INVESTING IN PUBLIC SAFETY, JOB CREATION, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN CHICAGO'S NEIGHBORHOODS This budget amendment will allow for additional investments in critical public safety programs and neighborhood improvement projects, including supporting police work, expanding youth services, creating jobs and investing in our communities. These investments taken together are vital tools for addressing public safety concerns in neighborhoods across Chicago. To make these critical public safety and neighborhood improvement projects, the City is allocating $14.7 million of available property tax rebate money from the 2016 City of Chicago Property Tax Rebate Program. In sum, the package is estimated to create more than 1,000 jobs over the next few years. ‘The budget amendment includes: * $2.8 million to support the expedited expansion of CPD'S body worn cameras to all district police officers by the end of 2017; * $1.6 million for crime-fighting intel centers, providing tools to facilitate quicker response times and will have an overall impact on crime reduction; * $2 million to go towards a capital fund for neighborhood contractors, investors and developers to rehab vacant homes in designated communities and provide job training to young adults; * $1 million for a pilot program that will train CCC students in cyber security best practices to prepare them to secure critical computer networks in the public and private sectors; * $1.8 million to support after-school athletics programs for CPS elementary students and other after-school programs that operate in CPS schools; * $3.5 million to fund park infrastructure improvements to ensure Chicago's youth continue to have a variety of safe spaces for positive recreational opportunities; * $1 million to create a new small business incubator on the West Side; and © $1 million towards a call center in the South Side to create jobs and job training opportunities. A previous proposal included $500,000 for trees in each ward; this proposal was amended to instead put the additional funds towards the crime-fighting intel centers where funding for this project is now at $1.6 million tH
