COURSE OUTLINE

Course Code: NURS 102

Course Name: Anatomy and Physiology

Credit Hours: 3

Course Description: This course will cover body systems and sense organs. This online format utilizes a
variety of teaching and learning strategies that emphasize experiential learning approaches and student
responsibility. Each week two sessions will be covered. Specifically: an overview of that systems general
function; system parts, their specific function and location; relationship with other systems; and common
pathologies including lab and diagnostic tests, signs and symptoms and prognosis of those pathologies. In
addition a health promotion focus is threaded throughout the course.

Pre-requisites: Admission to the Regional Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing Program.

Co-requisites: N/A

o Nervous System
o Sensory System
o Lymphatic System

o Heart and Circulation
o Respiratory System

Pathology
o Mechanisms of disease
Health promotion strategies related to each body system
Cell and tissues
Fluid and electrolytes
Acid Balance
Nutrition

Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

1. Identify and understand the basic human anatomical structures


2. Understand the function of basic human anatomical structures and systems
3. Understand the synergistic relationship between the variety of systems covered
4. Describe the location and function of the major parts of each system
5. Discuss the health promotion strategies pertaining to each of the body systems covered
6. Begin to apply the processes of maintenance to a number of selected common health challenges
(eg. Diabetes, heart disease) as they may pertain to psychiatric/mental health nursing.

Delivery Format: This course is delivered through guided, interactive online learning sessions. Online
learning includes audio lectures, textbook readings, session quizzes, learning activities, interactive additional
resources and anatomy websites.

Course Requirements and Allocation of Marks:


Assessment 1: Midterm Exam 30%
Assessment 2: Final Exam 30%
Assessment 3: Participation (learning activity/forums) 20%
Assessment 4: Session Quizzes 20%

Midterm
The midterm exam may consist of multiple choice and true or false questions and covers the content from
the start of the course to the end of Session 6.

Final
The final exam may consist of multiple choice and true or false questions covering content from the
complete course.

Session Quizzes
Over the duration of the course you will complete 10 quizzes. The purpose of these quizzes is to evaluate
your knowledge of the course content and enables you to identify areas that you need additional work. The
terminology and the information you gain in this course will be used throughout the RDPN program and
your nursing career.

Participation
You will be graded on your online participation. This is through learning activities and forum discussions.
There are corresponding learning activities for each session. These activities enable you to assess how
well you understood the reading and Session content. Questions in Learning Activities should be
completed before each session.
