Applying and using exponential growth and

decay

Describe how you made sense of the

exponential form y = ab x Describe how you
made sense of growth and decay rate

I made sense of it because all you had to do was

plug in for A, B and X. So for example if you have
A=7 and B=4 you would have a equation of y=7*4x
and then you would pug in a number for the x like
1,2,3. For decay it will be the same all I did was
plug in the numbers. For decay the numbers
would be going down.
Growth
X y = 3 * 2x

0 3 * 20 = 3
1 3 * 21 = 6
2 3 * 22 = 12
3 3 * 23 = 24
Decay

X y = (12)x

0 (12)0 = 1
1 (12)1 = 12
2 (12)2 = 14
3 (12)3 = 18
4 (12)4 = 16

Compounding interest

Describe how you made sense of

compounding interest and simple interest?

For this one you will be plugging into this equation

p(1 + r)t for example you invest 100 dollars and
you will have a 10% interest it will look like this
100(1 + 0.10)1 . The P=100 the R= 0.10 form 10%
and the t is the year. All you are doing is plugging
in the numbers from the problem.

Describe how you made sense of

compounding interest and continuously
compounding interest?

For this one all you would do is plug in for N. Then

you will solve for the equation.like
1 )100 = 2.70481 You will then add one more
1(1 + 100
0 to 100 to get 1000 and you will continue on
doing that.

Describe how e (Eulers Number) can be

found using the following formula
(1 + 1n) n (Hint: Start with n = 1 and keep
getting bigger 10, 100, 1000, etc) What

N A = (1 + 1n)n

1 A = (1 + 11)1 = 2

100 1 )100 = 2.704

A = (1 + 100

1000 1 )1000 = 2.716

A = (1 + 1000

10000 1 )10000 = 2.718

A = (1 + 10000
Solving for exponents in equations

Describe how you made sense of solving

for exponents in equations when the bases
can be made the same.
What I did is that For the exponents is that you
had to find out what the missing exponent is. If
you had 53n = 125 find out n. So how I understood
it is that 5 times 3 is 125 so n would be 1. All you
are doing is seeing what is n and how could you
2k
get it. If it is like 3 = 81 you know it will not equal
81 so you will do this equation. You also know that
34 is 81 so that is what it will be but how do you get
it. You will do 2K 4
2 = 2 = 2 So K will equal -2. You
will then plug it into 32*2 = 81 the two -2 will
equal 4 and then 34= 81. That is how you will get
it.

Describe how you made sense of solving

for exponents in equations when the bases
are not the same. (Hint: Look at your
definition of a Logarithm Notes)
All to will have to do is get the same base as i
showed above. You need to get both the numbers
to equal the number that is coming out.

Logarithms

Describe how you made sense of

converting between the logarithmic and
exponential form of an equation.
All you would be doing is plugging in the numbers
in different places. So if Log11121 = 2 (this is log
form) to get it into equation for you will just move
the numbers. So it will go form Log11121 = 2 to
112 = 121 You could also see what will equal 121.
It will be 112. To get it the other way it will be you
will do the opposite. Here is another equation
52 = 25 then it will be log525 = 2

-Describe how you made sense of the Log

Properties.
The way how I understood it is that you will just be
plugging in the numbers to the equation. That is
how it will work. Then you will be solving for the
equation?

Part 2: Exponents and Logs Unit Reflection (4 points)

What did you grapple with during this unit?
What I did was mainly just go back to the notes so I could Understand what I need to do to finish
the problem. Also I just thought that I need to plug in some Numbers.
What habits of a mathematician did you use?
I used Collaborate and Listen, Look for Patterns and Solve a Simpler Problem because for most of
the problems I used this mainly if I had a hard time.
Having finished the portfolio how prepared do you feel for Fridays test? How can you be
more prepared?
I feel prepared for the Test. I am still going to study for it but overall I feel very good for the test
because I know the math.
