Question No.1 carries L0 marks and remaining questions carry 15 marks each.

Use of Design Data handbook is permitted

1. (a) What is the function of transmission shaft?

(b) Two shaft A and B are made of the same material.
The diameter of the shaft A is twice as that of shaft B. The power
ransmitted by the shaft A will b: of shaft B.
.
(0 Twice
. (ii) Four times
(iiil Eight times
(iv) Sixteen times.
(c) What are the requirements of good' coupling?
(d) What do you mean by nipping in springs?
(e) Name d.ifferent materials used for springs'
(0 In 6215 bearing, what is the significance of 15?
(g) Define eccentricity in journal bearing.
(h) The size of gear is sPecifred bY
(i) If both gear and pinion are made of same material, then the power
transmitting capacity is decided by ------ .

2. A propeller shaft to transmit 50 kW power at 600 rpm: It is a
i.s required
hollorv shaft, having inside diameter 0.8 times of the outside diameter. It is
made of steel (Sy, = 380 N/mmz) and the factor of safety is 4. Ca1culate the
inside and outside diameters of the shaft. (Assume S"x = 6.5 trrr. (15)

3. (a) Discuss the function of a coupling. Give atleast three practical

applications. (5)

(b) Design a muff coupling to connect two shafts transmitting 40 kW at

120 rpm. The permissible shear and crushing stress for the shaft and key
material (mild steel) are 30 MPa and 80 MPa. The material of muff is
cast Iron with permissible shear stress of 15 MPa. Assume that the
maximum torque transmitte d is 25o/o greater than the mean torque.
(10)

4. A helical spring B is placed inside the coils of a second helical spring A, having
the same number of coils and free length. The springs are made of same
material. The composite spring is compressed by an axial load of 2300 N which
is shared between them. The mean diameters of spring A and B are 100 mm
and 70 mm respectively and wire diameters are 13 mm and 8 mm respectively.
Find the load taken and the maximum stress in each spring. (15)

5. (a) Write short note on classifications and different types of anti-friction

bearings. (5)

(b) A journal bearing is to be designed for a centrifugal pump for the'

following data :

Load on the journal

= 12 kN, Diameter of Journal = 75 mm speed =
t44O rpffi, Atmospheric temperature of oil = 16'C. Operating
temperature of the oil = 60"C, absoiute viscosity of the oil at
60 0c = 0.023 kg/m-s.. Give a systematic design of the bearing. (10)

6. A pair of helical gears are to transmit 15 kW. The teeth are 20o stub in
diametral plane and have a helix angle of 45". The pinion runs at 10,000 rpm
and has 80 mm pitch diameter. The gear has 320 mm pitch diameter. if the
gears are made of cast steel having allowable static strength of 100 MPa.
Determine a suitable module and face width from static strength
considerations and check the gears for wear, given o., = 618 MPa' (15)

7. (a) Discuss about the various types of stresses induced in a connecting rod.
(5)

(b) What are the points to be considered while designing a piston for an
IC engine? (5)

(c) Explain various types of stresses induced in a crank web. (5)
