Course Description:
This course introduces students to the basics of industrial hygiene and toxicology. The main principles
or framework of the industrial hygiene and toxicology which are anticipation, recognition, evaluation
and control of workplace hazards are covered. The course also introduces students to the concepts of
toxicology and the basics of risk assessment and how both are used to set up occupational health
standards and regulations. The class discussion will focus on a variety of occupational hazards,
including but not limited air contaminants, chemical hazards, biological hazards and physical hazards,
such as radiation, heat and cold stress.
Course Content:
The course is an introduction to the general principles of industrial hygiene and toxicology, including
relative toxicology and assessment of risk. It discusses how hazards, including chemicals, in workplace
may affect target human organs and systems. The course explores physical hazards (noise or sound
pressure, temperature extremes, radiation), and biological hazards (microorganisms, etc.) encountered in
the workplace and discusses how to control or prevent workers exposure to these variety of hazards.
Course Objectives:
1. Describe the basic principles or framework of industrial hygiene and toxicology, i.e., the
anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of hazards in the workplace.
2. Describe the provisions of federal, state and industry regulations and guidelines regarding
worker health on the job.
3. Apply the fundamental concepts of industrial hygiene, such as toxicology and risk assessment, in
the work environment, including standards, regulations and controls.
4. Describe specific environmental factors or stresses in the workplace and their potential health
effects.
5. Demonstrate proper methods in the use and care of IH instrumentation and PPE.

Exams:
Students will take three exams: Exam # 1 (09/23); Exam # 2 (11/18) and Final Exam (12/09 at 6:00
pm or as per university exam schedule - http://www.selu.edu/admin/rec_reg/exam_sch/). These three
exams are intended to measure students progress and to provide a basis for their final grade. Each of
these three exams will consist of multiple choices, fill in the blank, and matching questions, short essay
questions and, solving some few mathematical problems related to industrial hygiene and toxicology.
Students will not be permitted to make-up any exam unless prior approval has been sought from the
instructor. A permit will only be granted based on compelling reasons such as an unforeseen
emergencies e.g. death of a close relative. Exam make-up will not be allowed if a student merely
decided to miss the original exam. If permission is granted to make up an exam, that exam must be
taken before the next scheduled class! No exceptions allowed.
There will be a short research project or herein after referred to as a term paper. The term paper requires
students to use the framework of IH i.e. anticipate, identify, evaluate and finally, recommend control
measures to prevent exposures to occupational hazards that would otherwise be detrimental to a worker's
health and safety. The term paper is expected to be based upon a hypothetical or real work environment
such as an industrial facility of a students choice. The term paper or project should be a work in
progress i.e. assignment to build upon one another and on the lectures and class exercises and not
expected to merely be a last minute rush!. Students should use the theory learned and apply it to a
particular research project or work situations.
The term papers are due on Thursday 11/18/2010 at 6:00 pm. Papers submitted after this date will
receive only a partial credit based on a policy of 5 pts to be subtracted from the overall grade per day
of delaying the term-paper or project report. There is no exception because the deadline only means

the last day to submit the term papers. Students should therefore note that the deadline or due date and
time indicated on this syllabus is the last date and time for receiving the reports/term papers. Students
may submit these reports/term papers anytime before this deadline. However and for convenience of
handling the term papers collectively, my preference is on the date and time shown on this syllabus.
Students are required to submit the following documents: (1) One original term paper as a hard copy (6-
10 pages) and appendices; (2) 5-6 power points slides (3) A soft copy (electronic version) of all the
above (1&2). The grading of the term papers will be based upon organization, quality, content in the
context of the course objectives, the number and quality of the references cited, grammar, punctuation
and spelling (students should therefore spell check their work before submission; and the required
submissions. Guidelines to help students with their term papers and the grading rubric will be posted on
the blackboard. A tentative date for student presentations to colleagues will be 12/02 (6 pm). As part of
the grading process and for a full credit, students are expected to be formal, respect others; raise
questions and attend the entire session. (Please, consult the grading rubric posted on the blackboard).
Class Exercises or Group Work: There will be in-class exercises throughout the semester. These
exercises are ad hoc or impromptu. Students cannot make up a missed class exercise, pop-up quizzes or
any other in-class assignment. The instructor reserves the right to give class exercise at any time of the
semester and during any time of the class. Most likely these exercises will not exceed 8. Note: the basis
for assigning the course grades to determine the overall grade also includes the impromptu quizzes,
assignments and the in-class exercises.
Homework Assignments/Pop-up quizzes; Class Exercises: Homework tasks are assigned in order to
help students better understand the chapter that was reviewed during the previous week. Please take
these homework assignments seriously. See the weight of the homework assignments below. Note that
students cannot make class exercises or a pop-up quizzes that are or were missed.
Validation of Syllabus: It is the students responsibility to read and understand the content of this

integrity in the relations among its members. To the extent that this standard is not
maintained, the good of the community suffers, and injustice (sometimes serious
injustice) may be done. One of the most important aspects of academic integrity
concerns the just measure of each students academic accomplishments. These are
ordinarily evaluated through written examinations or submitted work. For such
modes of assessment to operate fairly, it is essential that the instructor be assured
that the work used to evaluate the students performance is genuinely the students

student and similar behavior that defeats the intent of an examination or other class
