SECURITY PURPOSES

Sometime ago we mentioned that for security purposes, the front door of
the Jodo Mission of Hawaii office will be locked. We have had many instances
of intruders coming to the office and the temple and because of this we must
continue this practice.
In addition, we are now closing the outer door to the temple when there
are no services or when a service is being conducted and no one is in the of-
fice. This is being done for security purposes only and for the safety of our
ministers and staff. It is really ashamed that
churches, temples and houses of worship need
to worry about intruders.
If you have business in the office or want to
go to the Nokotsudo or Columbarium, please
do not hesitate to ring the doorbell and some-
one will be more than happy to unlock the door.
We apologize for this inconvenience. There
may be instances when no one is available, i.e.
minister is at a service; a sign is normally at the
front door when he will return. Also, if no one answers the door, please call
the office 949-3995. It could be that a service is being held and no one is in
the office.

On Sunday, January 22, 2017, a General Membership Meeting was held. However,
only 14 members attended. According to our By-Laws, we needed to have at least 25
members present at our General Membership Meeting in order to make any changes to
our By-Laws. The changes needed to be made were mainly to reduce the quorum so the
Board of Directors can continue to make official decisions.
We are requesting, if possible, that all members of Jodo Mission of Hawaii attend the
next General Membership Meeting to be held on Sunday, March 26, 2017, at 10:45 a.m.,
after the Spring Higan Service. Your attendance is very important so please try to attend.
By-Laws Amendment to Jodo Mission of Hawaii:
Revisions to consider are: 1) changing the quorum to the Board of Directors from not
less than 15 to not less than 5 nor more than 30 Directors to be elected biennially for 2
years; 2) Standing Committees to consist of not less than 5 to not less than 3 members,
all to be appointed by the President with the approval of the Board of Directors; and
3) Quorums at General Membership meetings, the presence of [25] to 15 members of the
Mission will constitute a quorum; and at Board of Directors meeting, the presence of [9] to
5 directors will constitute a quorum. PLEASE KEEP THIS DATE, WE WILL NEED YOUR

D e d i c a t i o n B o ard
In preparation of the 125-year anniversary of Jodo Shu in Hawaii, we (your Board of
Directors) would like to honor the past and present members of Betsuin who have made
tremendous contributions toward Jodo Mission of Hawaii today.
As part of the pre celebration, we (your Board) felt it was time to honor selected
members by creating a JODO dedication board to be shared by all other members. These
selected members chosen have sacrificed many hours of adversity and success of build-
ing this organization.
Our other intent of presenting this honor board is to assure that the next and forth
coming generations will continue their legacy by attending services and church functions.
We all know that the original members are in the Pure Land or are all aged seniors and to
carry on their legacy we need to replace them with new ideas and goals. We cannot afford
to let their hard work be forgotten but be carried forward to the next generation.
Each selected member to the JODO dedication board will be engraved onto a brass
name plate which will be attached to the board covered by an outer clear glass plate

Spring Higan-e Service

The word Higan literally means the other shore in Japanese. One
shore represents this world which we are in, and the other shore Higan
represents Amida Buddhas Pure Land. The river represents the bad
mind we all possess. The concept is that we practice the teaching to
reach the other shore across the river.
We have two Higan seasons in a year. One in the spring, the other in autumn, as Higan is
held during the week of the spring and autumn equinox. Shan Tao, one of the high ranking
priests of Jodo Buddhism in China said that the sun sets due west during the equinox thus it is
a good opportunity to think about Buddhas Pure Land which exists far away in the west, as
well as appreciate our ancestors who are also there.
Please join us in crossing the river to the other shore as we think about Buddhas Pure
Land and respect for our ancestors. Our Higan Service will be held:

Natural Way. Terry Shintani, M.D. will be our guest speak-
er. He is a well known preventive medicine doctor. Imagine a
society in which health improved so much that the need for
medication was substantially reduced and the cost of health care
declined and life span increased each year. Come and listen to
Dr. Shintani talk about Sick of Being Sick, Get Healthy the
Natural Way.

Sunday, March 19, 2017 at 10 a.m.: A Gift for Your Family: The
Importance of Advance Care Planning. Two nurses: Joy Kurihara, GNP
(Geriatric Nurse Practitioner and volunteer speaker with Kokua Mau) and
Patricia W. Nishimoto, DNS (Adult Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist at Tri-
pler Army Medical Center and a volunteer speaker with Kokua Mau) will come
to talk about conversations that involve the whole family regarding the ones
care wishes which eliminates the family stress. Families who have not heard
the wishes of Mom or Dad or Grandfather or Grandmother, may have problems
deciding what their wishes are whereas if you know their wishes, the wishes
can be honored and family crisis can be prevented.
Please bring your parents, grandparents, adult sons, daughters,
friends to this interesting session. A follow-up session will be held on Sun-
day, April 30, 2017 at 10 a.m.

Sunday, January 29, 2017 at 10 a.m.: On Sunday, January 29,
2017, Jody Mishan of Hawaii Alzheimers Disease Initiative, UH
Center on Aging, came to speak to us on Brain Health. This
was a most interesting subject. She used the computer, projector
and screen and passed out a lot of reading material
since we gave her 20 minutes to speak. Ms. Mishan indicated that
not only is eating healthy, exercising, taking care of your health,
getting enough sleep each night but it is important to learn new
things and socialize with family, friends and the community.
She indicated that its wonderful that people come to church each
Sunday and meet with other people. This interaction is important. This is all
part of keeping our brain healthy.

 ShinnenkaiNew Years Party
At Jodo Mission of Hawaiis Shinnenkai or New Years Party held on January 22, 2017,
there were no Hyakusai members (100 year olds) who attended. Maybe next year. If you did
not attend the New Years party, you missed a very nice party. There were lucky number priz-
es, and of course BINGO game and wonderful prizes.
The food was delicious! Aki Nishiyama and the ladies did a
wonderful job of nishime, miso tako, sushi, stuffed hasu, fried
Mahimahi, fried chicken, gunlo mein, vegetable kamaboko tempura,
potato salad and wonderful deserts! Jodo Mission normally invites
the many instructors who teach
classes at Jodo Mission. Clayton
Naluai, the Aikido instructor in-
vited one of his students to our
New Years party. The student
asked if he could be invited
again next year because the
food was so delicious and there
were foods on the buffet table that he never ate before but
to be invited would depend on Mr. Naluai.
For entertainment we had koto playing by Sophie Narashiba and her instructor Darin
Miyashiro and his wife Mika. Strider Parasso from our Sunday School sang with the koto
playing background.

Thank you everyone who came to the New Years party. Please join us again next
year for our annual New Years Party (its fun, lots of good food and you get to meet
other members of Jodo Mission of Hawaii)!

Den Den Mushi

Four students from Shukutoku University Panel
Theater came to perform on Sunday, February 12,
2017. The group included Yumi Kato, Risa
Katsuki, Tomomi Kuroe and Kana Sukegawa.
After their visit to the Betsuin, they went to Maui
and visited Lahaina, Wailuku and Kahului Jodo
Missions. They also visited schools and care
homes while on Maui.
They told a wonderful story of the Komatsuna
Japanese vegetable and how it got its name. See page 6 for more photos. Page 5
 What is Perpetual Memorial Den Den Mushi (contd)
Service? (Eitaikyo)
This record of a perpetual memorial service and
is called Eitaikyo in Japanese. When the date of
death occurs for a person listed on this record, the
ministers pray for that individual during the morn-
ing service. The prayers will continue each year for
as long as Jodo Mission exists.
Anyone can be included in it. You may put your
own name on the list, too. This also helps when it
is difficult to have memorial services. We also wel-
come you to attend the morning service at 930am.
