Today I spent the morning assisting with a focus group
to get the OEYC (Ontario Early Years Centers)
participants opinions. Last year, the Ministry of
Education announced its plans for streamline child and
to integrate the OEYC programs to provide one point of
access called Ontario Early Years Child and Family
Centers (OEYCFC). This change is planned to be made
in Halton by 2018, and as the process is happening it is
important to hear the opinions of the program
participants.
Objectives:
1. To establish where the programs are helping
2. To figure out where the programs are not
helping.
3. To receive feedback on where the centers can
improve.
Description:
1. The focus group took place at 9:30 during the
Friday morning drop in program
2. The families who participated were able to sit
with their children, or have them monitored by
OEYC ECE staff.
3. The focus group was led by a focus group
professional hired by the region of Halton.
4. Participants in the focus group received a gift
card for participation.
The focus group/drop in went really well, however it
was very busy. There werent as many focus group
participants as expected, but there was a large amount of
children and a wide variety of age groups. It was
interesting hearing about the questions asked at the
focus group and the feedback that was gathered. I just
assisted with the Family Resource Program (FRP)
evaluation and when analyzing the data from it, a lot
overlapped with the feedback collected from
participants in the focus group. It was good to hear that
the responses have been consistent. This makes it easier
to establish what the program participants really want.
Overall, the focus group went very well, and even with
the extremely busy room, it was managed successfully.
