Lopez, Quezon

Development of Computer Literacy Program for Grade Seven Students of Lopez National
Comprehensive High School

I. Introduction.

Today, computers play a big role in education especially in developing countries like the

Philippines.

In the IT age, every field of study calls for various extend of computer knowledge

and productivity skills, such as writing, presentation, design, calculation, simulation,

analysis, and so on. To equip our students with these fundamental IT skills for their

study, research and work after graduation.

This research focuses on using the computer as an object of instruction or most

commonly known as - Computer Literacy.

The use of technology in education can no longer be thought of as a choice to

be made on the part of teachers, nor can it be considered an add-on to the curriculum

or reserved for special occasions in the classroom. It has been argued that there is a

gap that continues to widen between the types of knowledge and skills students learn in

the Philippine Public Schools and the actual types of knowledge and skills they need to

be successful in the 21st century workforce and global economy.

The researcher, through a review of the relevant literature, address the underlying

issues that necessitate the development of this program:

1. Research shows that there are important benefits to be gained from the use of

technology in learning and teaching.

2. Technology should be incorporated into teaching pedagogy so that students

will not only effectively acquire a second language but will also develop electronic

literacy skills.

3. Research shows that technology in language learning is not being used to its

full potential and that inadequate learner training are some of the main reasons

for this.

Problem and Setting

It is observed that students from Lopez National Comprehensive High School

lack computer skills and knowledge for many reasons. This program will be integrated

through the exploratory course in Grade Seven, particularly when they reach the ICT

exploratory subject which is Computer Hardware Servicing (CHS), which will be injected

through their ICL time once a week. Under this program, students will be taught the

basic computer literacy skills, such as word processing and presentation making; under

their 8-day-training.
