after some of the
larger time drops we had last
weekend.
The most exciting part
about the state team this year is
of the nine guys we had qualify
in individual swims, five are

and Lamers were second in the
200-yard medley relay. That
group is now seeded second at
state.
Our entire 200 medley
relay swam wonderfully,
Lynam said. It was an perfect

And Middletons 200-yard
freestyle relay team of Kunsch,
senior Max Hollfelder,
McGovern and Draves was
fourth. That foursome is now
seeded 13th at state.
Draves also won the 200-
yard freestyle and the 500-yard
freestyle. He is now seeded
second in both events at state.
Michael Draves had a great
meet all around, Lynam said.
His 200 and 500 free are start-
ing to get towards the times we
were aiming for, and he had an
amazing 100 free on the last leg
of the 4x100 relay.
Sophomore Archer Parkin
was third in the 100-yard back-
stroke, while Lamers was ninth
and senior Erick Grelle was
10th. Parkin is seeded ninth at

Tyree Eady looked around

Tuesday night and saw what
qualifies as glitterati for a high
school basketball game.
There were college coaches
from Marquette and Iowa in
the stands. There were a pair of
standouts from Marquette, and
several players from Big Eight
Conference rivals Madison
Memorial and Sun Prairie.
Eady, Middletons sensa-
tional senior forward, realized
this was the perfect time to
make a statement.
Coach has been telling us
that now is Go Time! Eady
said. And we kind of wanted
to make a statement to the rest
of the state that were still
here.
Oh, the Cardinals are here
all right. And they might not be
going anywhere for a while.
Middleton played arguably
its finest game of Kevin
Baverys 11-year tenure and
routed Stevens Point the
two-time WIAA Division 1
defending state champion
96-66.
Eady had a terrific game
with 26 points and 10
rebounds, while senior guard
Storm Murphy had 15 of his 19
points in the second half.
Senior guard C.J. Fermanich
added 12 points, while senior
reserve forward Ben Jackson
added 11 points.
Cardinals crush

Kevin Bavery knows hell
have his work cut out for him.
Bavery, Middletons boys
basketball coach, will head to
his postseason seeding meeting
this weekend knowing that par-
ticular battle will be every bit
as intense as some combats on
the court.
Middletons 18-team sec-
tional includes all 10 Big Eight
schools, Classic 8 Conference
heavyweights Muskego and
Mukwonago, and Little Ten
Conference stalwarts
Oconomowoc and Watertown.
My gut is if we play well
this week, well be a No. 3
(seed), Bavery said. As long
as were top-4, it really doesnt
matter. Then we get to host
twice in regional play.
Middleton appears to be
peaking as the postseason
nears.
The Cardinals won a pair of
games last week and pushed
their winning streak to five.

When we push the ball and
when we share the ball, we can
be really good, said Bavery,
whose team won its sixth
straight game and improved to
16-4. We did all of those
things tonight.
Since the start of the 2012-
13 season, the Pointers were
116-9 (.928) overall, including
16-3 this year. In that time,
Point had allowed 70 points, or
more, in just six of those 125
games (4.8%).
Records on Stevens Point
date back to the 2002-03 sea-
son. And Middletons 96 points
were the most scored against
the Pointers in that time.
We just showed that we
can play with anybody, said
Fermanich, who is first cousins
with Hauser and earned brag-

Middleton improved to 15-4
overall and 12-4 in the Big
Eight Conference. That has the
Cardinals alone in third place
in the league, one game behind
co-leaders Madison Memorial
and Sun Prairie (13-3).
Middletons plan of attack
against Parker was simple.
Dont mess around,
Bavery said.
Middleton defeated the
Vikings, 96-29, on Dec. 22.
And the Cardinals didnt want
to let Parker hang around this
time either.
Youre not looking to
repeat that (first game), but you
do want to establish your pres-
ence right away against a
young opponent who has
improved, Bavery said. And
we certainly did that.
We didnt want Parker to Fermanich and Eady added 16
hang around and gain some life
because we werent respecting
them, as well as taking our own
game serious.
The Cardinals took the
Vikings plenty serious and ran
them out of the gym. In fact,
Middleton made a school-
record 17 three pointers in just

ging rights for the time being.
They have a great coach, great
players, obviously ranked very
high.
We think we can be up
there with those guys, and I
hope this shows that we can
give anybody in the state a
good dogfight.
The Cardinals showed
exactly that on both ends of the
floor.
Middleton shot a whopping
34-of-62 from the floor
(54.8%) and made 13-of-25
three-pointers (52.0%). The
Cardinals even made a blister-
ing 13-of-14 free throws
(92.9%).
On the other end, Eady &
Co. did all they could to slow
the 6-foot-8 Hauser. And while
Hauser shot 11-of-19 from the
floor (57.9%), his teammates
32 attempts, shooting a blister-
ing 53.1% from behind the arc.
Middleton raced to an 11-2
lead and stretched that to 48-19
by halftime. Tyree Eady, who
led the Cardinals with 24
points, had 18 of those in the
first half.
We ran the floor hard,
closed our traps, got good open
looks in rhythm, hit the offen-
sive boards hard and really
shared the ball, Bavery said.
The second half was more
of the same.
Storm Murphy had 12 of his
20 points in the second half and
junior forward Brogan Brunker
added 11 points.
In all, 12 Cardinals scored
as Middleton had 15 fast break
points and 26 points off of
turnovers.
Middleton then cruised past
Madison La Follette, as well.
Murphy led the Cardinals
with 19 points, while both C.J.
points.
Middleton raced to a 39-16
lead and was never threatened
in the second half.
I really liked how we com-
peted, Bavery said. Ben
Jackson beat people to the floor
to keep loose balls alive and
then in to our favor, Fermanich
combined to go just 12-of-38
(31.6%).
Honestly, we haven't lived
up to the expectations that we
want to for this year, Eady
said. But, I mean beating the
defending state champs by 30
points is obviously a statement.
We wanted to prove that were
still as good as advertised.
Mission accomplished.
Middleton used an early 10-
0 run to grab a 16-7 lead.
Fermanich and Myron Ashford
both made two free throws to
start the run, then Eady and
Davis Roquet both drilled
three-pointers.
Middletons lead was 27-18
with 6 minutes left in the first
half when the Cardinals
smacked the Pointers with an
8-0 burst to firmly gain control.

continued his stellar defensive
effort in the press with timely
traps.
Murphy continued to push
and distribute the ball, and
Eady just flat out gets to the
rim
then Eady had an old-fashioned
three-point play and knocked
down a 22-footer as
Middletons lead ballooned to
35-18.
While many eyes were on
the highly-touted Hauser all
night, Eady was every bit the
big mans equal.
I kind of wanted to show
my dominance, Eady said. I
saw Memorial and Sun Prairie
over in the stands, so I kind of
wanted to go out there and
show them that were still here.
Memorial and Sun Prairie
are obviously at the top of the
(Big Eight Conference) stand-
ings right now. But were still
working and were going to get
there.
Hauser, who entered the
night averaging 21.2 points per
game, and Pointers sharp-
shooter Drew Blair (19.9) both
picked up two early fouls.
Stevens Point then switched to
a 2-3 zone defense to protect
their two stars and Middleton
picked it apart.
The Cardinals shot 7-of-14
from three-point range in the
first half (50.0%) and 15-of-33
overall (45.5%). Stevens Point
shot just 9-of-25 (36.0%) in the
half and went 0-of-8 from
three-point range.
When we play with no fear,
dont back down to anybody,
just have that mentality, we can
be really good, Bavery said.
The Pointers crept within
58-43 with 13:44 left in the
game and appeared poised to
make things interesting. But
Middleton erupted on a 14-1
run over a 4 minute stretch
and built a commanding 72-44
lead.

Murphy started the run with
five consecutive points and
junior guard Alan Roden had
the final four. In between, Eady
drained a three-pointer and
Fermanich had a basket.
The Cardinals smacked the
Pointers with another 10-0 blitz
and stretched their lead to 34
points at 86-52 with 4:06 left.
Senior reserve center Brett
Wipfli led that burst with five
points, including a 22-foot
three-pointer from the top of
the key. Eady also had a three-
point play in that stretch, while
senior forward Parker Sigmon
had a basket.
In all, it was easily
Middletons finest performance
of the year. And it gives the
Cardinals hope that anything
and everything is possible as
March Madness nears.
This game is definitely up
there, Fermanich said. And
that was a great opponent. We
did a great job coming out fir-
ing and then holding the lead
throughout the game. It was a
lot of fun.

Hockey Cards hope for playoff magic

The postseason has arrived
for Middletons hockey team.
And the Cardinals look like a
group that no one will want to
play.
Middleton won two of three
games last week and heads to
the postseason having won
seven of its last eight games.
Janesville defeated the
Cardinals, 2-1, last Tuesday.
But Middleton rebounded with
a 7-6 overtime win over
Madison West last Thursday,
then toppled Fond du Lac, 4-1,
last Saturday.
Middleton finished the reg-
ular season 15-8 overall and 8-
6 in the Big Eight Conference,
which gave the Cardinals sole
possession of third place in the
league.
Middleton, the No. 3 seed in
its sectional, now hosts the
winner of sixth-seeded Oregon
and 11th-seeded Madison La
Follette/East in a regional final
Thursday at 8 p.m. If the
Cardinals advance, the section-
al semifinals are Feb. 21 and
the sectional finals are Feb. 24.
In Middletons loss to
Janesville, the Cardinals Zach
Heidel tied the game, 1-1, mid-
way through the third period.
Connor Julius and Bryce
Schuster assisted on the play.
But Janesville notched the
game-winner just 2:02 later.
In Middletons win over
Madison West, Michael
Wolfinger scored 3:44 into

overtime to give the Cardinals
a thrilling victory. That was
also Wolfingers third goal of
the night.
Middleton trailed, 5-3,
heading to the third period. But
Julius had three third period
goals to help the Cardinals
force overtime.
Heidel added a goal and
three assists, while Troy
Reifsteck also had three assists.
Then in the Cardinals win
over Fond du Lac, Reifsteck,
Colin Butler, Julius and Hunter
Kowalski all had goals. Bryson
Lewis saved 17 of 18 shots on
goal and earned the win.

sion 1 Waunakee Regional last
Saturday.
And the Cardinals sent eight
wrestlers onto the Tomah Sec-
tional, which begins Saturday at
10:30 a.m.
Middletons Christopher
Rogers won a regional champi-
onship at 132 pounds, while
Kevin Meicher was first at 138
pounds and Dion Huff won the
title at 170 pounds.
The top four finishers at re-
gionals moved onto sectionals.
Other Cardinals advancing
included Ortez Lockett, who
was second at 195 pounds; third
place finishers Joseph Hoffman
(126), Damian Benitez (145)
and Matt Davey (heavyweight);
and Jesus Quechol Ramirez,

Weve done a good job
battling back, but quality
teams like Stoughton,
(Madison) East and Sun
Prairie will usually not give
up a big lead.We still manage
to score enough points to win
most games, but the easy
points have haunted us in all
three of our losses.
Middleton played much
better against Madison La
Follette, building a 45-19
halftime lead and cruising
home.
Bria Lemirande led all
scorers with 24 points, while
junior center Halle White
added nine. Both sophomore
post Hannah Flottmeyer and
senior wind Carlee Lemirande
added six points.
The La Follette game was
much better, Kind said. We
took control right from the
start and did a good job limit-
ing their offense to 19 points
each half.
Full strength: Kind and
the Cardinals welcomed back
Flottmeyer from a shoulder
injury last week.
She did a nice job on both
ends, Kind said.
Middleton is also hoping
sophomore Charlotte Dunn
can return from a stress frac-
ture in her foot this week.
