We began our journey in the capital,Trinifuegos,a 1 conurbation of


almostten million. lt is not a pretty place;heavily2 , with huge factories
b e l c h i n go u t b l a c kf u m e s ,a n d m i l e so f 3 a s h o u s i n ge s t a t e sa n d s h o p p i n g
centressoreadout from the 4 centrefor miles.lt was a relief to leave.

As soon as we got into the countryside,things improvedconsiderably. The climate is dry and it is
difficult to grow anything,but thanks to 5 , h i c h h e l p sb r i n g w a t e r i n

from the Rio Cauto(the huge riverwith its 6 high up in the snow-covered
7 of the SierraMaestra 8 ), the land isfertile
enough to grow the sugar cane on which much of the economy is based.We saw few people,
howevel as many have movedto the towns and citiesto look for more profitablework. lt is largely
d u e t o t h i s r u r a l9 that the sugar-caneindustryis suffering.

F u r t h e rs o u t h a n d w e e n t e r e dt h e H o l o u i n 1 0 , w i t h m o u n t a i n rsi s i n g
high above us on both sides.The land here drops sharplyto the sea and the slow-movingwaters
o f t h e R i o C a u t og i v ew a y t o 1 1 which tumble over cliffs,and small,fast-
m o v i n g1 2 which are not evenwide enoughto take a boat. At this point,
t h e r o a dw e w e r e t r a v e l l i n ga l o n g b e c a m ea 1 3 w h i c hw a s o n l y j u s t w i d e

And then suddenly,the Pacific15 was in front of us.Our destinationwas


t h e t o w n o f S a n t i a g od e G i b a r a ,b u i l t o n a 1 6 s t i c k i n go u t i n t o t h e b l u e
waters.Thb countrysidehere undulatesgently, with low 17 coveredin
r i c ht r o p i c a jl u n g l e .T h e o p e n 1 8 s u r r o u n d i n gt h e d e l t a o f t h e R i o C a u t o
as it reachesthe ocean is rich and 19 ideal for growing the tobacco
plantswhich need a lot of warm, damp soil.

That night I layin my cheap hotel,listeningto the wavesgentlylappingthe 20
