Language Arts is one of the component in the teaching and learning of English
language applied in Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Rendah (KSSR) syllabus. This has
introduced to the teacher on teaching students with variety of resources on conducting
an effective classroom lesson through arts, which allows the students to express their
ideas and appreciate the values of learning language (Donoghue, 2008).
Next, Language Arts helps to fulfil the students need. Sometimes, students
wanted to express themselves. One way of allowing them to do that is using arts in
expressing their mind (Luongo, 2001). Student loves to do activity in their learning
session. Therefore, teacher could plan a lesson that allows the students to do the activity
as well as expressing themselves. One activity that can be conducted is through poetry
which some students can express themselves through reciting a poem. Other activity
such as colouring and story telling can also be conducted in the classroom to meet the
students need in expressing themselves. Thus, students are able to express themselves
through Language Arts activity.
Lastly, integrating Language Arts in the Malaysian primary ESL classroom helps
in developing students cognitive and communicative ability as stated in the Irish National
Teachers Organisation (2009) discussion document. Language Arts enable the students
to appreciate the values of language where they are able to creatively design their
creative works in acquiring the knowledge of English language. Activity such as create
drama, singing a song, and reciting a poem are the examples of creative works which
can be created by the students and develop their communication skills among their
friends while learning English language (Wellhousen & Crowther, 2004).
