Teekay Pipe Coupling System
Its so simple: You want to join pipes?
Use flexibe system which is not too expensive but is reliable. Join pipes made of different
materials. With a perfect seal. This usually has to be done quickly in spite of limited space and
accessibility. The work or repairs need to be handled fast and with the smallest possible number
of process.

TK-pipe couplings are the ideal solution to this problem. All these requirements - and many
more- are with ease.

TK-pipe couplings are used succesfully in the construction industry, in chemical and process
engineering, in shipbuilding, in sewage, treatment systems, in the mining industry an civil
engineering. There, they ensure that media such as cold and hot water, compressed air,
chemicals and many other substances reach their destination.

TK-Pipe Coupling Systems - Thats Progress

Simple Tolerant

TK-pipe coplings are simple to fit. Flanges, welds TK-pipe coplings allow generous tolerances such

Teekay Pipe Coupling System
Pipe Joints with Advantages

With TK-pipe couplings pipe joints can be reliably effected. Simply

centre the coupling well, tighten it with a torque wrench and the
joint is ready. Because the couplings are supplied as units which
are completely ready for use, with no components which can be lost,
the TK-system is more economical than any conventional joint. In
addition to the latter, trenches can be of a shallower and narrower
design when burying pipes underground. Of course, where pipes
are above ground, the couplings can be re-used again and again.

Modern Pipeline Construction

The TK-pipe coupling system offers a wide range of technical

advantages in many applications. For example, depending on the
type of coupling and its dimensions, compensation can be made for
thermal expansion and contraction, different pipe diameters, lack of
circularity or unevenness in the pipe and angular deflection.
The dynamic design principle of the TK-pipe couplings also enables
damping of pressure surges or vibrations in the pipeline system.

Handy: TK-pipe couplings will prove to be a permanent and reliable solution for you. The robust design and
top quality sealing gaskets ensure a long term, reliable sealing action.

Economical: Save time, space, weight and cost with TK Pipe Couplings.

Versatile: Wide range of material combinations:

Type I: Casing 1.4301, fasteners galvanised and PTFE-coated
Type II: Casing 1.4301, fasteners 1.4401
Type IV: Casing 1.4404, fasteners 1.4401
Type V: Coated Steel

TK-pipe couplings - the No 1 in preventing corrosion damage

Installation in TK-pipe couplings make a joint fast without welding or producing sparks thus reducing the risk of fire
all environments or explosions. TK-pipe couplings can also be used without difficulty in the presence of moisture and
water.

Reduce or Emergency is the motto for TK-pipe couplings. Everywhere where work has to be under- taken quickly.

Teekay Pipe Coupling System
A Complete System

The TK-pipe coupling is a robust pipe coupling, supplied ready

for use, for plain ended pipes of all kinds, for pipe diameters from
DN 15 to 4000 mm, at operating pressures up to 16 bar and
temperatures from -30 to +250C. We offer different materials for
an extremely wide range of application. In numerous designs and
versions. As a standard Axiflex coupling for normal requirements.
As an Axilock coupling for positive-locking joints. Or TKREP, the
hingedrepair coupling to seal a very wide range of leaks. TKST
Teekay Stepped Couplings are made for pipe diameters which differ
by up to 25 mm. Flange adapters, reducers and fittings round off
the TK-pipe coupling system.

Solutions Tailored to Your Needs

The extensive system permits solutions tailored to each individual

problem. Thus, for example, both the housing of the TK coupling
and the fasteners can be supplied as standard in four different
qaulities; the gasket in three different qaulities. Individual corrosion
protection treatments and a wide range of fittings are available on
request. Talk to us about your requirements.
We have the right solution.

Proven Internationally

The couplings from the TK-system provide valuable services in

pipeline construction worldwide.Everywhere, where speed and
ease of handling appear as significant factors alongside reliability
nd safety in use, TK-pipe couplings are now seen as a component
in conventional pipeline construction. Whether as a part of the
main water supply in Bordeaux, the drainage system in Bahrain,
phosphate plants in the USA or oil refineries in Thailand,
TK-pipe couplings have proved themselves a convincing solution
everywhere.

Reliably Documented

Each coupling is marked with its type, diameter, pressure rating,

torque and traceability reference - a particularly important aspect
in sofar as re-using is concerned.
The pipe couplings are approved by:
Lloyds Register of Shipping, Bureau Veritas, BWB, VdS,
KTW approval from DVGW for the rubber, German Lloyd,
National Water Council, Aramco Overseas Group, Sarawak
Electricity Generating Board, USSR Register of Shipping, US Army
Corps of Engineers, Department of Environment, Det Norske
Veritas, R.I.N.A., P.S.A.-UK, Metropolitan City of New York,
cities of Jubail and Yanbu and Water Research Centre.
More certificates are in preparation and may be obtained on request.
A works certificate is available for the raw material.

5
Advantages of the TK-Pipe coupling

1. Anchor ring of the Axilock coupling fully fitted in the gasket

The outer rubber end seal prevents the corrosion of the anchor ring. The end seal lips keep moisture and water from
ontacting the surface of the pipe. No sharp edges are present because of the rubber seal, as a consequence of which
the fitter is protected from injury when undertaking assembly work. If the coupling is dismantled subsequently, it is
easier to release the anchor ring because the rubber pushes it back and there is no corrosion.

2. The Axilock coupling with multiple sealing chambers

These reduce and distribute the quantity of water within the coupling and thus prevent the housing bending outwards
under high pressure.

3. Fully welded seams

Fully welded seams do not offer any possibility of tearing apart the area surrounding the weld. The welds consist of the
same material and are fully passivated to prevent corrosion.

4. PTFE-coating of the screws of type I, and SLV-coating for type II and type IV1

The PTFE-coating provides double protection for the screw sets. Firstly the PTFE-coating protects the screws more
effectively than a lubricant. Secondly, the protective coating prevents galvanic corrosion which can form between the
screwed joint and the surface of the housing (type I). The SLV-coating provides protection from the risk of "seizing" by
the stainless steel screws.

5. The sealing lips

The profile of the sealing lips is designed in such a way that it adjusts to the pipe when the coupling is tightened.
This profile acts like a pressure seal. This can be demonstrated using a stress-relief test.

6. The sealing lips seal tighter when pressure increases

The small amount of radial pressure divided between the sealing chambers relative to the axial force of the pipe causes
a beam effect in the coupling casing which increases the sealing effect at elevated pressures.

7. Strong cross-section profile of the sealing gasket

The design of the gasket was selected so that, even after long use, it retains its original shape.

8. Built-in fire sleeve for Axilock-FS-coupling

It is possible to fit an integral fire sleeve into the double metal housing (patented). See page 12.

9. Availability of the stepped coupling gasket

The stepped coupling can be used for joining pipes with different external diameters (European patent no. 0214395A1).

Compensation for relatively large differences in the

external diameter of the pipes is made via the TK
reducer. This consists of a larger and a smaller
TKS-standard coupling which connects the actual
reducer to the respective pipes. TK reducers may be
supplied as concentric, eccentric or special designs.
All pipe diameters complying with DIN or
international standards can be supplied.

Flange Adapter

A problem-solver for connecting plain end pipes to

valves, pumps, pressure gauges, flanged pipes and
all fittings and connections which end with a flange.
It is easy to fit or remove the flanged component.
As a flexible connection, the flange adapter
simultaneously protects expensive equipment from
loads and stresses caused by rigid joints. In addition,
the rubber gasket dampens vibration and noise.

Compensation for Different Pipe Diameters:

Compensation for differences in the external pipe diameters

of pipes to be joined together. The stepped coupling can
compensate for differences of up to 25 mm in pipe diameter
(see page 18). Differences of any size required can be
overcome with the TK reducer (see page 6).

Compensation for Vibration/Pressure Surges:

Damping vibrations, pressure surges etc via the design of

the rubber gasket. If there is extreme vibration loading, we
recommend using sealing gaskets with a central register to
exclude the possibility of the couplings moving.
See illustration right.

Radial Forces:

The radial forces, which are exerted by the coupling on the

pipe, are slight. The sealing effect of the Teekay pipe
couplings is not achieved by over-tightening the screws but
rather via the dynamic sealing principle of the gasket lips.

Axial Forces:

Teekay pipe couplings are not positive locking joints - with

the exception of the TKA-Axilock pipe coupling (see page10).
Depending on choice of coupling type, make sure that
sufficient design consideration has been given to absorbing
tensile or compressive forces. For example, it is necessary to
provide a sufficient number of fixed points when laying
pressure bearing pipes above ground, and thrust blocks
for buried applications.

Compensation for Axial Displacement

It is not possible to make direct compensation for axial

displacement. The axial displacement can be broken down
into angular deflections by inserting spacers. Compensation
can then be provided.

Distance between Pipe ends

For Axilock Couplings the optimum distance between pipe ends is 0 - 5mm. This allows for expansion and
contraction, suction and vacuum, pipe deflection and a reasonable cutting tolerance. See also page 22.

For Axiflex, Stepped and Axiflex HC Couplings the recommended gap between pipe ends depends on the
width of the coupling and whether or not a vacuum ring is fitted. When this gap is exceeded
(or in all vacuum applications) a vacuum insert must be fitted.

TK-Pipe Coupling Fitting Instruction

Teekay Axilock Pipe Couplings should always be installed in accordance with good piping practice, conforming to the
relevant industry standards. For example:

Standard Teekay Axiflex Pipe Couplings are not designed to accept end load pressures. As a result, pipes must generally
be anchored against internal pressure at changes in direction, branches, valves and at pipe ends.
For example:

A =Anchor or thrust block F =Fixed support S =Sliding support or guide

HELMOND - DOETINCHEM - ROTTERDAM - SOEST

10
TK-Pipe Coupling Fitting Instructions
Buried pipelines can generally be restrained by means of thrust blocks at major changes in direction. Straight runs and
minor curves are usually restrained by soil friction.

The same is largely true of gravity or very low pressure pipelines running along the ground, although with certain
thermoplastic piping materials special attention should be given to restraining the forces generated by excessive
expansion, contraction and creep.

For above ground applications it is recommended that pipelines should be anchored as shown in the following diagram:

A A
S F S F S S

A =Anchor or thrust block F =Fixed support S =Sliding support or Guide

Intermediate anchors should be designed to withstand the forces and movements transferred and imposed upon them by
each of the pipe sections to which they are attached, taking into account such forces as friction, wind load, self weight,
and changes in fluid momentum.

Above ground pipelines subject to side thrusts, or required to be used to absorb angular deflections or lateral
displacements, must be adequately restrained and supported.

Supporting of the pipeline for shear deadweight must be carried out to ensure that no excessive sagging occurs beyond
the limits of angular deflection of the coupling. Support pitching will depend on pipe material, diameter, wall thickness
and operating temperature.

A simple method of harnessing pipelines is by welding lugs to the pipe and connecting them with tie rods.

TEMPERATURE

The operating temperature of the coupling is limited by

the choice of gasket material.

EPDM: -40C to +100C

NBR: -30C to + 80C
VITON: -20C to +250C

ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY

In Teekay Axilock Pipe Couplings electrical conductivity

is conveyed through the coupling casing by the anchor rings.

In Teekay Axiflex Pipe Couplings stainless steel continuity

strips are fitted to prevent the build up of static electricity
(these should be specifically requested at time of order).

SUPPORT AND RESTRAINT

Teekay Axilock Pipe Couplings are designed to restrain the

pipes axially. However, they are also flexible, allowing
some axial and angular movement. Therefore the pipes
should be guided to ensure that they remain within 2
angular deflection, especially where a long run of pipes
suddenly changes direction.

PARALLEL MISALIGNMENT

The maximum permissible parallel or concentric misalignment

for a Teekay coupling is 1% of the pipe OD or 3mm which
ever is less.

12
Fitting the TeeKay Coupling
Important
Please read fitting instructions thoroughly before installing Teekay products

Before Installation

1. Keep the coupling clean. Keep it in the packaging until assembly if possible.

2. Clean the ends of the pipes. Remove any residues such as burrs, rust or other surface contamination.

3. Mark the end of each pipe with half the width of the coupling using chalk or a marker pen.

4. Do not dismantle the coupling.

Method

1. Insert both pipe ends into the coupling evenly.

2. Tighten the screws evenly using a torque wrench. The position of the screws on the circumference of the pipe is
not important.

Assembly

1. Slide the coupling over one end of a pipe to be fitted.

2. Butt the end of the second pipe against the first pipe.

3. Slide the coupling over the joint in such a way that the marking on the first pipe becomes visible.

4. Move the pipes apart carefully, so that the markings are visible on both pipe ends.
It's as simple as that!

TK-FP Axilock Pipe Coupling with Flame Protection

The newest product in the TK-Pipe Coupling System

As a consequence of increased demands on the part of the

Bundesamt fr Wehrtechnik und Beschaffung (BWB) [Federal Office
of Weapons Technology and Procurement], the TKA-Axilock pipe
couplings were subjected to a special test on 24.09.96.

In a simulated natural fire, our coupling continued to provide a

leakproof seal at a temperature of 800 to 1000C for 60 minutes.
Successful pressure tests were then undertaken at up to 38.5 bar.

Resulting from the unique design of our Axilock pipe coupling

(double metal housing), our engineers came up with the idea of
incorporating an integral firesleeve.

With very great success, as the test has shown.

Casings
Patened double casing available for resistance against yield
of the steel at high pressure-superb shock resistance
Fully insulated fire sleeve option, factory fitted, ready to use
Permanent fir resistance by patened system requiring no
maintenance and no special installation procedures
TIG seam welding of tensioned parts-fully passivated
against crevice corrosion and resistant to shock and vibration
Unique beam effect-as pressure increases, the casing actually
compresses the gasket more (other couplings bow outwards
under pressure)
Coated steel casings have fusion bonded coatings which are
300m thick
Gaskets
Simple high density gasket profile for effective sealing
High ratio of volume of material relative to the space to be
sealed for for long term efficiency
Keeps shape over time, temperature, vibration and shock
Can give a measurable 200+ year life expectancy
Smooth gasket interior avoids snagging on pipe ends
Patened end seals encapsulate the anchor rings, seal them
against corrosion and dampen shock and vibration
Encapsulated anchor rings protect the installer from sharp edges
Lockparts
Solid retaining bars
Retaining bars are spot faced-there are no stress points on
the screw heads
Dry lubrication ensures permanent grease and dirt free
tightening of threaded parts
No galling or seizing of threads-crucial for repeated usage
Inert coating of dissimilar metals ensures protection against
galvanic corrosion
Anchor Rings
Anchor rings protected by patented end seals
Sealed anchor rings prevent corrosion of both the anchor ring
AND pipe surface
End seals reduce stress and dampen vibration and shock
around the anchor rings ensuring uniform, fatigue free, long
term performance
Rings are sharpened for efficient bite on the pipe material
When the coupling is loosened, the end seals help the
disengagement of the anchor ring from the pipe surface
without damage to the pipe or coupling-crucial for re-using
Packaging
All couplings are individually bagged or wrapped
Couplings are kept clean from factory to point of installation

TK-AXIFLEX Coupling
Function: Pipe coupling to connect plain ended pipes made of any material quickly which have approximately
the same external diameters. The Teekay Axiflex coupling compensates for expansion, angular
deflection, out of roundness, differences in pipe diameter and vibrations.

Design: Connection and sealing by means of sealing lips on each end of the gasket. A steel casing surrounds
and holds the gasket. The coupling is held in place by tightening 2 to max. 4 screws on the casing.

DN-ranges: Nominal bores from 15 mm to 4000 mm

Anchorage: The couplings are flexible and are therefore not designed to absorb axial forces. Pipelines under
pressure laid above ground may need anchors or fixed points.

Operating pressure: Up to 16 bar

Type VI
Notes: Casing: Stainless steel (1.4462) Duplex
1 Maximum pipe gap without vacuum ring can be doubled
on applications where intrusion of the rubber gasket into Fasteners: Stainless steel (1.4462) Duplex
the pipe gap is not a problem.
2 Maximum pipe gap with vacuum ring is limited by the Gasket: EPDM, alternatively: NITRILE (NBR),
maximum angle of deflection. If the angle of deflection VITON
is less than the maximum allowable angle of deflection,
the maximum pipe gap (with vacuum ring) can be EXPANSION AND CONTRACTION
increased accordingly. Teekay Axilock Pipe Couplings can accommodate up to 6mm
expansion / contraction in a straight line.
At changes of direction make sure that any resultant angular
deflection is restricted to a maximum of 2.

Teekay Axiflex Couplings can accept thermal expansion or

contraction of the pipeline by axial movement through the
coupling or by the angulation of two couplings. In either
case the pipeline should be adequately restrained.

If it is not possible to place intermediate anchors between LATERAL DISPLACEMENT

couplings, the Teekay Axiflex Coupling can be supplied Lateral displacement may be accommodated by the use
with an integral central register, (see Page 14), to locate of two Teekay Couplings with an intermediate length of
the coupling. The recommended maximum pipe axial pipe. Lateral displacement between two pipes then
expansion or contraction which can be accepted by one becomes simple angular deflection at each coupling.
coupling is as follows: Hence, the amount of displacement which can be
accommodated in a given configura-tion is related to the
permissible angular deflection.
(See above.)

SHOCK, VIBRATION, WATER HAMMER

Due to the design of the gasket Teekay Couplings dampen
sound, vibration and water hammer. Shock levels to
military requirements can also be accommodated.
In the case of Teekay Axiflex Couplings for applications
where excessive vibration might occur it is recommended
that the couplings are supplied with central registers to
locate the coupling in position.

23
Teekay TKR Hinged Coupling
Function: Hinged coupling for retro fitting to existing pipeline systems made of any material for sealing holes,
radial cracks, relatively small axial cracks or as a replacement for leaking joints.

Design: The casing is made of sheet steel, can be opened around a hinge and is closed on the opposite side
by two or more screws. The seal is provided by the two sealing lips of the gasket. The gasket is split.
When the coupling is tightened the ends of the gasket are forced together to form a leak free seal.

DN-ranges: Nominal bores from 40 mm to 4000 mm

Anchorage: When used as a replacement for leaking joints, fixed points should be set up if necessary.
Hinged couplings are flexible but do not provide positive locking in the longitudinal direction.
