Intro d uctio n
The startup track mode is designed to ena ble you to identify a failing
subsystems while the printer is initializing. Startup track mode provides a
specific indication of which p articular subsystem is failing. This mode is not
intended for use by end-users.
W hile the printer is initializing, the front p anel will display a sequence of
squares in the last two columns. Each position in the last two columns
represents a number, all the numbers represented are shown below. To find
the failing subsystem, a dd the numbers together that have a square and refer
to the list of numbers with their associated subsystems on p a ge 2 0.
In the example below the printer is initializing and the front p anel has
stopped and is displaying squares in positions 1 6, 32, 6 4 and 4. Add these
four values together and you get 1 1 6, refer to the list on p a ge 2 0, and we
can see the failing subsystem is the Trailing C a ble.
If the display re aches 1 9 1, you will need to turn O n the printer from the
power button. If all the subsystems p ass the initialization, the printer will
initialize normally and go to the re a dy status.

Intro d uctio n
The System M aintenance Utility is designed to assist the customer with
common maintenance tasks for the printer and also to resolve common
problems that they may encounter.
Since the design of the System M aintenance Tool is different between the
Designjet 1 2 0 / 1 2 0nr and Designjet 1 3 0 / 1 3 0, this cha pter will explain
how to use the tool for e ach product sep arately:
Explanation on how to use the System M aintenance Utility for the
Designjet 1 2 0,1 2 0nr is found on Pa ge 2 .
Explanation on how to use the System M aintenance Utility for the
Designjet 3 0, 3 0n, 1 3 0, 1 3 0nr is found on Pa ge 3 .
2 A printer selector window opens - select your printer from the list.
W h y ca lib r a te colo r?
C a lib r a te color performs a maintenance function to ensure color
consistency. If you calibrate correctly, the colors printed on printers with
different printhe a ds will look very similar.
W h en d o I ca lib r a te color?
It is recommended that you ca lib r a te color every time you replace a
printhe a d or when you perceive color degra d ation on the printouts. There is
no need to perform this operation e ach time you print. The results of the
color calibration will be a pplied to all print jobs that follow, even if you
power off the printer.
Perform color calibration if you print with the regular hp designjet 1 2 0
printer driver, which was included with the printer or which you downloa ded
from the W eb. If you use a PostScript driver such as Adobe PS or Laser Writer
to print through a PostScript RIP provided by HP or another third-p arty
comp any, the results of ca lib r a te colo r will not be a pplied to your print
jobs. In this case, refer to your PostScript RIP documentation for information
on how to perform color calibration.
H o w d o I ca lib r a te color?
You have to ca lib r a te color for every Pa per Type that requires color
consistency. For example, if you require consistent colors on glossy p a per
and on he avy weight coated p a per, you must perform one color calibration
for the former and another for the latter Pa per Type.
W hen you want to calibrate color, remember to select the Print Q uality
option that you are going to use to print. For example, if you want to print
with the High Resolution option, select High Resolution before performing the
color calibration.

A lig n Printh e a ds
A lig n p rinth e a ds performs a maintenance function with the printhe a ds.
Proper alignment insures correct registration between ink colors while
printing. This is only recommended if you are experiencing problems with
print quality.
Before you continue, ple ase verify that three sheets of p a per are loa ded in
the default tray. If the printhe a d alignment fails on the first attempt, the
printer will retry the alignment twice.

Cle a n Printh e a ds
Cle a n p rinth e a ds helps maintain proper operation of all no z zles in the
printhe a ds. This is only recommended if you are experiencing problems with
print quality such as b anding.
Three levels of cleaning are available: soft, medium and hard. As a first step, the
soft cleaning should be used. If you still experience the same image problems,
then select medium. H ard cleaning should only be used as a last resort.
Before cle aning the printhe a ds, first check the maximum recovery level
alre a dy performed on the printhe a ds. If hard level (Recovery Level 3) has
alre a dy been performed, then do not try performing hard level a g ain. The
M aximum Recovery Level can be seen on the Printer Information p a ge in the

U p d a te Fir m w a re
U p d a te fir m w a re upd ates the built-in software of the printer. The upd ate
process will check the printer's version with the latest version availa ble from
HP. Before trying this utility, first make sure that you have an internet
connection.
The first step will be to check if newer printer software is availa ble. If newer
software is availa ble, then follow the instructions in the window in order to
upgra de the printer software.
If newer printer software is not availa ble, then this messa ge will be displayed
Print Test Pa g e
Print test p a g e provides two dia gnostic p a ges for printing. The following
test p a ges are availa ble:
Ima ge Q uality Dia gnostic p a ge.
Skew Dia gnostic p a ge.
These commands only print the dia gnostic p a ges and do not provide
analysis of the results. A full troubleshooting process is availa ble using the
tro u blesh o otin g command under the W e b Ser vices option.
C a lib r a te Pa p er Fee d
C alibrate p a per feed is used to a djust the printer p arameters for use with
different types of print media. This only affects the physical movement of
p a per and does not affect the color calibration profiles.
O nce the Accuracy C alibration has been printed, rotate the p a ge and

Reset Jetdirect C a r d
Use this function to reset the HP Jetdirect c ard configuration to the factory
defaults. This should only be used if the HP Jetdirect card is not responding
and no other recovery method works.
Any user configuration information, for example the IP a ddress, will be lost.
In this c ase the syste m m aintenance utility will not be a ble to communicate
with the printer using the network.

You have to ca lib r a te colo r for every Pa per Type that requires color
consistency.

H a r d EEPR O M reset
This utility allows you to reset the EEPR O M inside the Printer. A hard
EEPR O M reset is O NLY recommended when you need to install a used
Electronics Module in a different Printer. This is because there is a
discrep ancy between the values of the C arria ge EEPR O M and the
Electronics Module EER O M and since the values of the Electronics Module
EEPR O M are incorrect, a hard EEPR O M reset will empty the Electronics
Module EEPR O M. This will then force the Electronics Module EEPR O M to
collect the values from the C arria ge EEPR O M when the Printer is next
powered up.
1 Hold the power button down and press the cancel button three tim es and
the resume button fo ur tim es.

To prevent d ama ge to the Printer circuits from high-volta ge electrostatic discharge (ESD):
1. Do not we ar clothing that is subject to static build-up.
2. Do not handle integrated circuits (ICs) in carpeted are as.
3. Do not remove an IC or a printed circuit assembly (PC A) from its conductive fo am p a d or
conductive p acka ging until you are re a dy to install it.
4. G round (e arth) your body while disassembling and working on the Printer.
5. After removing a cover from the Printer, attach an e arthing (ground) le a d between the PC A
common and e arth ground. Touch all tools to e arth ground to remove static charges before
using them on the Printer.
6. After removing any PC A from the Printer, place it on a conductive foam p a d or into its
conductive p acka ging to prevent ESD d ama ge to any ICs on the PC A .
