Time: 1 Hrs Maximum: 50 marks
Answer ALL questions

PART A (4 2=8, 1x1=1 marks)
1. Write down the different modes of heat transfer and also explain each one.
2. State the Fourier law of heat conduction and write its expression.
3. Write the Poissons and Laplace equation for steady state heat conduction.
4. What is lumped system analysis?
5. Distinguish between laminar and turbulent flow.

PART B (2 13=26 marks)
6. A large composite wall is made up of 75mm marble of thermal conductivity 1.25W/mK,
70mm brick of conductivity 0.62 W/mK, 205mm pine of conductivity 0.12W/K and 175mm
inside plaster of conductivity 0.25W/mK. The outside unit surface conductance is 33W/m2K
and inside unit surface conductance is 12W/m2K. outside temperature is 20C and inside
temperature is 23C.negelecting the thermal resistance of 5mm mortar joint between marble
and brick find the following i)U, ii)Q, iii)Temperature of the brick pine interface. iv)The
thermal conductivity of the mortar. [Assume mortar brick interface temperature is 21C, heat
loss is reduced by 10%]. [13]

7. An aluminum alloy fin of 7mm thick and 50mm long protrudes from a wall, which is
maintained at 120C. The ambient air temperature is 22C. The heat transfer coefficient and
conductivity of the fin material are 140W/m 2K and 55W/mK respectively. Determine i)
Temperature at the end of the fin. ii) Temperature at the middle of the fin. iii) Total heat
dissipated by the fin. [13]

PART C (1 15=15 marks)
8. a) Alloy steel ball of 12mm diameter heated to 800C is quenched in a bath at 100C. The
material properties of the ball are K=205kJ/m hr k, =7860kg/m3, Cp=0.45kJ/kg K,
h=150KJ/hr m2K. Determine i) Temperature of ball after 10sec and ii) Time for ball to
cool to 400C. [08]
b) A electric current is passed through a plane wall of thickness 25mm and 120mm wide,
which is used to heat a fluid at 30C. The heat generation rate is 65X10 5W/m3. Thermal
conductivity of the plate is 25W/m K. Calculate the heat transfer co-efficient to maintain
the temperature of the plate below 150C. [07]
