I believe that teachers and schools should use updated
technology to support and engage students so they can achieve their education goals. I also feel that all the stakeholders in the school community should work together to make this possible. I have a vision of training of educators to ensure students gaining the most from technology implementation in the classroom. If educators are unable to implement technology with fidelity and confidence, the student will suffer. Inappropriate implementation is one of the largest digital-divides currently in schools and without addressing it the students miss crucial opportunities to grow with technology (Creighton 2003). I have a vision of training teachers properly and motivating them to use and troubleshoot technology themselves, they will then begin to use technology effectively in the classroom and they will see more engagement and achievement with their students. Effective use is defined as using technology for assignments that are student-centered and push students to reach higher-level thinking rather than for skill- based practice (Creighton 2003)
Technology has the power to unite, to create, and to
encourage learning; however, it must move forward with a concreted plan. Too often schools invest in technology without an effective plan for how it can improve student performance and learning (Creighton, 2003). Technology integration is transforming schools and learning, albeit slowly in many places. All levels of government recognize that 21st learning must include the skills of creating, communicating, and collaborating to solve complex situations (National Plan for Technology in Education, 2015). Providing professional development can help educators gain the comfort needed as well as illustrate examples of how to use the technology in different content areas. To accomplish this schools and districts need to have a technology coach or well-acquainted individual with technology. Technology coaches will use their experience, expertise, and knowledge to assess technology needs, plan and implement technology clinics, support the faculty as they work through implementation, and work for the equitable access for all teachers. This will then be passed onto the students because the educators are comfortable with and well trained in modern technology.
Teachers, administrators and other staff members should
enjoy opportunities to collaborate on teaching activities as well as strategic planning initiatives in a collegial environment. They should be provided with timely, job-embedded technology professional development (Learning Forward, 2011; ISTE, 2012). I feel that as a technology trained professional I will be able to help with instructional innovation that demonstrates student engagement and achievement.
