Portable Display Farming (PDF): Empty Plastic Gallons, Used

PVC Pipes, used tires and Other Industrial Recyclable Materials

Engineered to Utilize as Plant Boxes forPlants/Vegetables to
Beautify and Make Vacant Concrete School Premises Productive

A. Introduction

Part of school development and an element to provide quality education to the

pupils is to improve the physical facilities of the school. Construction of additional school
buildings and other premises are being done to answer the needs of fast growing
population of learners. With these additional facilities; school grounds, gardens and other
open spaces for auxiliary purposes are being sacrificed. Spaces for planting decrease due
to cementing of grounds to serve as path walks.
Plants and trees provide natural setting for learning providing cleaner air as well
as beauty in the surroundings.
To utilize the concrete spaces in the school premises for planting and to add
highlights to these dull places, the undersigned engineered a portable garden. She
introduces an innovation known as Portable Display Farming (PDF).

B. Background

The undersigned was assigned as one of the coordinators for school beautification
committee and also assisting in GulayansaPaaralan. She noticed that the focus of
gardening was only in that compound space at the back of the classrooms. She wanted to
extend the garden in the entire school facilities even in the path walks with open spaces.
The undersigned believes that through her innovation, even concrete spaces can be used
as place for planting and will also add beauty to the school surroundings.

C. Portable Display Farming (PDF): Empty Oil Plastic Gallons, Used PVC Pipes, Used
Tires and Other Industrial Recyclable Materials Engineered to Utilize as Plant
Boxes for Plants/Vegetables to Beautify and Make Vacant Concrete School Premises
Productive

There is a worldwide information campaign regarding climate change and various

programs from the government are being implemented to help in solving this issue.
Cataning Elementary School supports every project of the government to protect
and improving the present state of the environment.
This years beautification campaign of the school promotes the use of recycled
materials for decoration. Every grade level are to userecycled materials such as used tires,
empty plastic bottles of different sizes, indigenous materials, etc.
The undersigned wanted a dcor that serve purpose other than beautification,
which would also help the environment and the people too.So she collected empty plastic
gallons, used PVC (Polyvinyl carbon) pipes, empty electric wire container and used tires.
These canbe usedas materials for potable plant boxes for vegetables and can be placed
anywhere in the school premises even in concrete open places.
She mounted three to four stacks of plastic gallons to a PVC pipe where she
planted varieties of vegetables that fit to them and distribute the so called PDF initially
to Grade IV corridors and later to different strategic places of the school. Used tires were
cut and constructed to different designs making sure that that they will be positioned in
such a way that vegetables can be planted.
Portable Display Farming (PDF) can also be interconnected depending on the
purpose design and availability of spaces. It can also be attached to water hose to evenly
water the plantsbecause the PVC pipes have holes acting like fountain for easy watering
of the plants.

D. Problems Encountered and Solutions

Problems Solutions

Used a sturdier or heavier base.
The stability of the pipes which hold the
containers.

E. Significant Insights

Two major environmental problems: waste management and global warming,

both need immediate solutions. Knowing that plastics take 50 year before they
decompose, we should think of ways that will not only illuminate all of them but we
should learn new ways of recycling them making them beneficial and not just trash.
Recyclable materials can be an extension of our garden and can also create gardens on
concrete spaces. Beautifying our surroundings can also be a source of food and income as
well.

F. Proposal/Recommendations

Encourage the principal, teachers and parents to adopt the innovation.

Discuss the importance of fighting global warming and recycling.
Stress out the benefits of having PDF in schools or in the community.
Try having all empty spaces with Portable Display Farming (PDF) to generate
income.
If funds are available, we can create a number of PDFs that are linked to each other
and connected to the water system making it easy to water the plants/ vegetables.
