Parents say baby's head severed while being born in Cebu hospital

A Cebu hospital is in hot water anew, this time over allegations that a baby's head was
severed while being delivered there.

Parents of the baby accused staff at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center of
negligence over the incident, GMA Cebu's Gregy Magdadaro and Chona Carreon reported.

But the hospital insisted it was not at fault, adding the baby was already dead while inside its
mother's womb.

The baby's father Renjie Torreon said the last ultrasound taken of the baby on Saturday
showed nothing unusual.

However, he questioned why it took hospital staff 13 hours to inform him his baby had died.

"Nangyari siguro ito noong pag-deliver ng bata, nagtaka kami, baka prinissure nila paghila
ang bata at hindi man lang kami sinabihan. Blind talaga kami sa Vicente Sotto," he said.

At a meeting called by the Department of Health Central Visayas on Monday, the hospital's
officials belied claims the baby's head severed due to its staff's negligence.

The hospital's spokesman Nonoy Mongaya said the baby was already dead while inside its
mother's womb. He added the baby was "half-delivered" as its feet were already out by the
time the mother was brought to the hospital.

The DOH-7 has asked for an incident report from the hospital.

In the meantime, Torreon has asked the Philippine National Police for assistance. He said he
would pursue legal action against the hospital if it does not clear the air on the baby's death.

The same hospital was in the news recently after it was reported that a baby fell on the floor
of its delivery room. The hospital administration has denied the incident happened.

Baby, who slipped through doctor's hands seconds after delivery, dies

A newborn babys fall to the floor immediately after delivery caused bleeding on
the infants brain and a bruise to his scalp but did not cause his death, according to
a coroner.

The babys father, Martin Aguirre, said his son slid out of the doctors hands on to
the ground during delivery on Tuesday at University of Colorado Hospital. The
child's mother has not been named.

Coroner Monica Broncucia-Jordan ruled this week that death was not caused by
the fall but by a genetic condition.

According to 9 News, the coroner's office does not believe the fall had anything to
do with the baby's death because there was no evidence from the autopsy that the
infant had even taken a breath.

The baby also suffered from a disorder Trisomy 18, or Edward's Syndrome - where
the individual has an extra copy of material on chromosome 18.

The condition can result in low birth weight, mental deficiencies and
underdeveloped limbs.

Half of infants with Edward's Syndrome do not survive beyond one week. Some
children have survived until they are teenagers but with serious medical and
developmental problems.

University of Colorado continue to investigate the incident but has not confirmed
the baby slipped on to the floor.

The baby's grandmother Georgia Medina told 9 News she could not get the image
of the baby falling out of her mind.
