I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes)


- The third-grade students will be able to analyze a character by writing a letter to the chosen character.

- In this lesson, the teacher will review the author study activities from the previous days. The
teacher will brainstorm ideas with the students of what they can write about to their character
choice. The teacher will then go over the format of a letter such as the heading, body and
signature. The students will then follow the same format and write a letter to the character of their
choice. Then, the students will complete and exit slip to end the author study.

IV. Implementation

A. Introduction
- The teacher will begin by reviewing the previous activities of the author study.
- The teacher will talk about some of the books Oliver Jeffers has written and which
books the students enjoyed the most.
- The teacher will put up the anchor chart to show how to format a letter.

B. Development
- "We are talking about how to write a letter because you will choose a character from one of
Oliver Jeffers books and write a letter to that character."
- On the board, the teacher will brainstorm ideas with the students about what to write to
the character.
- "Now that we have some ideas on what to write about, let's learn how to format our letter."
- The teacher will review the anchor chart.
- "The heading goes in the top right corner of your paper. It includes the date."
- "The greeting is the line under the heading and all the way to the left. This always
starts Dear (Insert Name).
- "The body of the letter is everything you are writing to that person. You must
always indent the body paragraph.
- "Now, the closing is slightly to the right of the page and you can close by writing
sincerely."
- "Last, your signature (your name) goes underneath the closing statement."
- "I will leave this on the board for you to reference while you write your letters. I expect them to
be in this exact format since you can use the chart."
- The teacher will have the students take out a piece of paper to brainstorm what they want to write
about for 5 minutes.
- The teacher will pass out the paper for the letters and students can work on their writing for 15
minutes.
- "In your letter, I am looking for the correct format and at least five well - written
sentences. "
- The teacher will walk around and observe while the students work.

C. Closure
- The teacher will ask students if they would like to share their letters.
- The teacher will give the students an exit slip about the concepts covered in this unit.
