Introduction to this second version of the guide
Henri Isaac
University Paris Dauphine
L
he success of the previous version of this guide led me to develop one second in
tegrating many other free or open source software who have been reported by many
Mac users and colleagues. In fact, the number of identified software increases
dramatically. We reach therefore the number of 75 applications, which is a great
repository for free, but still claims to be comprehensive! Indeed, free softwar
e or freeware, are very numerous. It is in this respect several additional sourc
es of information, such as the excellent site Framasoft (http://www.framasoft.ne
t/mot17.html), or now the consultation forum Macbidouille open following the pub
lication of this guide (http://forum.macbidouille.com/index.php?sho wtopic = 110
881 & hl = Free + applications) This version is no longer the result of a truly
collective work of the Francophone community that my Mac only census work. Thank
you to all those who have reported software (see § Acknowledgements). Why such
a guide he created? Because I am often asked by colleagues from the university
for advice, an explanation on using their Mac on the existence of software to me
et their needs. Many colleagues who think that supply is low in our software pla
tform and inadequate for serious work at the University with the Mac OS X. Many
people, despite the web, do not know where to find the software that search. Few
people know that our platform is a Unix-based FreeBSD, and as such, many applic
ations developed for Unix or Linux are ported to Mac OS X or are available throu
gh the X11 environment Mac OS X We access more easily and quickly to application
s from the open source movement, as evidenced by the Ports to Open Office and Gi
mp. In addition, the community of developers on Mac OS X produces numerous free
applications (freeware) and shareware (donationware, shareware) of very high qua
lity. In this regard, the arrival of the X system has contributed to the renewal
of an offer always more abundant in this type of software. For proof just visit
the site or http://www.versiontracker.com Apple http://www.apple.com/fr/downloa
ds/macosx.)
But what often repels our colleagues is the belief - unfounded - the high cost o
f our platform. Not only do our machines are very robust (the machines last a lo
ng time), the system is very reliable, and therefore a total cost of ownership w
ell below that of a PC, but there is also a large range of quality software for
free the teacher-researcher. It must first remember that every machine comes wit
h a set of good quality software (iCal, Mail, iSync, Address Book, iTunes, etc..
). If one were to buy all these tools, the cost of the machine would be much hig
her. These tools enable most of the time to meet virtually all needs of many use
rs. There are also free of gems that you sometimes find after a long voyage on t
he Internet. These are software that are the subject of this guide. Some of them
are already known, others are clearly dedicated to the social scientist. It sho
uld also mention all the applications pay for teachers and researchers (MathType
, EndNote, RefViz, SPSS,€Stata, Mathematica, etc..) To prove that our platform
has a relatively comprehensive software library for enseignantchercheur. This ma
y come in future. The guide consists of a set of sheets outlining applications.
These files specify the main functions of the application, the system required,
the application language, and the URL from which it is available. Finally, the g
uide presents some applications that came with the system, many are very success
ful. Last, this guide was written before the arrival of Tiger (OS X.4). Since th
en, several applications listed in this guide are placed in versions offering al
l the necessary compatibility with this new system.

Several members of the Mac community have insisted that the guide explains the d
ifference between a free (freeware) and a software "free" (GNU / GPL). It is cle
ar that this difference should be clarified. Many players in the computing world
maintain a confusion between these two categories of software whose spirit and
licensing differ sharply. GNU / GPL does not say absolutely not free. Some free
software is paying off. For example, the version of operating system Linux Red H
at is available for free but also several paid versions (Red Hat Enterprise Linu
x ES is selling $ 349 in basic version).
â ¢ â ¢
transparency: the license involves providing the software with source code, it i
s public it is not possible to include hidden features to the detriment of users
sustainability: a document created in Mac with a free format will be readable o
n Windows or Linux, the format is more related software.
One can also cite a third pseudo-class, software donationware, whose author is s
imply your appreciation for him to make a donation. The type of license is not r
eally defined, but it is often free.
Free = free?
By Tom Pollak
I
t must therefore explain some differences between these programs. Software is pr
imarily a source code written and developed by developers. A code is associated
with a license which governs the rights of designers and establishing the modali
ties of its use. The software presented in this guide are common to all free peo
ple, but they do not all have the same licenses. It is possible to classify them
into two main categories: Proprietary software is probably the most common, mos
t software vendors are and remain in all cases the owners of their software. The
licenses are restrictive in this case, they set a number of limitations to prot
ect the economic interests of the editor (for example, they may prohibit copying
the software or install it on more than one computer ...) . Some of these progr
ams are free, they are designated in this guide by the licensing freeware, but m
ostly they are sold commercially (shareware). Free software is generally the res
ult of a collaborative effort of a community of developers, these software are b
eing associated more permissive licenses, without which, moreover, their develop
ment would be impossible. The most common of these licenses is the GPL (General
Public License) 1, which allows to sum up, run, copy, distribute and modify the
software. Their main goal is to be accessible to all, which explains in particul
ar that they are often free, and that's why many are available for multiple plat
forms, including Mac OS X as evidenced in this guide. The interests of free soft
ware are many. Examples are: â ¢ Economic independence: it is not related to the p
ublisher for updates, compatibility, bugs ... ;
Install some software from the Unix / Linux Mac OS X using Fink
L
e Unix system does not start a GUI equivalent to that of Mac OS X. The instructi
ons are directly executed through a shell. MacOS X has its own shell, the Termin
al application. Its use requires to master Unix commands, which brings us back,
from the perspective of the user, before the Macintosh.€The specificity of the
Mac has always been in use graphical user interface that does not facilitate the
installation and use of software from the Unix / Linux for a Mac user accustome
d to the simplicity of the GUI. Moreover, the Unix software are often distribute
d as components (packages). Some software requires the prior installation of som
e libraries, or components. The matter is further complicated in that, some soft
ware is available as uncompiled. In short, the Mac user is a bit lost! To remedy
this confusing situation, many people have developed the software Fink and Fink
Commander (GUI for Fink) to facilitate, where possible, the task to the Mac use
r bit inured to this kind of manipulation. Fink Commander list all binary packag
es available for download and installation can relatively easily. It is strongly
recommended to install Fink and Fink Commander to install some free software. E
ven if these applications facilitate the installation, the fact remains that the
se applications are not aimed at novices. It is strongly recommended to read the
documentation before embarking on the use of such tools.
