 Introduction of topic:

Four major methods are used for solving location problems: the factor-rating method,
location break-even analysis, the center-of-gravity method, and the transportation model.
The factor-rating method is popular because a wide variety of qualitative and quantitative
factors are considered while choosing a location.

Here we apply factor-rating method on the selection of best hostel which is based on
following factors.

 FREE LAUNDRY

 FURNISHED ROOM

 GOOD MENU OF MEAL

 FREE INTERNET FACILITY

 SMALL DISTANCE FROM UNIVERSITY

 Purpose of Study:
The purpose of this study is to see how we can apply operations management concepts in
real world.
 Hostels Details:

We selected three hostels near the COMSATS Institute of information technology,

Islamabad. These are:

♦ Pak Hostel
♦ Capital hostel
♦ Al Faiz Boys Hostel

Pak hostel is 1500 meters away from the university and they charged Rs.4500 per
student for accommodation and meal. You can avail other facilities like internet, laundry
on prescribed charges. Minimum three students accommodated in one room. You have to
provide them your permanent address, one copy of CNIC and one copy of your university
card.

Capital hostel is 3000 meter away from the university and they charged Rs.4750 per
student accommodation and meal. You can avail other facilities like internet, laundry on
prescribed charges. Minimum three students accommodated in one room. You have to
provide them your permanent address, one copy of CNIC and one copy of your university
card.

Al Faiz Boys Hostel is 1500 meters away from the university and they charged Rs.4500
per student accommodation and meal. You can avail other facilities like internet, laundry
on prescribed charges. Minimum three students accommodated in one room. You have to
provide them your permanent address, one copy of CNIC and one copy of your university
card.
 Methodology:

We have followed following steps while making the analysis sheet:

Step1: Development of relevant factors:

 FREE LAUNDRY
 FURNISHED ROOM
 GOOD MENU OF MEAL
 FREE INTERNET FACILITY
 SMALL DISTANCE FROM UNIVERSITY

Step 2: Calculation of weights:

 By putting weights according to preference of students

Step 3: Calculation of Scores:

 By assigning 1 for yes and 0 for no then calculated score of each factors

Step 4: Calculations of Weighted average of each factor:

 By multiplying weights with each factors

Step 5: Calculation of total weighted average score:

 By adding all factors weighted average score

Step 6: Selection of Best Hostel:

 By looking at highest score

 Explanation of Analysis Sheet:

In Pak Hostel, out of 21 students; 18 are satisfied with their room so by multiplying the
score with its weight which is .20 we got 3.6 as weighted average. For second factor, the
11 students have free laundry facility, by multiplying its weight which is .20 we got 2.2
as weighted average. Similarly we calculated the weighted average for internet facility,
small distance from university, good menu of meal which are .1, 6.3 and .6 respectively.
By adding the weighted average of each factor we got 12.8 as a total weighted average
score.

In Al-Faiz Hostel, By adding the weighted average of each factor we got 13.1 as a total
weighted average score.

In Capital Hostel, By adding the weighted average of each factor we got 11.9 as a total
weighted average score.

 Conclusion:

On the basis of total weighted average score the Al-Faiz Boys hostel at top with 13.1. So,
we can say that the Al-Faiz hostel is best among three hostels.

 Limitations:

The whole study is based on small sample size of 63; we only visited 3 hostels in the area
of chak shazad and divided our questionnaire in three equal parts of 21 for each hostel.
