To earn a 1st Dan Black Belt, or ChoDan-Bo rank, in ISA Tae Kwon Do, a candidate must meet the following requirements within 12 continuous months of training since their last test: demonstrate proficiency in the Koryo and Kwan-Gae patterns, all previous stances, strikes, and kicking movements, plus new techniques like forearm strikes, head-butts, and 360-degree jump spin kicks performed in different sequences from horse stance; show increased flexibility; and submit a 15-page typed, double-spaced essay on a martial arts subject.
