Science
We are learning about the structures and
properties of matter.
Students will develop a model to
explain how quickly saltwater
evaporates.
Using models created, students will
observe and identify materials based
on properties.

Utilizing the Schoolwide Reading Curriculum
our focus is on the fiction unit of study.
During all units students will:
Ask questions to clarify and deepen
understanding
Apply self-monitoring skills and strategies
to determine meaning
Identify big ideas and supporting details
Synthesize information across texts
Compare texts
Deepen understanding of authors purpose
During this unit students will:
Recognize different types and structures of
fiction
Identify common story elements and key
details
Understand narrative, chronological structure
Understand how the plot fits into the larger
structure of the story
How writers develop point of view
In addition to the other texts, we will also be reading:
Rain Reign as our whole class novel. Students will
practice annotation and reading like and reader and
reading like a writer during this time as well.

Social Studies
Using the Illinois social science standards as
a guide we will continue to learn about Unit 3
and the founding of The Thirteen Colonies.
Our focus will be on gathering and evaluating
sources, movement, examining rules and laws
of the time, human-environment interaction,
and local and global economy.

Math
We are using Bridges Math
In grade 5 math, your child will: learn new strategies
and processes for solving math problems. Students will
be challenged to work hard and apply different
thinking skills. Students will build stamina for solving
complex problems that require perseverance.
Students will:
use models and strategies to learn and practice
division of 2 and 3 digit numbers. (Standard
algorithm is not used until 6th grade)
add and subtract fractions with unlike
denominators
multiply fractions and divide fractions in simple
cases
measure volume
explain patterns in the number of zeros and
the placement of the decimal point in the
answer when multiplying or dividing by powers
of 10
read, write, round, compare, add & subtract,
multiply & divide decimals
multiply multi-digit whole numbers
locate and graph points on a coordinate plane
