Odysseus persuasive essay

Odysseus, the brave, heroic leader of the land of Ithaca. His courageous self

defeated the land of Troy and now rules all; or was he?. Throughout the book he has

climbed obstacles and took risks that would determine his fate. Odysseus has evolved

from being a self centered conceited show off, to a humble, understanding leader for

his land of Ithaca . He has drastically altered himself and realized his true position on

Earth.

In the beginning of the book, Odysseus was extremely arrogant and thought he

was the perfect hero. The Gods did not like how his self confidence was so high. The

Gods then put him through a windy treacherous adventure, making him make the

decision to cheat on his wife with two Goddesses Circe and Calypso. Another flaw

would be on page 464 line 300. He is being forced to tell everyone everything that

happened. He tries to get out of telling them saying it won't bring them joy and that it

brought him little joy. His people think this is 100 percent true, but in reality he

completely gave them a false story. This shows he was unloyal, but gives even more

room for Odysseus to improve and change as a character.

Although he does trip up at times, his changes and how he evolved as a

character over look his previous flaws. On page 256, line 235-245, he is still looking to

blame other people and is not ready to take responsibility. But he also cares about

seeing his mother. He says, Mother why not wait for me. So we can fling our arms

around each other this is showing his change and how he is starting to care for

others rather than only caring for himself.

Another sign of Odysseus evolving as a character would be on page 463 line

254-261. Odysseus states, The more she spoke the more a deep desire for tears

welled up inside his breast. He wept as he held the wife he loved, the soul of loyalty,

in his arms at last. This quote gives off the idea that Odysseus really has evolved and

has understood what he has done.

Lastly, Odysseus and his crew members show that he is a changed man. The

only reason he cheated on his wife twice was to save himself and his crew members

which he cared very dearly about. Although he stayed with Circe for six years. He

shows self-control that he would leave Circes comfortable surroundings and palace,

for the greater good to get his crew and him to Ithaca. He is motivational for his crew

members, he feels a warmth towards his crew mates, and on page 236 line 220,

Odysseus show that he is optimistic, practical, and realistic. This passage portrays

that Odysseus is protective of his crew members because he feels that they are his

brothers. As much as Odysseus shows his love and compassion for his crew

members, he is also very open minded. On page 240, he listens to other people,

which gives off the idea to the reader that he is open minded.
According to Life in Charge Change can help us grow. I have a friend that was

very hyper and immature. As time went on he became more mature and calmed

down. I believe everyone changes and matures throughout time. Odysseus was the

heroic conceded king of Ithaca that drastically changed as a character. Although he

had some flaws, he changed as a character as well as a king. In the beginning of the

book, he was proud and never gave the Gods any credit. As an effect, the Gods

sent him through Hell and back teaching him a lesson each stop of the way. At the

end, it all comes down to Odysseus not only changing on the outside, but as well as

the inside.
