The Cell Organelle Analogy Prezi is a summative assessment that should be given at the end of the cellular structure and
function unit in a high school biology course, after students have had multiple attempts to demonstrate understanding of cellular
organelles through in-class assignments. Students will be given class time in order to learn the information related to cellular
organelles while accessing the information on the website: http://sb1acellstructure.weebly.com/ along with other classroom activities
and resources. Students will be given the rubric after the presentation of materials and will be explained how to ensure that they will
receive full points for the assignment. Because the assessment implementation window was during the summer months, former
Honors Biology students completed the assignment outside of class utilizing only the information on the provided website and online
instructions, provided below.

Using the following website: http://sb1acellstructure.weebly.com/ familiarize yourself with the structure and function of the cellular
organelles in a eukaryotic cell. Then, create a Prezi presentation that compares the function of 10 cellular organelles to something in
real-life. In order to receive full credit each of the analogies must be related to a central theme.

Report of Findings:
Overall the assessment went as planned. Students were able to complete the assignment with little redirection, assistance or
clarification. One student simply needed moderate assistance with using the Prezi site. Had this assignment been completed during a
normal school year with face to face instruction it would have been easy to assist the students with any kind of troubleshooting. This
topic lent itself very well to have students complete remotely because it is a topic that students are well familiar with after being taught
multiple times in life science courses. Students also have a moderate working knowledge of using Prezi and most felt comfortable
using the site without any issues.
The responses provided by the students were on par with what was to be expected and in some instances were far more
creative than anticipated. In order to improve this assessment for the future it might be prudent to increase the difficulty of the
assignment by having students compare cellular functions to the different types of cells in the body and relate it to cellular
differentiation. In the future I would also like to spend more time with students to review the importance of digital design. Many of the
projects lost points because the text on the slides was difficult to read. By teaching simple design elements to students it would be
provide for even better responses than the ones provided. This could be done by providing both good and bad examples for students to
see the appropriate format. One final change that I would like to make for this project would be to provide a rubric with more detail
and without the blanks between the different points criteria. With more planning I think that this rubric may be easier to read for
students and therefore less open to interpretation.

After analyzing the final scores from this project, I have determined two things. One, that not enough students participated in this
assessment to garner true data about the validity of the assignment. Future implementations would be necessary to determine if there
are any achievement gaps between groups. Second, that this assessment may not be challenging enough for the group of students to
which it was assigned. With three of the four participating students scoring at least a 90% on the assessment I do not think that this
project required a depth of knowledge that was challenging to the students. That being said, it does demonstrate that the rubric and
instructions were clear for students to understand the expectations of the assignment and that they were able to successfully complete
the assignment.

After speaking with my cooperating teacher, we feel confident that with a little tweaking this project could be highly effective in
determining if students understand the course content as it relates to cellular organelles. The instructions and rubric will require a little
bit of tweaking to ensure that there is no misunderstanding about the intent of the assignment. We would also like to provide examples
for students to show them how the project should be set up for both design purposes and content set-up. Finally, we feel that this
assessment would best be suited for a General-level Biology course and not for Honors. This is due to the fact that we feel that it is not
challenging enough for Honors students. We were happy to see that students were able to do so well on the assignment. When this
assessment is implemented in the future we look forward to more face to face interaction with students and to helping students
demonstrate their mastery of the information.
