(De partm e nt of Anthropology, Unive rsity of Abe rde e n)

This pape r introduce s a study of walk ing as a m e ans of unde rstanding how
place s are constructe d through bodily m ove m e nt. It e ngage s with the
conce pts of m obility and locality in anthropology in a ve ry spe cific se nse :
not so m uch to follow the trave ls of a culture be twe e n pre -e x isting place s,
but in se e ing how the m obility of pe ople within particular e nvironm e nts
allows for the cre ation of m e aning. By walk ing, we argue , pe ople are able to
conne ct tim e s and place s through the grounde d e x pe rie nce of the ir
m ate rial e nvironm e nt. W e focus firstly on walk ing as an e le m e nt of
pe rsonal biography, a te m poral practice that is continually re -le arne d as the
physical body change s and ne w e nvironm e nts are e ncounte re d. Diffe re nce s
be twe e n le arning in infancy, adulthood and old age , and adjustm e nts in
re lation to tim e of day, se asonality and the com pany of the walk e r are
ope ne d for inve stigation. Se condly, we focus on how the role of the se nse s,
wayfinding and the m ate rial culture of walk ing are ce ntral to the
phe nom e nological unde rstanding of place and bodily e x pe rie nce . In
com m e nting on the se te m poral and spatial aspe cts of walk ing, we work
towards a the ory of hum an m ove m e nt as a social proce ss, e x plicable

Jon Ande rson > Are a (R oyal Ge ographical Socie ty) > Se pte m be r 2004, vol. 36, iss. 3

Abstract: This pape r e x plore s how unde rstandings of the k nowle dge and
live s of individuals can be gaine d through m ak ing ge ographical conte x t
m ore e x plicit within qualitative re se arch m e thods. The pape r will focus on
conve rsations in place . More particularly, it will sugge st that conve rsations
he ld whilst walk ing through a place have the pote ntial to ge ne rate a collage
of collaborative k nowle dge . Drawing on the work of C ase y, the pape r builds
upon the notion of the constitutive co-ingre die nce of place and hum an
ide ntity, and, through using docum e ntary and e m pirical e x am ple s, will
argue that talk ing whilst walk ing can harne ss place as an active trigge r to

Abstract:

Mobility and trave l have re ce ntly attracte d the inte re st of m any pe ople ,
