Scope and Limitations:

This study focuses on the utilization of rice straw besides being used as soil conditioner and
fertilizer. For the determination of the physical characteristics of the briquettes, the study is limited to the
determination of the calorific value, its ignition time, and burning time. The independent variable is the
composition and ratio of charcoal to binder, 85% of the briquette is composed of the rice straw charcoal
and 15% is composed of the binder. The extraneous variable is the different binders being used (clay,
molasses, and starch).

Expected Results:

It is expected to plot a diagram of rice straw charcoal briquettes as a function of the binders used
(clay, molasses, and starch). And to recognize and scheme which binder is most effective to use for
briquetting with the given parameters and the tests for its physical properties which are its calorific value,
ignition and burning time. And the results to show a significant correlation between the usage of different
kinds of binders with the physical properties being tested.
