Applications of symmetry

an important application of symmetry in inorganic chemistry is to the construction

and labeling of molecular orbitals. however, there are several other applications of
the group classification of molecules. one application is to use the group to decide
whether a molecule is polar or chiral. in most cases we do not need to use the
sledgehammer of group theory to crack the nut of deciding whether a molecule has
these characteristics, but these examples give an impression of the approach that
can be adopted when the result is not obvious.

polar molecules.

a polar molecule is a molecule with a permanent electric dipole moment. there are
certain symmetry elements that rule out a permanent electric dipole in molucules,
or forbid it to lie in certain orientations. first, a molecule cannot be polar if it has a
center of inversion. inversion implies that a molecule has matching charge
distributions at all diametrically opposite points about center. this simmetry rules
out a dipole moment. second, and for the same reason, a dipole moment cannot lie
perpendicular to any mirror plane or axis of rotation that the molecule may possess.
for example, a mirror plane demands identical atoms on either side of the plane, so
there can be no dipole moment across the plane. similarly, a symmetry axis implies
the presence of identical atoms at points related by corresponding rotation, which
rules out a dipole moment perpendicular to the axis. in summary:

1. a molecule cannot be polar if it has a center of inversion.

2. a molecule cannot have an electric dipole moment perpendicular to any mirror

plane.

3. a molecule cannot have an electric dipole moment perpendicular to any axis of

rotation.

some molecules have a symmetry axis that rules out a dipole moment in one plane
and another symmetry axis or mirror plane that rules it out in another direction. the
two or more symmetry elements jointly forbid the presence of a dipole moments in
any direction. for example, any molecule thas has a Cn axis dan either a c2 axis
perpendicular to that cn axis, or a ah plane perpendicular to the axis, cannot have a
dipole moment in any direction. any molecules belonging to a D point group is of
this kind, so any such molecule must be nonpolar; a bf3 molecule (d3h) is therefore
nonpolar. likewise, molecules belonging to the tetrahedral, octahedral, and
icosahedral groups have several perpendicular rotation axes that rule out dipoles in
all three directions, so such molecules must be nonpolar; hence, SF6 (OH) and ccl4
(tD) are non polar.

a molecule cannot be polar if it belongs to any of the following point groups: (1) any
group that includes a center of inversion; (2) any of the groups D and their
derivatives; (3) the cubic groups (T,O), the icosahedral group (I) and their
modifications.

Aplikasi simetri

kehadiran momen dipol segala arah. misalnya, setiap molekul LTU memiliki Cn
kelompok D titik semacam ini, sehingga setiap molekul tersebut harus nonpolar;

kubik (T, O), kelompok ikosahedral (I) dan modifikasi mereka.
