Part 1: Unit Summary

Learning Statement
Tell the story of how you made sense of the different concepts throughout this unit. Be sure to hit all of the
following talking points, and include all activities/worksheets that are applicable. You must use artifacts
(worksheet, turn-in assignments, notes, class discussions) from this unit as evidence.

1. Applying and using exponential growth and decay (4 points)

a. Describe how you made sense of the exponential form y = ab x
b. Describe how you made sense of growth and decay rate
i. b = 1 + r
ii. b = 1 r
2. Compounding interest (4 points)
a. Describe how you made sense of compounding interest and simple interest?
b. Describe how you made sense of compounding interest and continuously compounding interest?
c. Describe how e (Eulers Number) can be found using the following formula (1 + 1n) n
(Hint: Start with n = 1 and keep getting bigger 10, 100, 1000, etc) What is happening as n gets
bigger? *
3. Solving for exponents in equations (4 points)
a. Describe how you made sense of solving for exponents in equations when the bases can be
made the same.
b. Describe how you made sense of solving for exponents in equations when the bases are not the
same. (Hint: Look at your definition of a Logarithm Notes)
4. Logarithms (4 points)
a. Describe how you made sense of converting between the logarithmic and exponential form of
an equation.
b. Describe how you made sense of the Log Properties.

Part 1: Unit Summary Answers Here

Beautiful examples (Your assignment work here! Amazing Narratives
Evidence)
In the notes y = ab x a (a>0) is the initial amount Growth and Decay:
(when x= 0) and b is the base (the factor by which the I found that by making In-Out tables I was able to
population changes every time x increases by one better understand and make sense of
unit (when x=0) ) y = ab x .
- y = ab x = ab 0 = a1 = a and b 0 = 1

- b = 1 + r I made sense of the growth and decay rate because

- b = 1 r when you are adding the rate, the rate in
increasing(growth) the percentage is increased. Then
when you are taking away from the rate, the rate is
decreasing(decay) the percentage is decreased.

In the notes: Exponents and Log:

logarithmic form: log base(usually: 10) to x = z
Exponential form: base multiplied by z = x I made sense of this by switching around each value.
So base in log form would be one of the
multiplication values in exponential form.
Then, x in log form would be the value in
exponential form.
Lastly, z in log form would be the other
multiplication value in exponential form.
I made the most sense using this thought process.

An example of this is 5 to the power of 3 times n = Exponents in equations:

125
Formula: 5 to the power of 3 times n = 125

We are supposed to use common knowledge of what

the answer is. So we know that 5 to the power of 3 is
equal to 125. Since we still have to make use of n in
this formula, nothing has to change, meaning we can
put in 1 for n and the formula would be true.

5 to the power of 3 times 1 = 125

5 to the power of 3 = 125
125=125
Compounding Interest:

So this is taking values from a problem and putting

them in as values for the formula.

So for the first handwritten problem, we can see that

we are putting in the year for the last parts of each
equation.

Since the formula says 1 + x we know from growth

and decay that the value should be increasing. So in
the table, we can see that as more time goes on the
higher the value will end up increasing.

Part 2: Exponents and Logs Unit Reflection (4 points)

What did you grapple with during this unit?
What habits of a mathematician did you use?
Having finished the portfolio how prepared do you feel for Fridays test? How can you be more
prepared?

I grappled very little. I feel like the one thing I grappled with was finding the original growth rate after being
given a value for rate; e.g.:p(t)= 4(1.019)^t

I feel like I used Collaborate and Listen the most because I learned from my peers and helped them if they
needed it.

I feel a lot more prepared than I did in the last test. I can be more prepared for this upcoming test by
reviewing this portfolio and past notes and the last test.
