The struggle for Sugar Loaf lasted 10 days; it was fought under the worst possible conditions = a driving rain hat never seemed to slacken, day of night. Newsweek called Sugar Loaf "the most critical local battle of the war." Time described a company of Marinas - 270 men - assaulting the hill. They failed; fewer than 30 retumed. Fletcher Pratt, the military historian, wrote that the battle was unmatched in the Pacific war for "closeness and desperation." Casualties were almost unbelievable. In the 22nd and 29th Marine regiments, two out of avery three men fell. The struggle for the dominance of Sugar Loaf was probably the costliest engagement in the history of the Marine Corps. But by early evening on May 18, a5 night thickened over the embattled armies, the 28th Marines had faken Sugar Loaf, this time for keeps. When Sugar Loaf was finally secured on May 18, it had cost 2.600 Marine and about 2,500 Japanese dead SUGAR LOAF HILL (Part 9) The Killing Ground on Okinawa, Japan (1945) (Printed with permission from the author, who wishes to remain anonymous) | had no dea how jong | was out. MARCH 2017 BARRY The Saint dernard is a dog that was specifically bred for a single purpose —to search and rescue. Monks at the Saint Bernard Pass, a dangerous, snowy divide between Switzerland, and Italy, bred them for hundreds of years—perhaps even as far back as 1695—fo rescue travelers wha got lost and buried in the snow. They traveled in pairs so that when they found a victim, one dog could dig them out and sit on them for warmth while the other headed back to the monastery for help. Which brings us Barry, who saved 40 people's lives over the course of 12 years in the early 1800s. arry’s most famous rescue was ‘of a small child who'd become lost and trapped on a treacherous ice shelf. Barry managed to reach the boy, revive him, and keep him warm until rescue arrived. Gut even then, nobody could get to them. So Barry allowed the child to climb onto his back and pulled him to safety, inch by inch. Barry was so effective as a rescue dog that after his departure there was always one dog at the monastery named Batry—a tradition that persists to this day. = SURPRISING FOODS THAT CAN POISON PETS a Info from AARP Chocolate, caffeine and coffee Chocolate may have health benefits for humans, but net so for animals. The story of Ga-ron-ya-ge-go-wah's friendship vith & British general named Loft has been handed down in his family for generations, Ga-ran-ya-ge-go-wah, which means “the great blue sky,” was Chie Lofts greal-great-grandfather. He exchanged names with the British general when the latter's, commission expired and he left for Engtand after four years of service in the colonies. The story, which has become a part of Mohawk folklore, is that the iniendship began shortly after Gen, Loft's arrival when the Indian scout agreed 10 Serve as his guide through the wildemess which became the central portion of New York State, During an attack by the enemy, the general (seriously wounded) was defended and his ife saved by his faithful Indian companion, Chief Loft recounted that afier the battle, Gen. Loft was cared for by his scout and nursed back to health, The twa became fast friends and when parting exchanged their names as. a token of affection. The general accepted "Ge-ron-ya-ge-go-wah” as his middle name, and the Mohawk scout attached the name “Loft” o his Indian appellation Chief Latt was an indian attorney for his tribe, His job included setting quit claims, executing deads and wills, and settling desputes. Noted for his leather-bumning craft, he exhibited some of his work at the Pan-American Exposition in 1801 and later did jeatherwork for Queen Victoria, King George V, and the Duke of Windsor, In his youth he traveled throughout the country and Canada with a medicine show. On several occasions, Chiaf Loft was a delegate fram the Six Nations Reservation to the Canadian goverment in Ottawa to assist in settling Incian affairs. Well versed in Indian folkdore and master of five different indian . Chief Loft assisted in the preparation of numerous manuscripts on Indian la in conjunction with representatives of universities in this country and in Europe. MARCH 2007 ABST NATION Indigenous People ofthe land who never became citizens ‘Sex and Gender on the Middle Ground Once middie ground was established between the various Indian and white societies of the 1700's, the women and men at these junctures had fo come to terms with comanon ‘sexual desires and cultural differences as to the best ways to fulfil such desires, and the appropriate ways of acting for both men and women. Whites, especially, assumed that ‘certain physical acts were natural and the same all over the world. They were shocked and fascinated when this did not prove to be the case, So what the Europeans took to be ‘natural suddenly appeared as mere custom that varied from people to people, Europeans recognized there were differences, and judged them, To 18" century European eyes, work done by Indian women combined with the senual freedom they enjoyed marked them as inferior, along with their societies, Europeans, seeing their own boundaries on sexual activity disregarded, tanded to miss the boundaries the Indian people created. This was definitely not a world lacking in Sexual violence or double standards, Adulterous men might Jose property to an aggrieved husband, but adulterous woren might be mutated, killed, or gang-raped, an activity recognized as punishment. Guimond, SFC Ret. My retum from Vietnam was November 1970. Iwas stationed in Cu Chi, 25" Infantry Division. The next duty station for me was Fort Riley, Kansas. Within Fort Riley was my next duty assignment, This parficular assignment would be a most memorabla and rewarding experience for me, It was mainly civilian personnel = very few miliary The unit was called Correctonal Training Faclity (CTF), was an enclosed stockade specifically designed for holding military prisoners Every Monday, CTF would receive approximately 40 or so military prisoners for in-processing. These prisoners were from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, which is a prison for military personnel. These prisoners had been found guilty of vratious crimes, court-martialed, and sentenced to Fort Leavenworth to serve oul thair sentence. These 40 or so prisoners were salacted for possible rehabilitation and felumed to active duty. This was theit “second chance.” My assignment as Personnel Staff Non-Commissioned Officer {PSNCO) was to provide leadership assistan personnel that conducted in-processing of military prisoners and mainienance of the prisoners’ military records. Current and accurate information en each prisoner was vital. All in-processing was conducted within the confines of the stockade. Each Monday, one military, six civilians and | were escorted by prison guards to the in-processing area. The six civilians were one male and five female. These “second chance" prisoners were required fo undergo eight weeks training of military policies and procedures, During the Bight-week training period, prisoners were evaluated for possible retum to active duly, Asa PSNCO, my other assignments included counseling and evaluation of these “second chance” prisoners. Each Thursday aftamoon, this PSNCO conducted a Personnel Management class on reclassification and reassignment of these sokfers. This parlicular area was of the most interest to the soldiers, t was an area that dealt Girectly with their being assigned in an occupational area of their choice (whenever possible) and also being sent to. military post (wherever possible) that they wanted. ~ Continued on next page March 2017 Anthony Roma or 748-1171 DINING GUIDE TO AREA RESTAURANTS FRESH BAGELS 526 Hooper Road Endwell, NY 13760 —T The winner from the January Dining Guide drawing was: Brian Bokar of Owaga, NY. Ever wonder...what causes floaters, 4 or spots, in the eyes? The innermost part of the eye is a large cavity filled with a jeltylike fluid known as vitreous humor. Floaters are small flecks of protein pigment that suspend in the vitreous humor. ‘The small specks appear to be in front of the eye because the floaters are visible only when they fall within the line of sight, Most people might have specks trapped in the vitreous humor fram time to time but not notice them, Eyes have a way of adjusting to imperfections. Floaters are most likely to be noticed when one is looking at a plain background. An accasianal spot is usually harmless, although sometimes floaters can be precursors af retinal damage. The American Academy of Ophthalmology suggests: Ifa floater appears directly in your line of vision, the best thing to do is to move your eye araund, which will cause the inside fluid to swirl and allow the floater to move out of the way. Though we are more accustomed to moving aur eyes back and forth, lacking up and down will cause different currents within the eye and may be mare effective in getting the flaaters out of the way. Itis surprisingly difficult to isolate floaters in your line of vision, Because the floaters are actually within the eye, they move as our eyes move and seem to dart away whenever we try to focus on looking at them directly, HEAD LICE Adult lice are the size of a sesame seed, so head lice can be seen by the human eye, Thay live in human hair, draw blood from the skin, and lay eggs (called nits) on ‘the hair shaft. Live nits are found less than 1/2 inch from the scalp and most often on hair at the back of the head in the neck region. Some children with lice complain of itchiness but many have no symptoms. Head lice will spread as long as children play together. They spread almost completely through human hair to hair contact. Pets do not spread lice. Anyone can get head lice. Children in child care, preschools, elementary or middle schools are at risk. Head lice are NOT a sign of being dirty. They are not dangerous and do not spread disease. ™ More next month 30 TALC DANGER Talc is the softest mineral on earth, able to absorb odors and moisture. It's composed of magnesium, siicon, and oxygen and is: mined, usualy from deposits above ground, in more than a dozen countries. I's used in eye shadow and blush and chewing gum, ceramics, paint, paper, plastic, and nubber, From the early 1900s, 4 major U.S, company that sold baby powder tried to persuade women to use the powder on themselves, too, Ads in 1913 included the tag ine, “Best for Baby. Best for You.” By 1965, ads featured a sultry woman sprinkling talc on har bare shoulder. No baby is in sight. “Want to fee! cool, smooth and dry? Ils as easy as taking powder from a baby.” Two decades later, the company acknowledged that 70 percent of its baby powder was. used by adults. Forty-ive years ago, British researchers analyzed 13 ovarian tumors and found talc particles “deeply embedded” in 10. The study, published in 197', was the rst lo raise the possibilty that talcum powder could pose a risk. in 1982 a study by an epidemiologist at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston, showed the first statistical fink between genital talc use and avarian canoer. Baby Powder is considered a cosmetic, which doesn't need to be approved by the Food and Drug Adminis- tration under the 1938 Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The law is laid outin a 245-page document; only two pages are devoted to the safety of cosmetics, Meanwhile, mare than 1,000 wamen are suing large companies that market baby powder for covering up a cancer risk, claiming the companies have known of the association with ovarian cancer for years and failed to war them. 20 epidemiological studies have found that long-term perineal talc use increases the risk of ovarian cancer by about 33 percent. The odds of a woman in the U.S. falling ill with ovarian cancer are 1 in 70, Tale use is associated with worse odds, 1 in 53, according to those epidemiological studies. Qvarlan cancer is among the most deadly cancers, Some 20,000 women are diagnosed each year, often after the disease has spread, The symptoms are easily dismissed as. menstrual or abdominal discomfort. There's no reguiar screening for ovarian cancer, no known causes, only risk factors, and some research supgests the malignancy may begin outside the ovaries, at the end of the fallopian tubes. More than 14,000 women dle from he disease every year. I's been claimed thal Baby Power use could contribute to some 2,500 wamen being diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year and 1,500 dying. They are safe and suitable for long-term treatment. Very small quantities are all that are required. To prepare bugleweed, an infusion is made from one ounce of the dried herb to one pint of boiling water, taken in wineglassful doses, once or twice a day. You won't notice any effect for at keast a couple of weeks. Ittakes 34 weeks to kick in. At that point, symptoms of an over-active thyroid should subside, It has been confirmed in tests on humans that bugleweed extracts inhibit iodine metabolism and thyroxine release in the thyraid Motherwort is best prescribed as a tea made from the herb, 2 tsp. to.a ‘cup of boiling water, one cup ta be taken morning and night, It is used for relief of palpitation and tachycardia, symptoms frequently complained of by patients with hyperthyroidism ‘Tha idea of using plants to suppress thyreid hormones began with, ordinary white cabbage. Her diary covers the period af October 15th through November 11, 2075. 10/23/2018 (contd.) | walked down another narrow alley that widened up into a street with local vendors and vehicles on both sides, coming closer to the area called the French Concession, | came across a sewer's paradise...shop after shop seling buttons, zippers, lace and ribbon. | walked along the Pudong River and took pictures of the Asia House and other historical buildings south of the Bund, Walking back to the hotel, I came across a targe group of what | assumed to be children walking home from school For the weekend, we want to take a tour of one of the ancient water villages. We had sent a query to a guide listed on Tours by Locals, but have not reoaived a reply, The hotal also offers a tour, but at almost double the cost. | da not know what our plans are for the evening. Dinner at the lounge included fried noodles, curried lentils, vegatable samosas with mint chutney, and two types of cheese. We booked a private tour to the Zhouzhuang Water Village on ‘Sunday. After dinner, we took a quick walk up to the Starbucks on Nanjing Road to buy a mug for one of my sons-in-law, Robert, but they did not have the one | had seen earfier. We saw a cool sculpture in a park and the fagade of a tower and gate house, We look subway line 8 to the area where the 2010 Shanghai Expo took place. The most interesting and famous building was used as the China Exhibit — a six-story red building that looks like an upside-down Pyramid. The architecture and color of this building is very distinctive. It is now the location of the China Art Museum. We were amazed to discover that admission was free, We rode an elevator up to the top ficor and began walking theough the numerous galleries; it is the largest art museum in Asia. There ate ancient and contemporary paintings, a calligraphy display, and too many sculptures to count. There is a ramp between the 6° and 5* floor that offers a panoramic view of the city, There were signs everywhere saying no photography, but MARCH 2017 THE MocNLGHTER almost was taking pictures anyway, $0 | took a few as wall. Then suddenly he saw a car coming slowly toward him. It stopped, and Tom jumped in and closed the door. As the car began to move again, he discovered that there was nobody behind the wheel and the engine wasn't running. Terrified, the young man hunkered down into his seat, praying for his life. The car continued to move slowly, and as a bend appeared in the road and Tom was certain he would die, a hand out of nowhere came through the window and turned the wheel, then disappeared. Soon, Tom saw the lights of a pub appear ahead, and he jumped out of the car and ran to it. Qut of breath, he rushed inside and started telling everyone about the ghost car. Suddenly, the pub door opened and two men staggered in, panting and gasping for air. Looking around and seeing Tom, one said to the other, “Look, joe...there's that idiot that got in the car while we were pushing it!” TRE Lovee Two leprechauns visited the Mother Superior of a convent. ‘They asked her, "Do you have any nuns here who are of the little people?” "Midgets?
