A healthy diet is made up of different food groups, which give your body nutrients to grow, repair, and work well.
Carbohydrates are the main source of energy for your body. They also provide fibre, which is important in digestive health. Carbohydrates should make up around a third of your daily
food intake.
Foods that are high in carbohydrates include rice, bread and pasta. For a healthy option, choose brown, wholegrain or wholemeal varieties.
Protein
Protein is important for your body to grow and repair. You may need more protein than usual to help your body heal during and after your treatment for lymphoma.
Foods high in protein include meat, fish, eggs, beans and lentils. For a healthy option, choose lean, grilled cuts of meat. Red meat is a good source of iron and zinc as well as protein.
The World Cancer Research Fund reports a link between eating a lot of red meat and some cancers (eg bowel cancer). Limit the amount of cooked red meat you eat to 70g per day.
Aim for at least 2 portions of fish a week; 1 of these should be an oily fish such as salmon. If you are pregnant, current NHS guidance is not to eat more than 2 portions of oily fish a week.
You should also include dairy products (made from milk) in your diet. Dairy provides calcium (important for bone health), zinc (a mineral with various functions, including helping wounds heal)
and protein. Milk, yoghurts and cheese are good sources of dairy. For a healthy option, choose non full-fat varieties and use low-fat spreads instead of butter, which is high in saturated fat. If
you are trying to gain weight, however, you might find it helps to eat some of the higher fat options.
Fat
Fat is an important source of energy and provides useful vitamins. Unsaturated (good) fats can help keep your heart healthy and lower your cholesterol. Foods such as avocados, brazil nuts
and oily fish are examples of sources of unsaturated fats. You can also include these types of good fat in your diet if you cook with oils or use oils as a dressing.
You should limit your intake of saturated (sat) fats. This type of fat is found in foods such as butter, meat, cakes, and many processed foods, eg sausages and crisps. Its fine to have a little bit
of saturated fat women should eat no more than 20g a day; men should eat no more than 30g a day. Too much of this type of fat increases health risks including heart disease and stroke.

Fruits and vegetables are good sources of vitamins and minerals. Vitamins and minerals have many different functions, including keeping your immune system, bones, teeth and skin healthy.
Minerals are important for the strength of your teeth and bones. They also help change the food you eat into energy you use.
The recommended intake of fruit and vegetables is at least 5 portions (80g) per day. Examples of what counts as one portion are:

other medication.
Fibre
Fibre helps to keep your heart healthy and your digestive system working well. It is found in foods that come from plants, for example fruits, vegetables, cereals and potatoes. Although it is not
classed as a separate food group, you should aim to eat 30g of fibre each day.

If you have a good appetite and are eating well, use the Eatwell plate as a guide. The Eatwell plateshows in what proportion various food groups should make up your daily diet. The key points

We offer some suggestions to help with eating problems that commonly affect people who are living with lymphoma, including guidance on food safety if you are neutropenic. We also have
some basic advice if you have a sore mouth as a side effect of treatment. Speak to a member of your medical team before making any changes to your diet.
Some medicines and treatments for lymphoma can lower your appetite or make you feel full soon after you start to eat. This could be a side effect of chemotherapy. It may also happen if you
have lymphoma in your gut or if you have radiotherapy to the gut.
If you find it difficult to eat enough, you may find the following tips helpful:
Drink at least 30 minutes before your food to avoid filling up right before you eat.
Choose high energy foods (eg omelettes, cheese and biscuits) over foods that are filling but low in energy (eg salads and soups).
Fortify your meals with high energy foods such as olive oil, cream, cheese or milk powder.
Weight loss
If you have lost weight during your treatment, you can boost your energy (calories) intake in the following ways:
Nausea (feeling or being sick) is a common side effect of many chemotherapy drugs. You may also feel nauseous with radiotherapy. To help with nausea:
add ginger to your diet, for example in the form of ginger beer, ginger tea, ginger biscuits, or root ginger, as ginger may reduce nausea
eat food cold or cook it in a microwave to minimise the smell of food that can worsen nausea.
Changes in taste
A side effect of some medications, including chemotherapy and some biological therapies, is that food tastes different. Many people say food tastes bland. Others describe a metallic taste, or
find that food tastes more salty or bitter than usual.
Flavouring your food might help if your food starts to taste different. Herbs, spices, sauces and chutneys can flavour savoury food. A fruit coulis could help to flavour puddings.
You might find sharp tasting fizzy drinks (eg lemonade or ginger beer) more enjoyable than milder flavours. Energy drinks are often high in calories (energy) but contain very few other nutrients.
A more nourishing option is a milk-based drink which provides protein, vitamins and minerals as well as energy.
Many people stop enjoying the taste of tea and coffee during their treatment for lymphoma. If this is the case for you, you could try herbal teas.
During your treatment, you may be more at risk of infection, such as oral thrush, which can make food taste unpleasant. To avoid infection, keep good mouth care. Brush your teeth regularly
with a soft bristled brush and use an alcohol-free mouthwash.
The effects of treatment on your taste may change over time. Taste changes at the start of your treatment may not be the same as the taste changes you experience later on in your treatment.
For this reason, keep trying different foods throughout your treatment, even if you didnt like their taste at the start of it.
Diarrhoea
Diarrhoea can be a side effect of some treatments for lymphoma. It is important to speak with your doctor or nurse who may be able to give you some medication to help with it. You may find
the following helpful:
Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. As well as water, soup, jelly and ice lollies can be a source of fluids.
Be aware of symptoms of dehydration eg passing urine less often or passing only small amounts of dark coloured urine.
Ask your dietitian, doctor or nurse if you need to change your diet to manage your diarrhoea.
Constipation
Constipation is a side effect of some chemotherapy drugs, antiemetics (anti-sickness medications) and pain medication (especially morphine-based ones, such as codeine).
To ease constipation, increase the amount of fibre in your diet. You can find tips to help you do this on the NHS Choices website. Drinking plenty of fluids and taking gentle exercise may also
help. Talk to your doctor or nurse about suitable laxatives.
You may have heard that it is unsafe to eat grapefruit while you are having treatment for lymphoma.
Some foods affect how well drugs work. Before they can take effect, drugs first need to be broken down and absorbed into your bloodstream. Proteins called enzymes, particularly one known
as CYP3A, are important in this process. Foods that block the action of such enzymes mean that less of the drug is absorbed into your body.
Grapefruit can block CYP3A. You may, therefore, be advised to avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while you are having treatment for lymphoma. Other fruits that may block
CYP3A include Seville orange, blackberry, pomegranate and some varieties of grape.
A healthy diet is just as important once you complete your treatment for lymphoma as it is during treatment. The benefits of good nutrition include:

Throughout your Hodgkin lymphoma treatment, our registered dietitians are available to work with you and the other members of your care team, including a
gastroenterologist and naturopathic clinician, to help you combat various side effects so you stay strong and avoid treatment delays or interruptions. Side effects may
include:
Nausea: We may recommend eating a low-fat, bland diet of cold foods, ginger products, peppermint or wearing sea bands to combat nausea.
Diarrhea: We may suggest a BRAT diet of bananas, white rice, applesauce, and toast to help reduce irritation to the digestive tract, and water soluble fiber
supplements (e.g., pectin) to help form firmer stool.
Constipation: To relieve constipation, we may recommend you increase your fiber intake and stay hydrated, including drinking warm liquids (e.g., prune juice).
Fatigue: To increase your energy levels, we may suggest you try small, frequent meals of protein-rich foods, and decrease your sugar intake.
Anemia: To boost your red blood cell count, we may recommend certain iron and folic acid supplements.
Nutrition plays an important role for Hodgkin lymphoma patients who undergo a stem cell transplant. After the transplant, your white blood cell counts may be lower, making you
more susceptible to infection. A strict adherence to food safety is important at this time.
For a period of time following the transplant, your dietitian may recommend a neutropenic diet. Diet restrictions may include avoiding raw/undercooked foods (e.g., meats,
seafood, eggs, vegetables or unpeeled fruits) or unpasteurized dairy products.
Also, since vitamin D is important for Hodgkin lymphoma patients, your dietitian may work with your doctor to have your vitamin D levels checked and may recommend vitamin
D supplements if needed.

commercially prepared or homemade nutrient-dense beverages or foods can improve the
intake of energy and nutrients.
For survivors who are unable to meet their nutritional needs through above measures
and who are at risk of becoming malnourished, other means of nutritional support may be

With compelling evidence against the use of select supplements in certain oncology
populations, health care professionals and survivors need to proceed with caution.25
Existing evidence strongly suggests that exercise is not only safe and feasible during
cancer treatment, but that it can also improve physical functioning, fatigue, and multiple
aspects of quality of life
may need to exercise at a lower intensity and/or for a shorter duration during their
treatment, but the principal goal should be to maintain activity as much as possible.
Some clinicians advise certain survivors to wait to determine their extent of side effects
with chemotherapy before beginning an exercise program.
For older individuals and those with bone metastases or osteoporosis, or significant
impairments such as arthritis or peripheral neuropathy, careful attention should be given
to balance and safety to reduce the risk of falls and injuries.
Adequate protein intake is essential during all stages of cancer treatment, recovery,
long-term survival, and living with advanced disease.
The best choices to meet protein needs are foods that are also low in saturated fat (eg,
fish, lean meat, skinless poultry, eggs, nonfat and low-fat dairy products, nuts, seeds, and
legumes).
High sugar intake has not been shown to increase the risk or progression of cancer.
However, sugars (including honey, raw sugar, brown sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, and
molasses) and beverages that are major sources of these sugars (such as soft drinks and
many fruit-flavored drinks) add substantial amounts of calories to the diet and thus can
promote weight gain.
In addition, most foods that are high in added sugar do not contribute many nutrients to
the diet and often replace more nutritious food choices. Therefore, limiting the
consumption of products with added sugar is recommended.
Evidence from both observational studies and clinical trials suggests that
dietarysupplements are not likely to improve prognosis or overall survival after the
diagnosis of cancer, and may actually increase mortality.
Before supplements are prescribed or taken, all attempts should be made to obtain
needed nutrients through dietary sources
Keep all aspects of food preparation clean, including washing hands before food
preparation and washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly.
Use special care in handling raw meats, fish, poultry, and eggs.
Thoroughly clean all utensils, countertops, cutting boards, and sponges that
have contact with raw meat; keep raw meats and ready-to-eat foods separate.
When eating in restaurants, avoid foods that may have potential bacterial
contamination such as items from salad bars; sushi; or raw or undercooked meat,
fish, shellfish, poultry, and eggs.
Avoid raw honey, milk, and unpasteurized fruit juice, and choose pasteurized
versions instead.
If there is any question or concern about water purity (eg, well water), it can be
checked for bacterial content by contacting your local public health department.

Hand washing
Wash your hands thoroughly in warm, soapy water before and after handling food. Pay
special attention to the areas between your fingers and around your fingernails as this is
where germs can gather. You should also remove any items of jewellery (eg rings, watches
and bracelets) before washing your hands as bacteria can sit under these.
Dry your hands with a separate towel or kitchen paper rather than a tea towel.
Make sure your hands are completely dry before handling food. Germs spread more
easily when your hands are wet.
Wash and change utensils and chopping boards between preparing raw and cooked
foods. This helps to prevent cross-contamination. If possible, have three chopping boards
Replace kitchen cloths and sponges regularly, or wash them and let them dry before
you use them again.
If you are washing by hand, let cutlery and utensils drip-dry. This way is more hygienic
than drying with a tea towel.
Wash and scrub root vegetables well (eg potatoes and carrots) to remove traces
of soil.
Store raw chicken away from other food, chilled on the bottom shelf of the fridge.
Wash anything that touches raw chicken in hot water and with an antibacterial cleaner.
This includes utensils, chopping boards and your hands.
Before eating, cut through the thickest part of the chicken to check that its
cooked throughout; the juices should run clear. All meats should be steaming hot with no pink
or red colour inside.
Leftovers
Cool any leftovers at room temperature and then store them in the fridge. It is safest to
transfer them to the fridge within 12 hours.
Dont re-heat food more than once. Dont re-heat rice at all.
Eating out
Check the food hygiene standard of the caf, restaurant or pub where you want to eat.
You can check food hygiene rating scores on the Food Standards Agencys website. If you are
in England or Northern Ireland, you might also see a sticker in the window that
states their rating.
Check that food is cooked all the way through. It should be steaming hot. Dont eat
food that has been kept warm under heat lamps.
Avoid buying ice cream from parlours and vans. Instead, buy wrapped ice creams or
ice lollies from a shop.
If you are severely neutropenic, it is best to avoid barbecues. Check with your medical team if
you are unsure.
Keep all food in the fridge until you need to use it.
Be sure that the barbecue coals are hot enough to cook food properly. They should be
glowing red.
Cut the meat to check it is cooked through. If its pink inside, then cook it for longer.
Move food around the barbecue and turn it often to help cook it evenly.
Keep raw and cooked foods on separate plates and handle them with different utensils.
Wash salads, fruit and vegetables properly before you eat them.
