HW1 Chapter 21
Show All Steps of the Solution

Q. 1.
In the figure shown below, three charged particles are placed at the corners of
an equilateral triangle of side 1.40 m. The charges are Q1 = +9.0 C, Q2 = -7.0
C, and Q3 = -4.0 C. Calculate the magnitude and direction of the net force on
each of the two charges Q1 and Q2 due to the other two.

Q. 2.
The sum of two charges Q1 and Q2 that are carried by two insulating spherical objects is 80.0 C. If their
32
separation is 4
m = 1.061 m, the force each exerts on the other is 12.0 N. What are the two charges?

Q. 3.
A proton is projected with an initial velocity vi = (5.0 104 m/s)i into a region of a uniform electric field
where E = (-2.0i + 6.0j) 104 N/C.

(a) Determine the vector acceleration of the proton as a function of time.

(b) Determine the magnitude and direction of the velocity vector of the proton at t = 0.2 s.

Q. 4. Show all steps of the solution NOT just the final answers!
A region in the xy-plane has linear charge distributed along the y-axes as shown in the
figure with a uniform density 1 = 5nC/m. There is also a ring (radius = 0.4 m; coaxial
with the x-axis and centred at x = - 0.35m) that carries a uniform linear charge density 2
= 3nC/m.

(a) Determine the total charge of the system.

(b) Determine the magnitude and direction of the electric field at the origin.

Q. 5.
The electron and the proton in the hydrogen atom are attracted together by electric forces (i.e. force
between two charges) and gravitational forces (i.e. force between two masses). Determine the ratio
between these two forces. Notice the similarity between the two formulae used for the forces they
are called inverse squared law.

Q. 6.
A molecule with a permanent electric dipole moment = 2.6 10-30 C.m. The positive charge of the
dipole q = 3.2 10-19 C. The dipole is placed inside a uniform electric field E = 4.7 104 N/C.

(a) Determine the distance separating the two equal and opposite charges of the dipole.

(b) What is the work required to rotate the dipole from being oriented parallel to the field to being
antiparallel to the field?

(c) Determine the torque exerted on the dipole when it is at an angle 40o to the electric field.

Q.7. Sketch the electric field lines for the charge arrangements shown below. Note sketch means it is
the principle behind the drawing that you should concentrate on, and not the fine details of the
drawing.

Bonus Question
(a) Three point charges are
fixed on the vertices of the equilateral triangle ABG as shown in the
figure below. Show that the position (i.e. distance x from D) where the
total force experienced by another positive point charge Q4 would be
zero satisfies the following equation

2(x2 + d2/4)3/2 = 3x (d cos30 x)2

Q1= +4.0 C; Q2= Q3= +3.0 C; and d = 2.8m

(b) What would be the position if Q4 is negative?

(c) If both charges Q2 and Q3were equal and negative would there be an equilibrium position along the
bisecting line passing through D? If so where would be (Q4 is positive and do not solve but just label on
the figure).

(d) What is the value of Q4?
