Type of Test Possible Display(s) Explanation/Comments
X-ray Intensity Test The x-ray intensity test is the primary test
for plating detection; it is based on the
mathematical iterations of element-specific
x-ray energy intensities.
This test works regardless of the gold
concentration of the plated surface layer.
If this test fails ( Gold Plate Probable) the
certainty that the item is plated is high.

This display indicates that gold plating was

not detected.

High Nickel (Ni) Content Nickel (Ni) is often found as a boundary layer
between the substrate and the gold-plated
surface.

Low Karat Value The analyzer looks for karat values that are
significantly below 9 karats (37.5 weight %),
displaying a result of 8.5 karats or lower.

Non-Standard Karat This test looks for gold concentrations

Value that are not considered plumb based
on industry standard karat values, e.g., 9k
(37.5%), 10k (41.6%), 14k (58.3%), 18k (75%),
and 22k (91.6%).
