Dear Parents and Guardians,
Our field trip to Lansing will be on Thursday,
February 23rd. Students are asked to report to the
classroom between 7:00-7:15 AM. The bus will
depart at 7:30. We plan to return by 3:30 PM.
Our Valentines Party was a success. A huge thank you
goes out to Mrs. Whittington for planning and running
all of our holiday parties this year. Also, thank you to
those of you who helped by donating food/supplies
and/or your time.
Reading
The children have been learning about the following
informational text structures: chronological, comparison,
cause/effect, and problem/solution.
The students are progressing well on the 40-book
challenge. Many have already surpassed that goal and
have set new goals.
Writing
We are putting the finishing touches on the first of two
literary essays. The students are writing five-paragraph
essays that state a theme and support that theme with
evidence from the text.
The students are utilizing our classrooms
Chromebooks to access Google docs through their
school email accounts. If you have Internet at home,
feel free to ask your child to show you what he/she has
completed so far.

adults learned to solve long division problems.
Students were also introduced to two other strategies:
Expanded Notation Method and Place Value Sections Method.
Any review of long division that you could do at home
would help solidify the material. The fourth grade
expectation is to divide four-digit dividends by 1-digit
divisors. (Ex. 4,679 3)
Long division can be performed much more quickly
when multiplication facts can be recalled with ease.
Therefore, the 100-problem multiplication tests
continue. Tomorrow, the goal will be to complete 100
problems in 4 minutes and 15 seconds. Were
gradually working toward our final goal, which is 100
problems in 3 and a half minutes.
Math Lab
The focus in this session of math lab is geometry:
quadrilaterals (rhombuses, rectangles, squares, trapezoids,
parallelograms), points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right,
obtuse, acute) parallel and perpendicular lines, triangles
(equilateral, isosceles, scalene, and right) and symmetry.
Science
We recently kicked off our earth/space science unit.
Students are currently learning about the Earths
rotation on its axis.
Social Studies
On Friday, we will have a quiz over the Legislative
Branch of the U.S. Government. A study guide will
come home today.

Recess Policy
Our schools recess policy is that the children will go outside
for recess daily unless its raining, the temperature is under
15 degrees, or the wind chill is below zero. Please contact our
schools counselor, Mr. Long, or me if you need assistance
providing outdoor clothing.
