SPP Pumps Limited products are designed to reduce hazards to safety.
Some hazards cannot be guarded against and the instructions below MUST
be complied with for safe use. These instructions cannot cover all
circumstances. YOU are responsible for safe working.

1.1 SPP Pumps Limited Type AT pumps are designed for installation in the oil
cooling circuits of electrical transformers and converters. Installations can be
either static, or mobile, e.g. locomotive applications. Do not use for any other
purpose without permission from SPP Pumps Limited.

A Pump Data Plate is fitted to each unit and must not be removed. Loss
of this plate could make identification impossible. This in turn could affect
safety and cause difficulty in obtaining spare parts. Should accidental loss
or damage occur, contact SPP Pumps Limited, immediately.

1.2 Check that all personnel installing, operating or maintaining Type AT pumps
are adequately qualified, trained and issued with the correct tools. Limit
access to those persons only.

1.3 The above persons must study the instruction manual BEFORE any work is
done. They must first confirm that the manual is the correct copy by
comparing the serial number on the Pump Data Plate with that on the
manual. Personnel must also comply with all local and industry based
safety instructions and regulations, in addition to those in this manual.

1.4 Always wear ear protection where the equipment noise level exceeds locally
defined safe limits. Use eye and other protection when working with
pressurised systems and hazardous substances. Use any other personal
protection equipment where local rules apply.

1.5 Do NOT wear loose or frayed clothing or jewellery that could catch or
become trapped in any moving parts.

1.6 Note the 'Limits of Product Application - Permissible Use' specified at the
beginning of the manual. If the equipment is operated outside these limits
there will be an increased risk to safety and premature and hazardous pump
failure.

1.7 Do NOT touch surfaces that may be hot. Surfaces known to be hot in

2.3.1 Temporary Storage

If the pump unit is not used immediately store it carefully in a sheltered, dry
location with as uniform a temperature as possible. It must be completely
isolated from vibration. Preferably store the unit in the vertical position.
Ensure that the unit is sufficiently well chocked that it presents no risk either
to the pump itself or to people nearby.

ATTENTION Do not remove the covers fitted to the pipe flanges until immediately
before connection. These provide protection from the ingress of dirt. It is
essential that the pump remains absolutely clean internally.

2.3.2 Long Term Storage

Section 3.0 General Description

3.1 Transformer Oil Pumps (Type AT)

SPP Pumps Limited Type AT pumps are ranges of axial (in-line) and
centrifugal end-suction (elbow) oil pumps designed to pump oil within the
cooling circuits of electrical transformers and converters. These may be
static or mobile, e.g. locomotive traction transformers. The casing material
can be either cast iron or lightweight aluminium.

ATOGA1.CDR

The axial (in-line) pump consists of a pump impeller and driving motor,
mounted on a common shaft, with the transformer oil flowing through the
windings. This eliminates the need for a shaft seal. The oil serves to cool
the motor and lubricate the shaft bearings. Some pump types are also fitted
with an impeller/shaft locking device. Pumps can be mounted vertically or
horizontally, and are both compact and weatherproof.

The centrifugal end suction (elbow) pump has a similar pumpshaft

arrangement except the transformer oil does not flow through the windings.
The motor does, however, remain flooded to provide cooling and lubrication
for the bearings. An end casing is fitted allowing the oil to be drawn in
through the centre of the casing and out through the side. Pumps can be
mounted vertically or horizontally and combined with the elbow arrangement
this gives a wide range of suction/discharge positions.

The pump suction and delivery branches both end in drilled flanges. These
are suitable for bolting directly into the pipework. In some cases the suction

and discharge pipework support the pump; in others lugs, or tapped bosses,
act as mountings.

Pumps with single phase motors usually have the capacitor carried in an
enlarged terminal box, but with larger pumps it may be arranged for
separate mounting.

Pump rotation is counterclockwise when viewed through the suction port

(impeller end). The casing has separate markings showing direction of
rotation and oil flow. Some pumps are also fitted with a visual rotation
indicator.

3.2 Pump Capacity and Performance

Each SPP Pumps Limited Type AT pump is individually tested using

transformer Dielectric Fluid to BS148.

The pump Data plate is stamped with the pump capacity in litres/second at a
stated head in metres. Additionally, the Data plate states the motor full load
current and speed.

3.3 The Pipework System

The pipework layout should be designed and supported so that no forces

and moments are transmitted to the pump flanges, either during installation
or in use (e.g. through thermal expansion). For pumps without mounting
lugs or bosses, the pipework should be capable of fully supporting the pump.

Avoid sharp bends, abrupt changes in pipe sections, etc., particularly close
to the pump.

Section 4.0 Installation

BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO INSTALL, OPERATE OR MAINTAIN A TYPE
'AT' PUMP, READ THIS MANUAL CAREFULLY AND ENSURE THAT THE
CONTENTS ARE FULLY UNDERSTOOD, ESPECIALLY THE
PROCEDURES RELATING TO THE WORK BEING DONE. FAILURE TO
DO SO MAY RESULT IN DAMAGE TO THE PUMP AND RISK TO LIFE.

Our policy is one of continuous improvement and we reserve the right to alter specifications without giving notice.
Page 6

Shearing Hazard
DO NOT put fingers or hands etc. into the suction or discharge outlets.
Keep the protection covers in place until removal is necessary for
installation. Always replace the covers after inspection.

4.1 Initial Inspection for Damage

If any damage is found on receipt, notify the carrier and SPP Pumps Limited.
as soon as possible. Do not use the pump until cleared to do so by SPP
Pumps Limited.

Before installation carefully check that the pump was not damaged during
delivery or storage.

4.2 Oil Circuit Preparation

Make sure the entire oil circuit is perfectly clean and free from moisture and
foreign matter. The motor and bearings are designed for working in clean oil
only. Any contact with contaminants will cause serious damage.

To achieve the necessary cleanliness requirements and to remove any

particle contamination, NEW oil must be filtered into the system and flushed
through the circuit to waste. A witness filter can be fitted to the waste outlet
to determine when the system is clean. The oil in the system must conform
and be maintained to the cleanliness requirements of ISO 4406 level 17/13
for contamination.

4.3 Preparation for Mounting

Before installation, check that the pump mounting location is suitable for
accepting the pump unit, if in doubt refer to installation drawings. Ensure
that the equipment to which the pump is mounted can safely withstand all
static and dynamic loads.

4.4 Pump Preparation

Measure the electrical resistance of the insulation between the motor

windings and the frame. If the reading is under one megohm, dry out the
motor in a warm, dry, clean atmosphere, with a maximum temperature of
110oC.
ATTENTION Do not exceed 110oC or damage may occur to the insulation. Take care

that no damage occurs to the bearings or any other part of the pump
because of the drying process.

Our policy is one of continuous improvement and we reserve the right to alter specifications without giving notice.

Abrasion and Entrapment Hazard

Ensure the pump is electrically isolated. Remove the suction end cover.
DO NOT INSERT HANDS OR FINGERS INTO THE PUMP BRANCHES.
Using a clean probe, carefully check that the impeller rotates freely and
evenly, without jarring. Take care NOT to damage the impeller. Replace
the flange covers if not immediately installing the pump.

4.5 Pump Installation

Both axial flow (in-line) and centrifugal end suction (elbow) pumps
should be mounted using the lugs, or tapped bosses where these are fitted.
The suction and discharge flanges should then be bolted up to the pipework
ensuring no strain is placed on the pump. Use gaskets between the pump
and pipe flanges. Where the pump is not provided with specific mounting
points the suction and discharge pipe flanges are designed to act as
mountings, in turn fully supported by the pipework.

Note: Install the pump with the terminal housing and cover positioned so
that the cable gland is on the underside and the vent hole points
downwards.

Tighten up mounting fasteners to the correct torque for the Strength Grade
and Size of bolts and nuts used. A guide is included in Section 8.0. Correct
pre-loading of fasteners is essential.

4.6 Connecting Electrically

Check that the power supply available is suitable for the pump. Electrical
details are stamped on the Pump Data Plate.

The terminal housing is mounted independently of the terminal block. The

housing can therefore be orientated to give conduit entry to suit individual
requirements. The cable gland entry point should be positioned on the
underside and the vent hole in the cover should point downwards.

Note: Removing the housing will release any oil inside.

Some pumps are fitted with an earth terminal next to the terminal box. Use
this for connecting earth bonding cables.

Our policy is one of continuous improvement and we reserve the right to alter specifications without giving notice.

Section 5.0 Commissioning and Operation

Hazardous Noise
Besides local or site regulations for noise protection, SPP Pumps
Limited recommend the use of Personal Ear Protection equipment in all
enclosed machinery situations and particularly those containing diesel
engines. Ensure that any alarms or warning signals are still audible while
wearing ear defenders. Type AT pumps on their own are not generally
considered to be a noise hazard.

Hazardous Gases, Mists, Sprays and Leaks

Be aware of the hazards relating to the pumped fluid, especially the
danger from inhalation of noxious and toxic gases, skin and eye contact
or penetration. Obtain and understand the hazardous substance
(COSHH) data sheets relating to the pumped fluid and note the
recommended emergency and first aid procedures.

Hot Surfaces
Do NOT touch any surface marked with a HOT symbol either during
running or after stopping, until the unit has cooled down. Be cautious
and aware that surfaces can become hot as a result of pumping hot
fluids or where a fault is starting to develop.

5.1 Commissioning Checks

Ensure the system is filled with oil. Bleed air from the pump by releasing the
uppermost vent plug until air-free oil escapes. Re-tighten the plug.

Note: Type AT pumps are not self-priming and must be flooded to pump
effectively.

Check for any oil leaks. Rectify, if necessary, before continuing.

5.2 Starting

Switch on power supply to the unit.

5.3 During Operation

ATTENTION Check by observation that the pump is running without any

undue noise or vibration. If the pump is fitted with a visual indicator check
that the rotation direction is correct.

Our policy is one of continuous improvement and we reserve the right to alter specifications without giving notice.

5.4 Stopping Procedure

Switch off power supply to motor.

5.5 After Commissioning or Operation

Ensure that the pump is left with all system valves and power supplies set in
the correct mode for future operation.

Recheck the tightness of all mounting fasteners. Check and rectify, if

necessary, any oil leaks.

Section 6.0 Maintenance and Service

6.1 Maintenance

Type AT pumps are glandless and lubricated by the pumped liquid. They
require no regular maintenance other than periodic checks on operating
behaviour (temperature, noise or vibration) and current consumption.

Sample and analyse the system oil for compliance with the maximum
contamination requirement of ISO 4406 17/13. The oil should then be
changed or filtered as indicated by the test results.

Should any service or repairs be needed, these should be done at a SPP

Pumps Limited Service Centre.

Section 7.0 Faults and Remedial Action

Fluid Pressure Jet Hazards
Check and ensure that the pump operates below the Maximum Working
Pressure specified in the manual. Before removing the pump, ensure
all pressure has been discharged and the system drained.

Hazardous Gases, Mists, Sprays and Leaks

Be aware of the hazards relating to the pumped fluid, especially the
danger from inhalation of noxious and toxic gases, skin and eye contact
or penetration. Obtain and understand the hazardous substance
(COSHH) data sheets relating to the pumped fluid and note the

7.3 To remove the pump unit.

Isolate the electrical power supply and position a warning notice to prevent
the supply being accidentally re-energised.

Remove the terminal box cover, tag the supply cables for later reconnection,
and then disconnect.

Close the pump isolating valves in the pipeline. Drain the oil from the pump
by removing the pump drain plug, if fitted. After draining, refit the plug.

Where no drain is provided on the pump, the oil will need to be drained via
the system drain valves. In this case the pump isolating valves should be
open.

Attach lifting slings to the pump unit as described in Section 2, and carefully
take the weight with the lifting device. Take care not to strain the pipework.

Remove the bolts from the pump/pipe flanges and remove the pump unit
from the system. Immediately fit protection covers to the exposed pump and
pipe flanges. Dispose of old flange gaskets in the correct manner. New
gaskets should always be fitted on re-assembly.
