What is Grid?
A grid is a network of lines.
It is a tool for generating form,
arranging images, and
organizing information.
The grid can work quietly in the
background, or it can assert itself as an
active element.
The grid becomes visible as
objects come into
alignment with it.
Some designers use grids in a strict,
absolute way, while others see them as a
starting point in an evolving process.
In the design of printed
matter, guidelines help the designer
align elements in relation to each
other.

Consistent margins and columns

create an underlying structure that
unifies a document and makes the
layout process more efficient.
A well-made grid encourages the
designer to vary the scale & placement of
elements without relying wholly on
arbitrary judgements.
The grid offers a rationale and
a starting point for each composition,
converting a blank area into a
structured field.
Basic Part of Grid
Units are uniform divisions that are the basic building blocks of your page. Units
are usually a multiple of three or four. Units are grouped to create columns,
and to place and align text and images.

Columns are groupings of units that create the main structure of your page. i.e.: 2
col- umn grid, 3 column grid, 4 column grid.

Half-Columns are exactly that: the width of half of your column based on your unit
increments. Half-columns are a good place to start captions, small photos
and quotes.

Gutters are the gaps in between columns/ units. They provide consistent spac-
ing between text and images.

Margins are the top, bottom, left and right borders you set up to contain your
grid. The margins you set can place your grid symmetrical or asymmetrical on
your page.
The Purpose of Grid
The grid is a professional tool of objectivity in
applied aesthetics, and its practical purposes fall
into three classes:

Repeatability
Composition
Communication
